Davidson University in Davidson, NC, population 7,500, with a student body of 1,700, tuition of $31,000 + another $10,000 for room and board.
In an attempt to try and equal out the game attendance against the mighty State University of Wisconsin, Davidson Administration is offering students free bus tranportation to Detroit, free 2 nights hotel stay and a free ticket to the game! Now I don't care how much tuition and all that other stuff is, that's a nice!

I am very proud of the way Davidson has played in the tournament this year. xnodx
However, I do not have to love them:p Step up and play scholarship football in the SoCon. Furman does it. Wofford does it. and we both do it successfully xnodx

What he said regarding the football, even though he had to enlighten me as to why.
Still though, go Davidson! I can't remember the last team from the Southern Conference won in the tournament. East Tennessee maybe?

Chattanooga won in the first round in 1997, and Chattanooga made it to the Sweet 16 that year.
VMI was the last SoCon team to make the Elite 8, in 1976.
West Virginia was the last SoCon team to make the Final 4, which they did in 1959.

So that's who Mr. C is. He corrected me on a post via PM. I didn't understand why he used that method, so I posted it on this site. It's all getting clearer now.

Just have to say for that much money, not only should the trip/hotel/tickets be free, but they should get one of those hookers like Spitzer got thrown in as well.

That was a solid column....of course he mentioned that American won the NEC and Drake beating WKU would have been a big upset, but the premise was good and probably right.

Davidson has had a good run. I admire their success, but I do not respect them since they choose not to man up and play SoCon football in spit eof the fact theat they have better resources than at least a few members that do play football. As far as loving them, that will never happen.

The school that doesn't make sense is Creighton in the MVC.
They have an enrollment of like 6,000 students but they play in an NBA caliber arena in front of 16,000 fans! They clearly have the support and the money, but I have no idea if they have ever even supported football.
Plus, they would have to deal with the Huskers over in Lincoln. Not an easy task.

I don't have a problem with that. If they want basketball to come before football, then that's fine. I don't think there is any team in the conference that has the resources to be good in both SoCon basketball and SoCon football.

College of Charleston, UNC Greensboro, and Davidson all play basketball, but don't have football teams.
Well, davidson does, but is a non-scholarship team that isn't in the Southern Conference where they play basketball.

Don't get me wrong, Davidson pushes the Southern Conference to play better basketball, but I want to see equal grounds for those teams. That means pick any of the sports a university wants to maintain. Just make sure all schools maintain Football and Basketball, which are the bigger dollar sports.

I think terriorbob is referring to non-football schools that play basketball in conferences that sponser FBS football. In which case schools like Marquette, DePaul, Providence, Seton Hall, and St. John's, all in the Big East, would be examples.

The only other ones besides the five Big East schools are Denver, South Alabama, Arkansas-Little Rock, and UNO in the Sun Belt.
The ACC, SEC, Pac-10, Big Ten, Big XII, CUSA, MAC, MWC, and WAC all have the same membership for football and basketball.

Creighton did have football and were MVC members when the MVC sponsored football as a conference sport, but like many Jesuit universities did not bring football back after WWII or Korean Conflict era. The Jesuits tend to be pretty liberal and football just doesn't fit in their frame work.

I will say it again. I was rooting for them as hard as any non-Davidson fan could against Wisconsin.
However, and realizing there are exceptions for different schools and different conferences, generally, there are three fan supported sports in College football. Football, then to a lesser extent basketball and then to even a lesser extent baseball. Having schools that don't play the major fan supported sport in the conference lessens the rivalries and doesn't promote the conference overall in my opinion. Listen to this board.
You hear SoCon jabber about Davidson and C of C, mainly because they have been good in basketball. But for the most part it is a big shoulder shrug. Western and Chatt have been bottom of the barrel in football for years, but we still talk about them with enthusiasm.
How many SoCon fans say one damn thing about Greensboroxeyebrowx It is almost like they are not in the conference at all.
