Saw an article today saying the Phillies were talking with the White Sox about a possible deal involving Ryan Howard...I find this hard to believe. Article said they see Howard as the 'prototypical' AL slugger....I think there would be a revolt in the City of Brotherly Love should this come to pass.

What is it with the Phillies and the White Sox? These two are also hooked up. With that said i don't see how this would be attractive for the Phillies unless they're desperate for pitching. Gavin Floyd, Contreras and probably Buehrle are attractive that wouldn't be enough. Pierzynski would be the best choice for a positional player IMO given his bat and his position.

im not sure this works... They have Konerko and Thome under contract already, though Thome's expires at seasons end (theres a 2009 option)

Also I dont see Chicago at this point giving up significat pieces of the major league club while they sit 2.5 games ahead in the AL Central.

They dont have anywhere near enough pieces in the farm to even make a trade for Howard look good from Phillys stand point.

The Yankees would seem like a good fit, perhaps Boston as well. Both have young pitching they could trade and New York will have an opening at 1B/DH beyond this year, they prolly do already lol.

Boston has the whole extend Manny or not question. If they could land a power bat at 1B they could move Youk to LF... of course they could either include Lowell (who Philly had interest in) or Youk in the deal and extend Manny and have a 3-4-5 of Ortiz, Ramirez and Howard.

The one thing the White Sox have is young pitching...

Floyd
Danks
Massett
Broadway
Egbert

Dont forget about Carlos Quenton, Joe Crede, Josh Fields, Brian Anderson

Trading Howard wouldn't be out of the question for the Phils, but they would certainly ask for a lot in return. The Phils have Howard for the next several years since he was a late bloomer and didn't start his major league service until like 3 years ago (the Phils did keep him down and extra year just for that reason). They may have to go through awkward arbitration hearings every year, but Howard's pretty affordable, even for the Phils. The big question is, what would teams give up for Howard? He's already around 30, and he strikes out pretty prodigously. He doesn't hit for average either. Hits some real big HR's, but would people trade the house for him?

The Yankees are more likely to go in the Mark Teixeira direction. The comparison to Tino Martinez is striking: well above average offensively, excellent defensively. With Giambi's ridiculous contract expiring, and 2008 being Teixeira's walk year, the Yankees will certainly be in a strong position to bid for Teixeira's services. Also, he would be a big hit with the New York City Portuguese population.

Never liked the Giambi signing. I remember sitting through Game 5 of the 2001 ALCS when Giambi sailed a throw into a left field on a would be 3-6-3 double play, a critical and costly error for the As. I said to my brother, sitting next to me, "That's what we're getting next year."
