TSU Football Spring Practice Begins Monday

Houston- Texas Southern Football spring practices begin Monday, April 7th for the 2008 season under the leadership of new Head Coach Johnnie Cole. The team will go through drills and conditioning five days a week through April 25th.

The practices will be held at TSU’s Alexander Durley field from 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm Monday thru Friday and the public is welcomed. The spring game is scheduled for April 26, 2008 at 3:30 pm at Texas Southern.

Texas Southern’s most celebrated new player for the 2008 season is former Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid. In 2006 at OSU, Reid passed for 2266 yards with 24 touchdowns and rushed for 500 yards with five touchdowns. The Houston native was the Houston Touchdown Club’s Offensive Player of the Year and all-Greater Houston, all-District and the district MVP his senior year at North Shore high school. Reid led his team to the 2003 State Class 5A Championship in an undefeated season. He was named to both the national and Texas top 100 recruiting lists.

That release listed several forms of information including a 2007 year in review of stats, 2008 signees, 2008 schedule, etc..

The previous TxSo site was pretty bad -- partially because those images were massive and made it rough to get into the site. Hopefully the content is better as well (though I think this was partially the students writing, which is great -- but they need to prepare for that next step off the site before getting on there)...

Springing into football, among other things

Two days into the official start of the Johnnie Cole era at TSU, one can get a sense that this isn't the same Tigers football team that sputtered and stumbled through an 0-11 season in 2007.

"It hasn't hit me that my life has come full circle and that I'm coaching here at my alma mater," said Cole following Tuesday's practice, where the TSU receivers begin adjusting to the heater that is Bobby Reid's arm. B-Reid may have missed out on significant playing time at Oklahoma State last fall, but he can still throw with any QB on any college campus.

TSU knows that Reid will produce, but they will spend the rest of their spring session sorting through the usual process that comes with building a program from the ground up. While WRs William Osbourne and B.J. Haith (who could put up some impressive numbers in Cole's HOBO [high octane big play offense]) are proven, the search for other reliable hands is at the top of a long list of things Cole and his staff want to accomplish. Not too far from that is finding a running game that existed in name only last fall.

Defensively, the Tigers have to replace the bulk of their secondary, along with finding replacments for LB Mike Boyd, DB Lamar Herron and DE Derrick Gray, their top three performers from last season.

The team had company on the field during Tuesday's session, as an ESPN film crew came out to shoot a piece on Reid that will air on Saturday as part of The Worldwide Leader's spring football special. Also on the field: Texans WR Jacoby Jones, who played for Cole at Lane College and is working with the Tigers' wideouts.
