Catamount Football Winds Down Winter Training; Preps for Spring Drills Under Wagner
WCU concludes strenuous off-season workouts; spring practice begins March 31
Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina and first-year head coach Dennis Wagner will begin to make the transition from off-season into preparing for the rapidly approaching 2008 gridiron season over the weekend with the first day of spring practice slated for Monday, March 31 at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field.
Wagner plans on utilizing afternoon practices during the week, with meeting and practice times in the morning on weekends, including scrimmage sessions. The squad will practice five days a week, taking both Wednesday's and Sunday's off from team activities.
"During our spring practices, we will focus on becoming more fundamentally sound on the field, as well as relaying the structure we want to have as we approach next season," said Wagner. "We will spend some time implementing our basic offense and defensive systems, but will not go into any great detail."
The NCAA-regulated, 15-days of off-season practice will be spread over a 20-day period, culminating with the annual Spring Game at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 19th at Whitmire Stadium/Waters Field in Cullowhee. Festivities will commence with the first-ever "A Taste of Tailgating" at the stadium with area vendors providing free food samples for fans.
Off-season workouts implemented by Wagner and his staff have included 6:00 am sessions including conditioning as well as weight lifting aspects. Wagner feels the team has made improvements in physical conditioning which will translate into an effective spring session.
Western Carolina lost 13 seniors off last season's squad, including All-Southern Conference selections in running back/return specialist Mike Malone and single-season receiving record holder, Eddie Cohen, who was also named second team All-American a year ago. All told, the Catamounts will have to replace five starters on offense and three on defense, as well as specialist Stephen Brown.
Catamount Athletics Announces Festivities Surrounding Annual Spring Game, April 19th
Event to include a 'A Taste of Tailgating' beginning at Noon when the gates open
March 26, 2008
Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina Athletics today announced the start time and festivities revolving around its annual Spring Football game, slated for Saturday, April 19. The event will kickoff with the first-ever, "A Taste of Tailgating" with area vendors providing free food samples beginning when gates open at Noon. The Spring Game will begin at 1:00 pm, and culminate with a post-game, on-field autograph session with the Catamount coaches and players.
A complete listing of the local restaurants participating in the "A Taste of Tailgating" will be posted the week prior to the Spring Game. Also, a detailed game format will be released at the same time.
Also in conjunction with the annual game, the WCU Ticket Office will unveil new seating arrangements at Whitmire Stadium for the 2008 season, as well as be offering special season ticket pricing available on-site the day of the Spring Game. Season ticket renewals for the upcoming season will also be sent out prior to the game to allow returning ticket holders to claim their seats from last season, or to be the first to make changes for '08.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Dennis Wagner, Western Carolina is scheduled to open its annual spring drills on the afternoon of Monday, March 31 at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field in Cullowhee. The squad is wrapping-up off-season, winter strength and conditioning activities this week - which included 6:00 am running and weight lifting sessions - in preparation for the first team practice.

Are the Cats upgrading the uniforms or helmet logos with the new coach or what???
Yes, but it is going to be very basic and simple. For now, nobody but the coaches know and the team did sign a contract with Adidas to be fitted from head to toe, but by all early rumors, it's gonna be simple and plain jane, the way Wagner wants it to be.
I would look for purple on gold with purple helmets with gold "WESTERN carolina"as the logo, but again, going by what I've been told, not what will actually come to be. In fact, I was kidding with Coach Wagner tonight at the meet and greet to bring back the gold pants and he just grinned and said he'll do what is best for the team. He's a no frills kind of coach and it will show on gameday as it is already showing in winter workouts and in the classroom.
Can't wait!!! GO CATAMOUNTS!!!

Yeah, the puppy dogs really kicked our butts last year.... 31-37.
The Cats may just bring a surprise or two to Charleston, and as far as a drive for five....I wouldn't count that chicken before it's hatched.....

how many meaningless td's did you score at the end to make the score look somewhat respectible?

I seem to recall that Western scored 21 points in the 4th and the Citadel scored 6. I don't think any of the points Western scored were "meaningless" or to make the score more respectible.
That happens in games that are out of reach, the Citadel game was NEVER out of reach.

There is no doubt the asu game was a runaway and we lost to furman by 30 points.... but not so with the citadel, it was a winnable game for Western, and that's what kills citidog.

Dang citdog, you must have had either ESP or was at a different game than I attended. At the end of the first quarter, the score was WCU 3, the citadel 7..
That was one heck of a predictor of the "blow out" that NEVER occurred.
There's a lot of SoCon teams that can talk trash to us about last year.... but the citadel and Elon ARE NOT among them.
