If he's gonna block the plate without the ball then he should be ready to get hit.

I third 81Jag's motion.
OP, why do you ask? Did something controversial happen that I missed?

Hear hear! They've been playing baseball that way for over 150 years. It ain't broke, so let's not fix it.

In the ninth inning last nite, Victor Martinez had the plate blocked before he had the ball, Pedroia tried to go around but couldnt get the plate and by the time he got up the ball was there and he got tagged out.
Someone over on YF vs SF made a big deal about it....
Now Pedroia could have tried to knock Martinez onto his ass, but Pedroia woulda prolly bounced all the way back to third base lol

Slide in spikes high baby!!! Yeah, the catcher is equipped with "tools of ignorance," but you can still hit the hip or thigh!

The basepath is like a train track and if the cathcer wants to stand on a train track, he better get ready to meet the freight train.

Yes, it increases the chance of injury, but that is part of the game. Baseball doesn't have enough 'high' moments during games as other sports, hence some of its criticism. The 'play at the plate' is one of the high drama moments of all sport. Don't lessen its importance by making the catcher 'step aside'..

As I think most people are saying here, I pick both A & D.

I guess I'll have to volunteer to play the wimp in this thread, since no one else has.
I think what you're really saying is that baseball doesn't have as many violent collisions as other sports ("hence some of its criticism"). But a play at the plate has plenty of drama without being reduced to a contest of brute physical force, which is apparently what most people here want it to be. If I want to see f**cks knocked on their asses, I'll watch football or hockey or boxing. But it's just not part of baseball, and the rules should discourage it.

We do not let fielders block a base without the ball. A second baseman cannot stand on the bag to block a runner going from first to third...if he does that, the runner is awarded the next base. So if the catcher wants to block home plate, bowl him over. Don't go around him.
Shoulders down, square to the chest.

Pedroia should've jumped over him Willie Mays Hayes style.

One of my favorite moments in MLB was circa 1993 when then Tigers Catcher Mickey Tettleton (6' 2" 215lbs) not a small man... was awaiting a throw from center field as Frank Thomas (6'5" 275Lbs) was headed home at full speed...
Tettleton is set-up at the plate Thomas is half way and moving fast...
Tettleton takes a quick look - evaluates the timing - stands up from the plate (which he was blocking) and takes a step backwards letting Thomas and the ball arrive simultaneously... while Tettleton watches from behind the plate and lets the ball roll to the backstop
After the game he had a few hysterical quotes... "I had the rest of my life hanging in the balance while I'm waiting for the ball"
Too Hysterical

My favorite catcher/base runner confrontation was during Game 5 of the 1968 World Series. The Cardinals led the Tigers 3-1 in the series and were up 3-2 in the 5th inning. Lou Brock tried to score from second on a single, but Bill Freehan blocked the plate, held onto the ball and tagged Brock out. The Tigers went on to win that game and games 6 & 7 to complete the comeback.
