I may be remiss but I think this was overlooked, 3 months shy of his 50th birthday Julio Franco hung them up last week, concluding his 26-year career.
Long live the last member of 5-4-1!!!

I'm surprised he didn't try to stay in the minors until his birthday in August. Last year, when he dropped down to the Braves' minor league system, I figured he'd be there to finish up for a year or two.
Anyone know what happened?

An article I read just said that Julio knew it was time. Basically he said he felt his skills have slipped to the point where he doesnt feel he can still play at the level he expects.

Actually he got 3 years older in 2002 like many Dominicans.

I'm glad he hung it up now rather than becoming a joke like Rickey Henderson.
