I wonder if his hoof was bothering him more than his trainers let on.

Not sure what is more obnoxious...the hype of the Triple Crown threat heading into the Belmont, what seems like every year OR all the talk of Big Brown's injury that we'll be hearing for weeks?

YUP! That should have been long gone but PETA loves to drag on any story that might get their name in the paper as long as they can.

Obviously the hoof was bothering him, he came in last fading fast on the home stretch. He was perfectly positioned in the back turn.
They didnt say anything about the nature of the injury except that the trainers were going to have to let him cool down. He was too hyped on adrenaline for them to tell anything yet.
From the way it sounds it gives hope its not life threatening.
Kind of reminds me of the old movie Caseys Shadow except the Shadow won its big race.
I thought this was in the bag. Big Brown could run and seemed very strong at the end of both previous legs.

nah hardly a comparrison. First its not the final race of the season. Second the triple crown is a once in a lifetime thiong, the Patriots can and will make another run at history in 2008. Third, the Patriots didnt finish dead last!

It is the final of the triple crown. And yes, the Patriots finished dead last in that particular contest.

2nd out of the two teams is dead last in the Super Bowl. :p

From what the jockey said after the race, he gets a xthumbsupx in my book. Good call when you are riding 50 million bucks, you don't want to be the one that throws it down the drain.

While it sucks that Big Brown didn't pull it off, I was glad to hear that he wasn't lame after the race. After what happened to Eight Belles, I was really waiting for the same thing to happen to BB. Those horses are driven to their the breaking point where they might win it all or lose their life in the process. The jockey did the right thing, not for the money but for the horse.

Secretariat was a damn freak of nature. His autopsy revealed that his heart weighed 22 pounds (the average throroughbred's weighs 9 lbs) and was in proportion, not mutated or abnormally formed. Just amazing.

Just to set the record straight, as a rule, most championship thoroughbreds have much larger than normal hearts. Definitely not Secretariat sized hearts, but much larger than the 9lb average.
There have been a limited few with hearts very close to Secretariat size who had nowhere near the success he had. Secretariat was the complete package as far as championship thoroughbreds go. He was indeed a freak of nature, but he also had the attitude and the intelligence. On top of that, even most of the "experts" will say that Secretariat was the most intelligent race horse they have ever came in contact with.
