....because they sent a catcher with a decent arm but absolutely no bat down to the minors...THAT'S why they always finish last? Quite a stretch.

Hes better then Laird

Laird hit .224/.278/.349 with 9 HR in 407 AB

Salty was .251/.290/.431 with 11 HR in 308 AB

"What have you done for me lately?"

Saltalamacchia batted .250 in 13 spring training games, with two home runs, eight RBIs and eight strikeouts. In 14 games before Wednesday, Laird was hitting .263 with four homers and nine RBIs.

BTW, still waiting on your explanation concerning how this explains why they always finish last.

because they make stupid decisions

I don't see how that is a stupid decision. It's not like we're comparing Johnny Bench to some Joe Shmo. Neither of the catcher's was very good to begin with. They chose Laird because he had ever so slightly better stats, and probably some other intangibles that we cannot see. They sent the other guy down to the minors so that he can get some good game time instead of riding the bench half the time behind Laird. It's called development.

Oh man... I thought this was a thread slaming the "great" ;) state of Texas! I can always get on board with that discussion.

It's really because the Rangers have never, ever had decent pitching. Thank you, Dubya!:p

THAT...and AROD. xnodx But it's certainly not because they chose one mediocre catcher over another.

Another angle on this (and I'm not sure it's the one that UNHWCs was going for) is that Saltalamachia (sp?) was the only current "major leaguer" they got in the Teixiera trade and he's not good enough to keep his roster spot.

So, they essentially traded Teixiera and a pitcher for five minor league prospects, one of which is already on his way down...

I can definitely see that angle. xnodx ...posting some facts goes a long way in supporting your statements!

Nolan Ryan?

Nolan Ryan?

Ryan's best years were with the Angels and Astros. Anyway, one decent starter every few years won't git 'er done! :p They've had a couple others who have had a decent season or two -- Rick Helling comes to mind -- but not much else. And Fergie Jenkins -- almost forgot him.

I wish the Braves could have figured out a way how to use Saltalamacchia instead of trading him, but I'm fine with Teixiera at first and McCann at catcher. Saltalamacchia was very good, but the Braves, and it seems the Rangers too, have no need for him.

The Rangers have been terrible since they were in DC back in the 60s. It's not the fault of just George Bush or moving down Saltalamacchia.

Aaron Sele won 37 games over two seasons for them too. Was the same time as Rick Helling was there and doing good.

Didn't he throw a no-hitter or 2 with the Rangers? xeyebrowx

If that's washed-up, count me in xnodx

But yeah, of all the dumb things Texas has done, this barely ripples on the Richter Scale xcoffeex

...unless of course someone had Salty on their Fantasy team :p

Yes, but those were Sele's and Helling's peak seasons in otherwise mediocre careers. More importantly, their win totals were inflated because Texas' offense was really good in that time, with a healthy Juan Gone and juiced-up Raffy Palmeiro.
