Dartmouth football moved into the new Floren Varsity House behind the east grandstand in the final month of the 2007 season. Floren features a 10,000-square-foot varsity strength-training center, a "smart" classroom with 130 tiered seats, meeting rooms, a study lounge, a football locker room, equipment and training rooms and offices for football, baseball, women's lacrosse and softball.

When a new baseball park and field hockey field are opened next year, it will culminate a flurry of athletic building at Dartmouth. According to Athletic Director Josie Harper, improvements represent a commitment to athletics of “close to” $100 million in the last decade alone.

Dartmouth’s facilities improvements over the past decade include constructing Scully-Fahey Field (lacrosse), Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion, Burham Soccer Field, Blackman Football Practice Fields, the McLane Family Skiway Lodge, a new track encircling the new FieldTurf football field, Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse and Floren Varsity House. Significant renovations have been made to Berry Sports Center, Hanover Country Club, Alumni Gym, Karl Michael Pool and Leverone Field House. Work has begun on the new Red Rolfe Field (baseball), and an AstroTurf field for field hockey. A new home grandstand and press box will be constructed for football’s Memorial Field after the 2008 season.

Head Football Coach
Eugene F. (Buddy) Teevens III, who as a player led Dartmouth to the 1978 Ivy League championship and as a coach led Dartmouth football to back-to-back Ivy League titles in 1990 and 1991, returned as the head coach of the Big Green football program in 2005.

Teevens, 50, coached Dartmouth from 1987 through 1991. During his final two seasons, the Big Green posted identical overall records of 7-2-1. With a 6-1 record, Dartmouth shared the 1990 Ivy title with Cornell. In 1991, Dartmouth won the outright championship with a 6-0-1 mark.

In addition to restoring Dartmouth’s rich football tradition, Teevens has been an integral force in a series of major improvements to Dartmouth’s football facilities, including installation of a FieldTurf surface on Memorial Field for the 2006 season, and the new Floren Varsity House that includes training, dressing and meeting facilities. This new building, scheduled for use in 2007, is part of a project that includes the refurbishment of the east grandstand at Memorial Field.

Teevens succeeded John Lyons at the helm of the Big Green and is the 21st coach.

Dartmouth’s home games are played at Memorial Field. Cornell was the opponent and a crowd of 14,000 attended when Memorial Field was dedicated on November 3, 1923.

Memorial Field was dedicated in memory of the 112 Dartmouth men who died in World War I. The names of Dartmouth’s 112 war dead are inscribed on a granite tablet inside the main entrance to the stadium.

The largest football crowd at Memorial Field, 21,530, watched the Harvard-Dartmouth game in 1974.

Why Big Green?

The use of the color green ( hence, the nickname “The Big Green”) dates back to the 1860s. In the "Dartmouth Bi-Monthly" of April, 1908, Professor E.J. Bartlett explains how green came to be Dartmouth’s color. Bartlett’s bottom line: it was the only color not used by another college.

Bartlett’s story describes an 1866 rowing race involving Dartmouth and a number of other Eastern colleges, at which Dartmouth was one of a few, if not the only, school without a color to identify it. Harvard had chosen crimson, Yale blue, Hamilton orange, Williams purple, Amherst yellow, and Brown—not surprisingly—brown.

At a meeting the following September, Dartmouth students gathered and discussed the need for a school color; green was settled on because, as Frederick G. Mather 1867 said, “Indeed, it was the only decent color that had not been taken already.”
