Proof positive why I hate the All-Star game. Josh Hamilton should be a SHOE IN for starting OF, but he won't win the popularity contest. xsmhx xsmhx xsmhx

he's only 40,000 out of the 3rd spot after 1 update, so theres plenty of time... atleast hes on the ballot.... MLB decided to put Crisp on instead of Ellsbury -_-

Online voting has turned this in to a farce

Only two of those guys deserve to be in the lead. I don't believe in voting in May, nor do I believe in voting anyplace but an MLB ballpark (a minor-league park is acceptible, since gas is so expensive).

If I were the impatient, online-voting type, I'd go with these lineups. All these guys lead their league in Win Shares for their positions.

1B - Kevin Youklis - 11 win shares
2B - Ian Kinsler - 8 WS
3B - Chone Figgins - 7 WS (Melvin Mora has 6, and leads AL 3B's in fielding win shares, so he'd be a good choice, too)
SS - Derek Jeter - 6 WS (most batting WS among AL SS's)
C - Joe Mauer - 8 WS
OF - Carlos Quentin - 10 WS
OF - Josh Hamilton - 10 WS
OF - BJ Upton - 8 WS

(Jacoby Ellsbury would be a very good choice, too. He's got as many win shares as BJ Upton, and leads AL OF's in fielding win shares.)

DH - Milton Bradley - 7 WS

NL

1B - Lance Berkman - 15 WS (most in majors by a wide margin for late May)
2B - Dan Uggla - 11 WS
3B - Chipper Jones - 10 WS
SS - Miguel Tejada - 10 WS
C - Geovany Soto - 9 WS
OF - Pat Burrell - 9 WS
OF - Ryan Church - 9 WS
OF - Xavier Nady - 9 WS

Put Nate McLouth and his 10 WS at DH

Well, if he doesn't get voted in, he'll be the first name picked for the bench

As for the popularity contest, umm, Varitek? Really? He's hitting .275 and leads AL Catchers in Ks. Mauer or AJ Pierzynski should be catching. That's ballot-box stuffing xtwocentsx

Varitek is still the best defensive catcher in the league by far, and is way above any statistical comparison. You forgot one position, Dice was 8-0 entering tonight (got a ND).

Glad to see him turn things around. xthumbsupx The Tampa fans gave him much respect this weekend.

Pitchers aren't voted on, the starter (and all the others) will be selected by the manager, and there's plenty of time left for a few other pitchers to put up some good numbers too

Here's another great aside:

In case you didn't notice, Tampa Bay has the Best. Record. in. Baseball.

Yet, they have 1 player in the Top 5 of voting at any position in the AL

I like fan voting, I really do. And generally, they do a good job getting lots of positions right. But sometimes..... xchinscratchx

and who do u suggest should be higher?

Carlos Pena whos batting .231? Jason BArtlett batting .249? Upton is the only one whos playing well overall, perhaps a case can be made for Carl Crawford. The team is being carried by its pitching which doesnt show in voting.

Didn't see an option to choose one, unless I missed that page. I'll select Dan Uggla for my DH then. xthumbsupx

one of the NL reserves will get the start at DH. Theres no wya to elect a DH when they dont have them.

After comparing stat lines, Pujols is a better selection.

Using these lineups the NL KILLS the AL this year....Webby's sinker causing all those ground ball outs....Who would be the AL pitcher? Cliff Lee?

What can I say, as a Giants fan I'm an NL guy. Lee would probably get the nod for AL starter, although Matsuzaka, Santana and Wang would be given consideration.

I think Matsuzaka will be on the team but he wont pitch.. either he will start just before the all star game or Francona will keep him for the game after at full rest.
