Auto bid qualifers???

"The Division I playoff committee adopted changes in the selection process that will guarantee entry into the postseason for any conference champion that wins at least eight games against Division I opponents, wins two non-conference games against teams from auto-bid leagues and ranks 16th or higher in an average of the Sports Network top-25 poll, the coaches poll and the Gridiron Power index (GPI) computer ranking."

There are a lot of qualifers in there.

Criteria to make the playoffs:

1. Win 8 games against D1 teams

2. Win 2 OOC games against auto bid leagues

3. Top 16 in the polls

4. Top 16 in GPI

Either this is a poorly written article or it's going to be tough for an NEC or Big South program to meet these parameters. Most of these schools don't get one quality OOC win much less two. The NEC Champ last year was Albany (8-4 record) with 1 OOC win against Fordham (Patriot League).

Guess these guys are going to be calling the weaker CAA, SoCon, Gateway, etc. teams to try and get those 2 OOC wins.

Some of the past OVC, Patriot, even Big Sky and Southland champs haven't accomplished all of these in the past. ASU didn't get 2 OOC wins of that caliber in 2005.

Am I reading this wrong?

The parameters are only for 2008 and 2009. After that the Big South and NEC champ get auto bids, right? If they make it in 08, or 09 they probably deserve the bid. They get auto bids for their "champion" starting in 2010. No way do those leagues deserve an auto bid. They will be more first round fodder.

This was made for the Big South and NEC champions, nothing more, nothing less. Sure, you could throw in the Pioneer League, but this was really for the Big South and NEC. We've already beat this one to a bloody pulp -- old news, saint. Sure you can see us bicker about it elsewhere... ;)

Our schedule is set up perfectly for it this year.

We have our six conference games (if you count PC as a conference game). To win the league, you have to go undefeated. That's six wins.

We play four teams from auto-bid leagues: Western Carolina, Lafayette, Youngstown St, and Elon.

We should beat WCU and Lafayette.

That'll give us the eight DI wins and two wins over auto-bid leagues.

The problem comes in the Top 16 ranking. We will have to beat Elon or Youngstown to even sniff that Top 16 ranking. It's definitely possible. Won't be easy, but possible.

I don't think you're misreading it, but I'm pretty sure it only applies to the next 2 years. I doubt this clause will end up being used, though, given the schedule difficulties involved.

One of those teams could still make it in '08 or '09, though. They could still get selected just like any other at-large.

If someone makes the criteria they will make the playoffs. There will be no scheduling changes because the team that makes it will be counted as an at-large.


Albany has the schedule to make it out of the NEC:

OOC - UMass, UNH, Delaware, Hofstra.
We can beat Hofstra.
If we pick off either UNH or Delaware (both are doable IMO, tough, but doable) and play the other two games to the wire we could sniff a top 16 ranking (assuming we run through the NEC like last year).

That also assumes that people won't intentionally vote an NEC or Big South team down to avoid losing an at-large from their conference. This is my opinion is almost a lock to happen, especially in the coaches poll.xcoffeex That's why this criteria is a sham. But, the NEC commish said that she didn't want to rock the boat because she didn't want it to effect the main goal which was receiving the AQ in 2010.

If the committee's goal is to ensure gettnig the top 16 teams in the playoffs, then this measure, while imperfect, goes a long way toward accomplishing that goal. In 2007 that was definitely not the case...

I would agree with you....if....this was going to be applied accross the board. The problem is that its not. Its only be applied to the Big South and the NEC.

Coastal Carolina was #13 going into the playoffs in 2006, I believe. They finished the season #20.
