There's a Whipple returning to the University of Massachusetts football program.
Spencer Whipple, the quarterback son of former UMass coach Mark Whipple, is transferring from the University of Pittsburgh after one season.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound quarterback has not officially been accepted at the school, so UMass officials could not comment on him, but several sources confirmed the transfer. Father and son returned to the area last weekend for a visit.
Mark Whipple, an offensive assistant coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, coached the Minutemen from 1998-2003, leading UMass to a national championship his first season and coaching the team to the postseason in 1999 and 2003 before leaving to become the quarterbacks coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
