View Full Version : What teams have left you high and dry?

The other thread about dark horses got me thinking. Each year in the past I've tried to find the one or two teams that will emerge from the pack and have a Top 25 season. If anyone picked Texas State a couple years ago or Delaware State last year, you looked pretty smart... but have you had any teams that made you look foolish?
For me:
- 2005 Northwestern State, coming off a playoff run in 2004 with a very good defense, they crapped the bed in 2005 after beating LA-Monroe. I think I had them in my Top 10. xoopsx
- 2006 Idaho State, finished 5-6 in 2005 and then 2-9 in 2006 after I had them around 15. xoopsx
- Illinois State just about every year except 2006... probably the one year I didn't have them in my pre-season Top 25. xoopsx

2004 National Champions JMU crapped the bed pretty bad in 2005 going 7-4 and missing the playoffs despite returning virtually everyone from the 2004 team.

Presbyterian ended the season on an INCREDIBLY frustrating note, losing to CSUcks literally in the last few seconds. xoopsx

Well, if we're counting our own teams...Colgate in 2006. Defending PL Champs, shoulda contended for the League title again, instead went 4-7, first losing season under Biddle and first since they went 0-11 in '95. Oh yeah, and it was my Senior year xoopsx
Outside of that, Furman last year. I realize they were good down the stretch, but that start...

xnodx and this year is tougher, with a slow start this year we will have to win the conference for any playoff consideration:( Anything from 3-1 to 1-3 is concievable prior to the start of conference play

No doubt, but we should have won that game. Losing games that you have in hand with a minute to go is always frustrating. That kinda left a lot of us with a sour taste in our mouths, as instead of being 7-4 our first season we ended up at 6-5. Granted, it was our first effort at I-AA football, but we want to be taken seriously. xpeacex

Well '89, with our alma mater, there's one particular game that comes to mind... playoffs, Riccio, Williamsburg xbangx
Therapy hasn't erased that one from my memory banks yet.

I'm going way back to the Rich Gannon led 1985 Delaware Bluehens. Probably the most underacheiving team Delaware ever had. We had I believe 8 players that were drafted or signed as free agents playing on that squad. (Gannon the only one sticking to an NFL roster) We beat Navy and Temple that year but finished 7-4.

Towson '06 in the last game vs JMU 7-3 playing for a playoff bid, a complete no show. I left at the start of the 4th quarter, 3 quarters after the Tigers left the building.
Injuries kill our 07 season.

xnodx xbawlingx Strange year. A season ending loss to Maine in some of the worst weather I've ever attended a game and the Hens miss the playoffs with two I-A wins.

2003 Northeastern.
Pre Season #1 by Street & Smith, we finished 8-4 and out of the playoffs.
Had bad losses at UMass, Harvard and Hofstra. Blew a big lead against UMass that probably cost us a playoff bid.

Good choice! That team left a lot of us Demon fans shaking our heads. The interesting thing is, that this year's team is getting no love or notice from AGS; and they will likely be SLC and playoff contenders.

I hear that; but that was 2005. Let's wait and see what difference three years and more realistic scheduling can bring. (And hold me to it!)

Honestly I kind of saw that coming you lost 4 out of 5 on the o line and 6 out of the front 7 on defense...More surprising to me was '04, finished 7-4 I believe but that was coming off a NC run with most of the team in tack

I thought they were the opposite. We lost a good deal on both lines coming into '04, which is why Brown, Branch and Co. never could quite get it going
I thought we were pretty complete coming into '06, compared to where we were the year before, though I could be misremembering (;)) a bit
