Tough open to the slate with three on the road including back to back trips to Louisiana...
If they can go 2-2 in that opening four, I'll be impressed -- but that may not put them in a good position for the playoffs, unless there's a 12th game somewhere...

First four weeks are before schools starts so that should help. I like the scheudule if they can add a 12th game with a FCS team. I would have prefered to play Wisconsin earlier in the year, but they were running out of options. San Diego State is beatable. Cal Poly beat them in 2006 and Cal Poly has a better team in 2008.

Remember, last time Cal Poly played San Diego State, Cal Poly won 16 - 14 with much less talent than they have this year. It will be a challenge but Cal Poly COULD win the first four games.
A 12th game is still very much preferred -- hopefully the AD, Alison Cone can get the job done. I would bet a nickel that the team spends the week in Louisiana rather than coming back as classes will not yet have started. We shall see...

The only good thing that would come of only playing 11 games is that Cal Poly would have a bye the week before the South Dakota State game.

Assuming that it is even possible to book an entire hotel up for a whole week, do you realize the costs of that as well as a weeks worth of food for an entire time, plus renting out practice fields somewhere and laundry service?
Not logistically possible.

I am with Pauly LB on this one. I am betting that Cal Poly stays in LA. between the McNeese State and Northwestern State game. They would have to house and feed the team back in California any way because school will not be in session. They will also save money on only flying once.

I'm sure they would since the two schools are in different parts of the state. Would also give the team a chance to acclimate to the heat.

They are not required to be there during the summer. They are required to be there once the season begins and the team is then required to house and feed them.

The School would begin paying housing and meal expenses once fall practice starts. Kids must find their own place to stay and food for the summer. I highly doubt Poly will stay in LA for the week. There would be ridicilious amounts of equipment to move for one week. The coaches need their film equipment, trainers would need a ton of supplies, etc. It would be cheaper to just fly back and teams would always prefer to stay and practice at their own joint.

The football team is not paying for dorm costs or meal plan costs. Not to mention probably only the freshmen live on campus anyway.
Everything on a road trip comes directly out of the team's pockets.
Guaranteed they will not be staying in LA for the week.

Since you consider yourself an expert, let me make this comment...
You know, you could be exactly correct but that would not be because you know anything regarding the Cal Poly football program so there is no need to pretend. So, I am not quite sure where you get your guarantee.
Slostang is correct with his comments. I do know for a fact that staying out for a week-plus is currently being considered. First of all, school will not have started so that time is available. Second, being out additional time is not without precedent as they did that last year before the Southern Utah game. They did that for two reasons -- first of all to prepare for the altitude change in Utah, secondly for team building, and third to reward the players for their hard work.
Normally the biggest expense in travel for collegiate game is the to and from and not the in between. Sure being out a week probably is more expensive but then perhaps that is being funded by the monies that Cal Poly will earn from the Wisconsin game. But then, that really is not my (or your) concern.
As for the freshmen, they show up in August for the start of summer camp. Since the dorms will not yet be available, the coaches line them up with players who have off campus housing and of course feed them.
So, if you are correct and Cal Poly does not stay out a week for both games, that is only because you just happened to guess right. Slostang is probably Cal Poly's #1 fan and he has great passion and knowledge supporting Cal Poly football so usually when he has something to say, Cal Poly fans tend to listen (or read) !!!

Uncle Buck...
When the freshmen show up in August they will each be assigned to off campus housing with veteran players. They will spend most of the time with the team including all meals (I think last year dinner was at HomeTown Buffet). The dorms do not open until a few days before the term begins which is the week of September 27th. By then Cal Poly will have already played four games.

Wow, i can't believe they don't open something up earlier for the team. Just remembering camp when i played it seems like too much of an invitation for mischief. Seems like it's working though. I also remember Hometown Buffet from my California days, nothing like all you can eat!

I am glad you are going to make the game. If the past four or five games are any indication of how good this game is going to be, it should be one hell of a game. If you have time you should go wine tasting, check out Morro Bay and of course tailgating.

Thanks for the advice! I love wine tasting. I went in Napa a couple of years ago. I have yet to head to Tamecula though and it's supposed to be a decent wine country too. Is there a particular vineyard you would reccomend?

I am sure that Slostang can make some recommendations. In Arroyo Grande which is just south of San Luis Obispo we like Laetitia Winery. In Temecula our favorite is Thornton Winery.

I would be willing to bet hotel and food wouldn't even come close to half the $70-80K. I don't understand how they would go to class, practice without facilities/a scout team/training room.
Staying for a week between games is silly. Whats the difference between having two back to back away games in different states and two in the same state? It doesn't really matter where the plane lands, it's still a pain in the a$$.

School does not start until the following week so that would not be a problem.

But as Andy said it is silly.
Imagine the hotel and food bill alone for the whole team. And that would literally have to be the entire team. They have to have the scout team there to practice, etc.
That also means that they would likely have to charter a larger plane.
Throw that cost on there as well.
Guaranteed it will not happen.
And when it does not happen, it will prove that I was correct all along.

If it does NOT happen, that does NOT prove anything other than the Cal Poly football staff decided NOT to stay out for the week. Like Slostang said, it is being considered. Your "Guaranteed it will not happen" is NOT a guarantee -- it is merely your uninformed opinion !!!

Assuming that it is even possible to book an entire hotel up for a whole week, do you realize the costs of that as well as a weeks worth of food for an entire time, plus renting out practice fields somewhere and laundry service?
Not logistically possible.
The average price for the Holiday Inn in Sulphur, LA (where opposing teams sometimes stay) is $67 for 2 people in a room per night. Let's assume 10% tax and it's $73.70 per 2 people per night. 150 for 7 days at that rate is $77,385. And I don't know if you're right about having to take the entire team. Could very well be they could get away with taking maybe 100 people on the trip; which would lower the price to $51,590. There's food and everything of course but I think by the time it's all over it could be a lower cost if the earlier post was correct about it costing $70,000 or $80,000 per flight. If that's round trip you're talking about two round trips for a total of $140,000 to $160,000. Plus you still have to have one or two nights in a hotel and meals for that travel period anyway so you might be getting into the $200,000 area.
It's been a long time but Montana came and played Louisiana Tech and McNeese in consecutive weeks back in 1991 and if I remember correctly the Griz did stay in Louisiana between the two games.

Thanks for the information. I am not certain of the number but the whole team would not be traveling. I believe that the NCAA regulates the number of players that travel to I believe 64. That being the case the total would probably be in the 100 range as you note above. The place that would need to be corrected is that the team would travel on either the Thursday or Friday before the first game so would probably be spending a total of 10 nights in a hotel. The $200,000 that you note above for two trips may be on the high side -- you probably would be in the $160 - $180,000 range. So assuming 10 nights for 100 people would put the total in the $73,700 range plus incidentals and food would probably end up in the $100,000 range.
As for the rest of the team that does not make the travel squad they would continue to work out with the redshirt freshmen at home. The reality is the players know that in order to travel they have to make the travel squad. They don't just get to take the trip and then not dress just because they might be lonely.

April 9th, 2008, 01:16 PM
If the team left on Thursday for each game then there would only be 5 additional nights by staying between games (Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday). They would already be staying Thursday and Friday night for both the McNeese State and Northwestern State games.
Let's use John's #'s for the hotel ($73.70/2=$36.85 per person) and say about $35.00 per person each day for food. That means $71.85 per person per day for food and lodging. A travel party of 100 x $71.85 x 5 days=$35,925. There would be additional expenses (ground transportation, laundry, renting practice facilities, ect...), but they could come in way under $70,000.
The thing here is that I do not believe that money is the only consideration as Pauly LB has stated. I think they would use it as a team building experience. It may not happen, but it is being looked at.

Only thing is I remember that game at McNeese in 1991 and it looked to me like Montana really wore down in the second half. It was hot and humid so I don't know if it was a factor too. But being away from home also could've been. And didn't Montana come down by bus?
My parents actually met the Montana players in a restaurant. My parents told me that the Montana players were talking about how good their quarterback was. I think it was Lebo.

While one would think that UND should be on the Cal Poly schedule this year, the problem is that USD already is on the schedule. Since this is year one of the transition from D2 to D1 they are still considered D2 and that would put two non-D1 counting games on Cal Poly's schedule. I would expect that Cal Poly's schedule next year will include UND.

The thing that McNeese State has going for it being the first of the two Cal Poly games in Louisiana is that the Mustangs wont be use to the heat and humidity. Hopefully by the time they play Northwestern State that will be less of a factor.
