Granted, Marichal and Spahn are two of the all-time best pitchers. But does anyone really think Greg Maddux would have attempted this in his prime, even if allowed to?

That was quite a duel.

If you really want to go way back in time check out a guy like "Smokey" Joe Wood and type of innings he pitched.

I agree 100% about the MLB pitchers of today.

In 1920, the longest game in MLB history was played between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves, and lasted 26 innings, ending in a 1-1 tie.

The two pitchers, Leon Cadore and Joe Oeschger, each pitched the entire game, all 26 innings.

Wow. 15.1 innings for Spahn and only 2K's

Agreed about today's pitchers.

Aren't all baseball players kind of wimps (at least those who aren't juiced)?

I've never heard an athlete in any other sport injuring himself by sneezing or getting a stiff neck on the plane.

This site (http://www.funny2.com/baseball.htm) has some other unusual injuries that kept players out of games.

What a great site! I might add that none of it surprises me. I remember when a former Red Sox player named Mike Greenwell had to get sent to tne AAA affiliate because... he had sore ribs. Another pussy.

Interesting site....and interesting choice of modern player to compare them to. In his heyday, Maddux might have been one of the FEW modern players who would have attempted this type of thing. Of course, in this era of pitch counts and double switches at the first sign of trouble, I doubt any manager would ever stick with him that long. And in looking at the box score, Spahn only gave up 10 hits, the last one being the home run to Willie Mays....looks like he started tiring in the 16th.... xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx

Could you imagine if there was Fantasy Baseball back in the 40s 50s and 60s?

Sure, Spahn went 15+, but he killed me by getting only 2 K's!

Or...I picked up both Aaron and Mathews in my auction, and they went a combined 0-for-8....
