I haven't seen a 1A play away at a 1AA team in many moons. Back in the day, Temple, Navy and Delaware used to play home/home series. The last time Navy played at Delaware was 1989 when Delaware won 10-9. Temple last played at Delaware sometime in the early 80's.

When is the last time a 1A played at your house and who were they?

Toledo played a home and home with McNeese in the early 80's. BUT I think we were still I-A when we opened up the home and home with them in Toledo, then we moved to I-AA between our away game and their return to Lake Charles.

We beat them pretty bad from what I remember.

Also, Louisiana Lafayette played their last game in Cowboy Stadium in 1986. 4 years after McNeese and the SLC tossed ULL for not limiting their scholarships to remain I-A.

Did we ever let Idaho play as the home team when they played in WA Griz? I thought it had something to do with helping out attendance averages. Maybe I am confusing it with WA States stadium.

That was my "Team that left me high and dry" from your post. We beat Heisman candidate Nappoleon McCallum led Navy and Temple who I believe had Paul Palmer who also played in the NFL that year. Yet we end up 7-4 and miss the playoffs. (still hurts to this day)

WSU let them use games against the Cougs at Martin Stadium as home games a few times.

If you are meaning to say that Marshall was IA in '95 and '96 you are incorrect. The Herd made the jump after the '96 season. P10jim is scratchin' his head why you don't know that one.

I have no idea...Had to have been decades ago before such classifications existed...Possibly Rutgers in the 1950's or 60's.

Might be Eastern Michigan 1970, 14-14 score.
Last win at home against a current FBS school, N Illinois 1969, 28-0.

According to what I see on the College Football Data Warehouse: Perhaps a 35-0 loss to Rutgers in '74? The last win at home may have been over Rutgers in '71. Of course I believe the classifications were much different then...

I think for New Hampshire either 1973 or 1979 depending on when Dartmouth reclassified.

You made me go back to a media guide because I knew there was a season during the 80's when UNH ruined a Holy Cross undefeated season in November when Crusader Nation was geared up for going into the BC game undefeated. My research determined it was 1984 when UNH beat HC 14-13 at Fitton on November 10th. UNH was 9-2 that season with a one point loss to Boston University and a four point loss to UMass.

Also Boston College in 1982. We played them every year before that switching back and forth between Amherst and Boston.

For W&M it was Temple in 1984, unless Holy Cross was still I-A when they visited in 1986. After the Tribe reclassified in 1980, we hosted Wake Forest, Miami (Ohio), East Carolina, and Rutgers before the Temple game.

Nope. HC was reclassified prior to the beginning of the 1982 season due to stadium size and attendance criteria mandated by teh NCAA to remain at the I-A level.

Was at that last HC vs. BC game in 1986. The field was a mess due to a heavy snow early the week before followed by warmer temps and lots of melting - possibly rain too. The day of the game was clear and cool, but not cool enough to freeze the field.

HC scored 2 first quarter TD's to go up 14 - 0 early. Had a younger brother living in Baltimore at the time who said whatever game he was watching had a cut away to Jim Lampley who reported a "major college upset brewing." All down hill after that second TD to the final score!

If it was prior to the 1982 season for Holy Cross, then I assume it was for Dartmouth as well. in 1979 Holy Cross visited Durham on Sept. 15th and Dartmouth visited on Sept. 29th. So, I have to mention Holy Cross as a last possible FBS team to visit Cowell Stadium. Probably still Dartmouth though.

Wow, my bad, you're correct. And I don't think it is an example of me forgetting the details two decades plus later because we sure treated the game like you were undefeated. And I sure recall celebrating at Fitton Field that day like we knocked off an undefeated team late in November.

Maybe it was because many folks at HC hadn't come to grips with the reclassification. I do recall many Crusaders being unhappy now that they were playing Yankee Conference schools rather than the major Eastern schedule they once played. There was a definite lack of respect in Worcester for the Wildcats which made that victory very, very enjoyable.

YSU home IA games since 1990:

1997 Buffalo
1995 Central Michigan
1994 Akron & Kent State
1993 Western Michigan
1990 Ohio & Akron

For some reason everyone here thinks their squads are better than the MAC, so this may not mean much to anyone. However, there were not many I-AA vs IA games at this time, and YSU was 6-1 over this stretch, the loss was to CMU.

I might also point out that YSU played at least 2 IA teams in the following seasons, and played 3 in '87, 89, '94 & '95. They played 4 IA contests in 1988. Of course all of this changed with the team joining the Gateway in 1997.

1990=2, 1992=2, 1993=2, 1994 = 3, 1995 = 3, 1996=2, 1997=2, 1998=2, 1989 = 3, 1988 = 4, 1987 = 3, 1985=2, 1984=2.

Prior to this YSU was D-II

The last McNeese game at home against a I-A was Louisiana Tech in, I believe, 1990. The famous fight game with Willie Roaf swinging his helmet. Tech beat the hell out of McNeese that night.

I think a couple of years prior, 88 I believe, McNeese played Toledo at home in a game with another memorable moment: Toledo players, dog tired from playing a half on an early September south Louisiana night, dying as they climb the embankment in the north endzone to try to get back to the (air-conditioned) locker room...some look as though they won't make it and if they do, it's doubtful if they'll want to come back out... McNeese goes on to win, I think it was 46-19.

Crusader Bob or any other Holy Cross fan I'm just curious. Holy Cross has an interesting history to me. They were a great 1AA team thru the 80's ranked in the top 5 almost every year. Gordie Lockbaum placed 3rd in the 1988 Heisman. Just a great 1AA football program with lots of press back in the day. Even with their great football tradition, Holy Cross decided not to participate in the playoffs. However I see that they did particiapate in the playoffs in 1983?

Why did they decide not to participate in the playoffs back then? And why did they decide to eliminate scholarships and downgrade their football program in the early 90's?

In 1983 Holy Cross was still a I-AA Independent. Starting in the 1986 season HC joined the Colonial (shortly there after re-named Patriot) League. The league was to be closely affiliated with the Ivy league and founded on similar principles primarily that student athletes be representative of the student body and only receive financial aid. HC was permitted by the PL to continue to offer scholarships through the senior class of 1991 i.e., freshmen entering in the Fall of 1987, which is one of the reasons HC dominated the early years of the PL.

One other Ivy rule, the PL adopted was the prohibition on post-season play, so all of those great HC teams from 1986 - 1991 by PL rule could not participate in the I-AA playoffs.

The PL changed the rule in 1995 to allow the PL champion (and any other teams invited) to participate in the NCAA Championship. By that time, however, HC was in the middle of a 10 year process of trying to figure out how to be competitve without scholarships.

Hopefully after a 25 year absence we return to FCS playoffs this year!

Since it seems that we're adding extra rules to the equation now, I submit that Wake Forest circa 2000 "barely counts" either.

Just a shame to see a once proud program go from a perenial power to a doormat. I'm sure there were a lot of Holy Cross folks upset when they decided to take away scholarships and join the Colonial/Patriot League.
