NCAA beach volleyball. I did not believe it myself, but after some reading today, it seems like this sport will make the "emerging sports list" before we know it. Since 1994, four women's sports have gone from "emerging sports" status to "championship sports". Those sports are rowing, ice hockey, water polo and bowling.
Teams competing at this year's national tournament included USC, Texas, Wisconsin, Clemson and Nebraska. Apparently, the SEC is heavily behind this as they held their first-ever beach volleyball tournament this year. The Big East Conference is planning a tournament for 2009 and the NCAA should be petitioned soon to add it to the "emerging sports" list.
If you ask me, this sport will move quickly. It'd like cross country is to track and field. Some schools may add an additional coach, but you can probably have the same coach or coaches that you have during the fall indoor season coach your beach volleyball team.
