I thought he just got back from his rehab starts in the minors and was going to be a closer?

He did, but he blew a save two nights ago and woke up with soreness.

Not a big braves fan, but I always like him. Hope Chipper can go for it all this year also!

Was Smoltz last start a couple months against the Nat's when he was pulled in the first or second inning? If so, I was there...I saw his last game :o xbowx

I am a big Braves fan, but Smoltz was one of the guys you would actively root for even if he went somewhere else, kind of like Glavine and Maddux.

Actually, you probably saw his last start. He pitched Monday but blew the save.

I think you may have been thinking of Tom Glavine, who pitched 0.0 innings in a game at Washington earlier in the year. Smoltz had two good starts there, and his last start was April 27 when he went 4 innings at the Mets.

Damn, I think you're right! xthumbsupx
I hope he's not retiring also! I've never been a Braves fan, but I've always appreciated Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux.

if Glavine and Maddux hang em up at seasons end that will be one impressive induction ceremony in 5 years...

And what if Mariano retires after this season also....would voters allow 3 pitchers on the first ballot??? Would they want a closer (no matter how good he's been) voted in the same year as two of the greatest starting pitchers over the past couple decades?? xconfusedx

If Mariano retired this year and the three of them did also.... I think Mariano could find himself not getting ion on the first ballot.
There certainly would be a large group of voters who would find it fitting for those three Braves pitchers to all be inducted together.
That said, I dont see Rivera hanging them uo this year.

Agreed, on all fronts. xnodx Rivera is back to his old form (because he only needs to pitch in every few games considering the Yanks aren't even winning half their games). So the only way I see Rivera retiring this year is as a result of a serious injury.

I think it would be fitting for the Braves big three to go in together. I hope they all retire this year for that very reason.
I remember (with Smoltz and Glavine) the 91 team, and knowing right then that those two young pitchers were going to have amazing careers. Game 7 in '91 Smoltz vs. Morris... epic duel, and Smoltz pitching against the guy he idolized growing up... what a game.

He's not saying he's retiring. He says he's gonna try and come back but nothing is for sure.
