The Tampa Bay Rays, that's who. Who woulda thunk it?

I do believe I predicted at season start that they would be very good.

Won't it be great when Boston and New York don't make the playoffs? Let's go Jays or A's!

there not going to finish in 1st place. But even then if they finish second in the AL East that in most cases would be better then winning most of the other divisions in baseball

I was reading a blog the other day (which I annoyingly can't find at the moment) saying that teams with the best record in their league on or after May 1 have a 66% chance of making the postseason. I forget the exact numbers, but most of the teams that haven't made it recently have been from the NL, so the AL numbers are somewhere in the 70-75% range. So far the A's, Angels, Rays, and Red Sox have all held the best record in the league, but because of their divisions, at least 1 will miss the postseason. Here's hoping it's the Sox! :D

It's good to know that after all those bad years they had to endure in that organization, there's finally some good to it all, at least in the present.

They should have changed their name sooner, eh? xlolx

It's nice to see them up there, but it will also be intersting to see how long they can hang up there. Also, when the time comes, will they be willing to make a deal or two to get better for the stretch run?

I'll admit I'm surprised. Those kids are playing great ball, now is the time for the Bay Area to get behind them and support them. Longoria is the real deal right now. xthumbsupx

I've been to two games this year and all I can say is that the Trop is easily the ugliest professional sports venue I have ever seen. The turf looks like a worn out, old driving range mat. You can get somewhat of an idea from this pic, but it really looks worse in person.

I've been to the Trop many times and it is ugly. When you see it from the outside you get a funny feeling. It just kind of sits there right off the highway. Since the Astrodome is no longer used professionally the Trop gets my ugly award. xnonono2x

Oh, yeah - the outside is ugly too. It looks like a large UFO landed next to I-275.

The overall stadium atmosphere, though, really does detract from your enjoyment of the game. I think that must be part of the reason a first place team is having a hard time getting fans to come out to the ballpark.

Given Tampa's and Miami's problems with fan attendance, I'm guessin' the old blue-hairs in Florida just don't LIKE baseball. xcoffeex xcoffeex xcoffeex

One of the problems is that there are many Yankees and Sox fans here and they only go to the ballpark when those teams are in town.

Could be they get their fill of cheap games during spring training.

How does Phoenix pull 28k per night then? We've got 12 spring training teams within an HOUR of wherever you are in the valley....we still support the D-Backs (well, somewhat....not like the Yanks or BoSox or Cubbies, but you get my drift).

Too many retirees in Florida with prior loyalty to their hometown team.

The Phoenix area has its share of retirees too, but it also has a growing population taking advantage of the area's growth, and who identify Phoenix as their hometown.xtwocentsx

I think part of the difference there is that the Yanks and BoSox are in the same division as the Rays. Me, I have no problem being a Rays fan as well as pulling for my NL East Phillies.

No, you're absolutely right, Joe. It IS slowly growing....just a painfully slow process...

Miami, however, has a TON of young people. What's THEIR excuse?
