What exactly is a mid major? I have references to them in the fcs and fbs. Across all sports, so what exactly are the qualifications to be a mid major?

In FCS, it's the Pioneer Football League.
It used to be the NEC, before they got an AQ for the playoffs and the MAAC, before they disbanded.

If you're looking across all of Division I, mid major usually refers to those conferences that aren't one of the six Bowl Championship Series conferences: ACC, SEC, Big East, Big 10, Pac 10, Big 12. Most often you see this used for basketball.
For FCS football it's usually used for non-scholarship football. As TT has said, that's currently the Pioneer Football League.

Yeah, the PFL - complete non schollie/aid. No idea why the NEC was included last year. Sports Network is thankfully dropping it this year (they would have last year but they changed their FCS writer near the start of the season).
