I actually picked Pitt to win the second round game. Baylor had lost 3 straight coming into the NCAA's. They had Fresno outmatched, but their lack of momentum could hurt against Pitt.

I did too, but when the shots aren't falling…

Vandy actually only rebounded the Lady Griz by 5, which surprised me (UM won the boards in the 2nd. half). This was one of the worst matchups the Lady Griz could have drawn in the first round. I think the Commodores are going to waste West Virginia on Monday.

Montana should be better next year with 4 senior starters returning (unless Tolbert replaces Guardipee in the starting lineup). Also, 3 good recruits are coming in (Ali Hurley from Anaconda, Ashley Ferda from Whitefish, & Tianna Ware from Bakersfield, CA—Ware will be only the second African-American to play for the Lady Griz).

If you feel the need to be amused/angered, you should read the thread for the Vandy-UM game on eGriz. There are a few posts that show mind-boggling stupidity.

Correction: Vandy won the boards by 8 (CSTV's Gametracker was way off). The Lady Griz did win rebounding in the second half by 2, but they only shot 21%. UM shot 29% for the game, a season low.

Committing 22 turnovers (about 8 above the season average) didn't help Montana, either.

That seems to be pretty typical for the women's tourney. Still not a lot of depth in Women's basketball.

Hmmmm. It seems like every year there has been at least one double-digit seed to knock off one of the Top 5 seeds somewhere. I know between Marist, Middle Tennessee, and Cal-Santa Barbara over the years that's been the case. Wonder when the last time all Top 5 seeds made it passed the 1st round?

mvemjsunpx
March 25th, 2008, 12:32 AM
I just saw on one of the local news broadcasts that 13,14,15, & 16 seeds are just 6-234 in first round games.

One of those was, of course, Harvard's upset of injury-plagued top seed Stanford in 1998. The other five were all 13-seeds beating 4-seeds. 15-seeds & 14-seeds have never won a game in the NCAA women's tournament.

If I'm not mistaken last season Marist College was a 13-seed and knocked off 4th seeded Ohio State with Jessica Davenport in the 1st round. Interestingly enough, Marist went on to the Sweet 16 by knocking off 5th-seeded Middle Tennessee State in the 2nd Round.

In the previous four years, Middle Tennessee State as a 12-seed knocked off NC State as a 5-seed and two years earlier as a 13-seed, MTSU knocked off North Carolina as a 4-seed.

So there's a few examples of teams that were 12-seeds or lower scoring upsets just within the past five years or so.

Wow. Pittsburgh beat Baylor? And even though they lost, I think Florida State proved they deserved to be in the NCAA Tournament especially when you look at all those other teams on the bubble that were arguing that FSU didn't belong. Interestingly enough, those same "bubble" teams made early 1st or 2nd round exits in the WNIT.

Marists' run comes to an end this time failing to make it to the Sweet 16. Sylvia Fowles proved to be a wall or defense for the Red Foxes.

I think the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 rounds is where we may finally see some of the Top dogs get knocked off. Somehow I still see Tennessee and UConn in the finals.
