making any list like this is a good thing, imo. i dont think you can argue against it from an improvements standpoint, as we have improved GREATLY in the last 3-5 years. do we belong on the list? i dont really know. there are a lot of great athletics departments out there. I certainly believe GVSU and the other lower level schools deserve on the list.....they do by far some of, if not the best work in their respective divisions, and this list is a judge of that rather than public noteability and hype. For whatever reason, Im glad my school was considered.

Isn't the goal of an athletic department to be profitable while putting talented teams on the field? Of course academics is included in that as well.
But from my standpoint, Appalachian State is only good at football. There is no way they should be ahead of Ohio State who has national championship caliber football, basketball, etc.
And if we go off of academics, absolutely nobody can compete with the Ivies, MIT, Stanford, etc.
I just don't understand their criteria. It's a nice honor and all, but I'm very skeptic.

Just a few tid bits from the 2006-2007 Annual Report.....
"En route to winning its 28th Commissioner’s
Cup, Appalachian became
the first institution in modern SoCon
history (1972-) to defeat every team
in the conference in football, men’s
basketball and baseball in the same
academic year."
"For the second-consecutive year,
Appalachian claimed both the Southern
Conference’s Commissioner’s and Germann
Cups in 2006-07. The Commissioner’s
and Germann Cups are presented annually
to the conference’s top all-around
men’s and women’s all-sports programs.
Appalachian is the only institution
in SoCon history to win both cups in the
same academic year, a feat it has now
accomplished eight times.
The Commissioner’s Cup is the 28th
overall and 23rd in the last 24 years for
the Mountaineers’ men’s programs. Conference
championships in football, cross
country and indoor track and field and
the North Division title in men’s basketball
garnered the Apps first with 86.5
points, 16 points ahead of second-place
UNC Greensboro. The 16-point margin of
victory is the third-largest in the 38-year
history of the Commissioner’s Cup.

Ummm, did you even look at the list?
With the way they arranged it I thought it was descending order. Either way, it changes nothing.
Appalachian State simply does not have one of the 15 best athletic departments in the country.
The only thing on that list I agree with is Stanford being number one. They somehow seem to managing having national championship caliber teams, amazingly intelligent student-athletes, with tons of sports and many of them profitably. They know what they are doing in Palo Alto, that is for sure.
Plus, if you want to play that game:
UNI...
Football (I'm sure you all familiar with UNI's success, albeit not as much as ASU)
Men's Basketball (2004, 2005, and 2006 trips to the NCAA tournament)
Volleyball (2006 and 2007 trips to the NCAA tournament and MVC Champs)
Men's Indoor Track (top 10 national ranking and MVC Champs)
Women's Indoor Track (MVC Champs)
Wrestling (20th in the nation ranking, WWC Champs)
Men's Outdoor Track (national ranking, and will win the MVC title)
Women's Outdoor Track (will also win the MVC title)
Baseball (currently atop the MVC, even ahead of top ten ranked Wichita State)
UNI has much more national success overall compared to Appalachian State. Sure you have the football success (although UNI is not too far behind) but UNI kills in other sports. Plus the MVC is a much harder, more nationally competitive conference than the SoCon.
Does UNI deserve to be on this list? Hell no.
I'm sure some Mountaineer fans will jump on this, so have at it.

This survey/report is about as objective as all the university rankings for best value schools: top national universities/ B schools...the list goes on.
I think (while I enjoy the pub) these rankings are absolutely meaningless.
Our basketball, baseball and soccer teams are regionally mediocre. I could give a rat's arse about the Commissioners Cup or Germain's Cup. We used to have a nationally ranked soccer program and let it get away from us.
Get my teams into the playoffs. Nothing else is acceptable. Keep your rankings.
