How would you describe your town/city? What sport would be considered #1? And what is the most popular level (High School, College, Pro)?

The Ravens reign in Baltimore, and after 9 straight losing seasons, the O's even take a backseat to them over the summer. Very sad.

Charlotte sucks as a sports city. Now next door in Concord we have "RACIN".

Kind of a tough call in Asheville. Overall it's not that big of a sports town. There are a couple of good high school football teams and the local newspaper does a good job of covering Western Carolina.

A better question might be, which city with football is not a football city? I'd agree with New York, it's Yankees at No. 1, then a big gap to the Mets at No. 2, and another gap to the Giants, Knicks and the rest. Maybe Detroit? I'm not sure what they would be, but with the Lions history I'd guess maybe someone else takes top billing. Same thing with Phoenix.

Would Atlanta be Braves over Falcons?

I went with the biggest city in my region, Boston. I voted for baseball as being the number 1 sport. The Red Sox always draw no matter how well they're doing or not doing. The other Boston teams only get fan support when they are on top, but even then they play second fiddle to the Sox.

I figure Boston would be close for Red Sox/Pats. Atlanta is one of the tougher ones IMO, I'd guess Braves but there is so much apathy for all of the teams.

Unfortunately, Baseball is Charleston's #1 sport. I only say that because of how strong CofC and The Citadel (not this year) programs are. We also have a Single A team (Riverdogs, Yankees Minor League team).
Fortunately, we have a USL Soccer Team. The Soccer Team (Battery) has consistenly been in the running for the league Championship. They also have a four team tournament early in the season with MLS teams in attendance and every other year the WNT comes in town for a game against a foreign WNT.
But Hockey (minor League, ECHL), Golf (We have great courses in the area, namely Kiawah Island and Charleston National), and Tennis (Family Circle Cup, Women's Pro Tennis) would also considered int he top five.
The Citadel is the prime time football here. Although, I spend more time talking Football (Pro/College) than any other sport. A number of people here go to The Citadel, Clemson, and USC games.

It doesn't have to be pro. I'm sure the Texans aren't #1 in Houston. That's the reason I say Tampa is a football city not just the because of the Bucs but football on any level gets support. The basketball played here in Tampa (college and high school) sucks.

My area is right in the middle of U. of Tennessee and Virginia Tech. Both schools dominate pretty much all year in football.
ETSU basketball is probably second with high school sports a close third.

I agree about Boston, which has professional and ACC BCS Football, that baseball is #1 because of the Red Sox. That would hold true for most of the New England area. On the other side of the DMZ in CT where it is New York country, I think it is still baseball but I don't really know because I'm not as familiar with that world.
As for Hartford, it is a basketball city and that's because of the UConVict Sled Dogs Men's and Women's programs. When we had the Whalers, hockey gave hoop a very, very strong run for the number one sport.

In the Twin Cities, most would argue it's the Vikings town... but the Twins have been good for a decade almost now and are coming up fast on a Vikes team that has been just awful. Combined with a new outdoor park in 2010... my guess is the Twins take back this town (it was a baseball town before 1971). Hockey is huge here, but loyalties are divided between the Wild and Gophers... generally you are a huge fan of one or the other. The Timberwolves... they'll be gone in 10 years.

1. Vikings

4. Gopher Hockey
5. High School Hockey - Indiana has a the basketball tourney, Texas has the football playoffs, we have hockey.
6. Gopher Football (the Bison had more fans at a Gopher home game than they did... just sayin)
7. Timberwolves
8. Thunder (USL soccer)
9. Swarm (LAX)
It's a decent sports town... but generally a lot of front-runners here. we arent the worst sports city by any means...

I have been a birds fan my entire life. I played on a tee ball team as a child (actually we used pitching machines instead) named Orioles, and that was it ...I was hooked. I have an autographed Brooks Robinson set ...photo, book, bat, & glove. It took several years to get all of them, as I had to get them when the O's came to play the Angels, and then the Indians to get them. The book came from a signing. I took vacation to go to the first game at Camden.I had t pay $100 for cheap seats from a scalper.
My dad took me to the 1966 series, I was a child and cannot remember, but I can say I saw Luis Aparicio, Jim Palmer, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson. For the Dodgers, I saw Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. I was at the '71 and '79 series as well. In 1979, I lived not too far from Pittsburgh. Still my team to this day ...I think it will only be a couple of years before that farm system pays off for them.
By default I became a Colts fan, not to keep showing my age, but I do remember Unitas quite well. I stayed up to watch them sneak out of town & was in tears. I cannot root for them in Indy though ...just not the same. To think of al the Baltimore Colts memorabilia I through away ...it would really be worth something. I still have a leather Colts jacket though.

Any chance that Marcus Mason will see any playing time this year? Or do we have to worry about him making the practice squad?

For Chicago (I'm not this sure):
1. Cubbies
2. Bears
3. White Sox (yeah, this order depends on where you live in Chicagoland)
4. Bulls (this went down due to the bad standings over the past decade, more recently it went up but it is down again)
5. College sports (Northwestern has its good and bad seasons, so do UIC, DePaul, and the others there)
6. Blackhawks
7. Rush (Arena Football)

I wish Hockey was 3. Really, the NY market only cares about the Rangers, and that's nowhere near the moaning about the trevails of the Knicks. Yankees and Mets baseball is so far in front, then football, though if the Giants and Jets aren't very good and the Knicks are, then you could see basketball becoming #2. But, #2 is as good as it'll get for those
I live in the Mid-Hudson Valley (about 1 1/2 hours north of the city) and sports-wise it's very similar to the city, especially with baseball being #1. High school sports gets a smattering of attention, usually individual schools caring about the sports they are good at (probably Boys Soccer before most others)
In DFW, it's the Cowboys, then some mixture of college football (mostly Texas, but plenty of A&M, Tech, TCU, etc.), maybe even High School Football after that (haven't gotten a good sense of where that fits in overall), then the Mavs are a clear #2 after football. After that it just might be the Stars, but that's probably because they're pretty good while the Rangers....well....Hamilton's good....

Here it is for Boone.
1. App St football
2 - 100. Everything else
App St football is king in Boone. After that, it's a drop before Watauga HS football, ACC basketball (mainly Duke/UNC), Carolina Panthers, App St mens basketball (sad but true), and NASCAR. Couple others thrown in there but it's all just competing for second place. Boone is between a bunch of big cities so sparse groups of fans are around but not plentiful.
In my hometown of Wilmington, NC, it's a big mix. NASCAR, UNCW mens basketball, UNCW baseball, Carolina Panthers, ACC basketball, HS football, Wilmington Hammerheads (USL-2 team), Carolina Hurricanes all take priority at one time or another.
Right now, UNCW baseball is a big deal as they just won the CAA regular season and since they host the CAA tourney, they'll be big favorites for that and might get an at-large if they don't win it. UNCW mens basketball is really big during the winter as UNCW doesn't have football so that's their football season. The Panthers are big but that's more recently. The Hammerheads are always front-page when they're at home but have fallen off recently. Hurricanes are big when they are good and NASCAR is always in the news. The Braves use to be big but now it's a mix of East Coast teams. And of course Duke/UNC and the ACC during basketball season is big. App St football is starting to creep up in Wilmington, but starting from scratch isn't easy.
And at the very bottom of both lists are the Charlotte Bobcats. No one gives a flip about them. Not even Charlotte.

I have to go with baseball, as it nudges out football. While the D'Backs are not setting any NL attendance records, they draw better and have far more fans than the Cardinals or Coyotes. Also, because of the good weather in Phoenix year round, amateur baseball thrives. All you have to do is fly into Sky Harbor airport in January. The greenest fields you see are baseball fields (and golf courses). Even on the youth level, the kids take it seriously enough to actually wear baseball pants for practice. The sporting goods stores all have a good selection of baseball gear. Much better than anything I've seen in the Northeast. That includes national chains such as Dick's and Sports Authority. Also, MLB has a fall minor league in the Phoenix Metro area. Throw in the number of Major Leaguers who grew up in the area, and baseball is the winner.
Football is popular at the high school level, but the dearth of college options for prep kids who want to continue playing holds football back.
