Aside from the Manager how much do you think a baseball coach makes?

Yeah, it's for the coaches and staff not the players

I agree, the coaches aren't really high-paid.

They're wanting the athletic trainers, the secretaries, and the position coaches paid, not themselves. How's that selfish?
Until you work with a team, whether it's professional or collegiate, you don't truly know what goes into a road trip. I've only been a part of college football trips, and I know how much goes into that, so I can't imagine a cross-continental trip.

I agree that it's not selfish but what really was the deal? Maybe this was the agreement and people later thought that it wasn't fair that the staff was not getting paid. Maybe there was a mix up in what each side thought Teams have gone to Asia to play before - what was the deal there?
That said as I said on another thread, a $40,000 stipend is a joke. No way anybody should be getting that much to be out there for 2 games.

there also playing two exhibition games there as well, and while they dont count for anything that doesnt mean that the coaches arent there any less time for them or work any less.

Also The Angels got paid $31,593.75 shares last season two lose a three game series to Boston.... those shares were also paid to coaches and they didnt have to travel all the way to Japan. The $40,000 isnt a ridiculous amount of money.

They are also providing clinics (the fundamentals and coaching kind, not the malaria shot kind).

Then the Red Sox shouldn't have agreed to those terms if they were only going to cry about it later. xrolleyesx

Great and that was agreed to in a contract which he signed with the Yanks. My question was what was the agreement? We heard the team's side. I like to hear both sides (including the MLB side) before I make my decision. As I said, if this was agreed to beforehand, then they should get the money. If not, they should not be getting the money.

That was money they EARNED for qualifying for the playoffs. It's like a bonus for getting to the playoffs or reaching a performance incentive. And (serious question since I don't know) does all staff get that? And was that agreed to ahead of time? I'm sure it was.
That said $40,000 is a ridiculous amount of money. I think we all agree that most of the staff isn't making a lot of money and this is a significant amount for them to get. A stipend is meant to defray expenses. If anyone spends $40,000 out there, they have problems since food, travel and lodging are probably all paid for for them. Once again, if it was agreed to beforehand, they should get it but that is a lot of money.

I understand it was a sarcastic remark (funny with the Mary and Bill remark ;) ) but people like UNH are saying that $40,000 is a drop in the bucket and your comment best illustrated my point.

OK if your boss wanted you to go work in Japan and as part of the compensation package he offered you to get you to agree was that he would buy you a house and a car as well as a $50,000 a year raise... Then just before you were to head there he told you that instead of a house you get an apartment and instead of a car you get a public transportation pass and instead of $50,000 you het $10,000 what would you do?
The Red Sox, A's and MLB had an agreement that said for going to play In Tokyo the players AND COACHES would receive a $40,000 stipend.
MLB then backed off and decided not to give it to the coaches as agreed upon in order to get the two teams to make the trip.
If the Red Sox didn't make a stand, MLB would only continue this kind of crap for years to come.

Your right, for PLAYERS and COACHES ONLY, NOT for trainers, Secretary's, the Limo drive, the Ball Boy, the Pilot, Fuzzy Dice etc.etc.

He opted out. The Yanks should have let him walk. I'd rather root for some likeable kid than this me-first prima donna, even if we don't win the World Series with the kid.

Managers and coaches were included in the players' pool payments for baseball's two previous opening trips to Japan -- the New York Mets played the Chicago Cubs in 2000 and the Yankees played Tampa Bay in 2004. But there was no such provision this time in the agreement between MLB and the players' association.
