SoCon Spring Primer

FCS Writer Josh Buchanan releases some early predictions on the Southern Conference.
2008 Southern Conference Spring Primer: Can Moore go for four?
Can Appalachian State win a fourth straight SoCon title? It will be tough to do but Jerry Moore has landed some solid transfers, a top recruiting class and returns plenty of speed from last year’s title team to make the Mountaineers the definite front-runner this year.
Below is a look at how the preseason All-SoCon team could look and a glimpse at how we believe the league title race will go down. These predictions are for spring 2008 and are subject to change prior to the 2008 league preview that will be released later this summer.
Predicted Order of Finish
1. Appalachian State - Quarterback Armanti Edwards (2nd team All-American, 38 total touchdowns) headlines a younger offense from 2007; the defense is led by a strong front seven featuring linebackers Pierre Banks (108 tackles, 7 TFL's, 2 sacks) and DJ Smith (121 tackles, 2 INT , 11 PBU). Can this team win four straight national championships?
2. Furman - Losing Jerome Felton (12 rushing TDs) will hurt; tight end Larry Hedden (421 yards, 3 TDs), offensive tackle Joel Bell (1st team All-SoCon) and defensive back Thomas Twitty (95 tackles, 1 INT , 6 PBU) headline the returnees. Sophomore Mike Brown will become the new offensive workhorse.
3. Elon - Elon boasts the most exciting quarterback to wide receiver tadem in the league: signal caller Scott Riddle (3,817 yards, 31 TDs) and wideout Terrell Hudgins (1,474 yards, 18 TDs) are the best the conference has seen since Richie Williams and DaVon Fowlkes.
4. Georgia Southern - Quarterback Jayson Foster (30 total TDs) is gone; leading tackler Chris Covington (66 Tackles) and sophomore linebacker E.J. Webb (57 tackles, 5 TFL's) headline a talented defense. This team should take a step forward in year two of the Chris Hatcher regime.
5. The Citadel - Exciting All-America wideout Andre Roberts (1,060 yards, 10 TDs) is back; the defense has some retooling to do and must replace All-SoCon members Joshua Lawson, Trevar Broughton and Andrew Rowell.
6. Wofford - Senior laden Terriers missed out on national championship last season, now it's back to rebuilding; veteran linebacker Seth Goldwire (108 tackles) and tackle Derek Wooten are among the best at their position in the conference.
7. UT Chattanooga - The 'Mocs will look to improve on their disappointing 2-9 record from last year; the loss of defensive back Chris Camacho leaves big hole in secondary. Return specialist Jordan Hazard is a big play waiting to happen.
8. Western Carolina - The only bright spot on offense, wide receiver Eddie Cohen is gone; the defense is headlined by All-SoCon linebacker Quinton Phillips (127 tackles, 7.5 TFL's). Phillips will have to be a playmaker all season long.
9. Samford - This will be the program's first season in the Southern Conference. A lack of experience, depth and overall talent will keep them near the bottom for a few years; a few OVC All-Newcomer Team members from last year headline the 2008 roster

Hey T-Bob, How is the kid from Navy working out for you guys. I haven't heard anything about him since he left us. Is he going through spring practice? He is a great kid who will do a bang up job for you guys. We are going to miss him.

Well I have not done the research I try to do prior to AGS Poll time, but my initial reaction is Furman will have to be much better on defense in 2008 to be number two. Elon will have to do the same to be number three. I am not convinced , but could be wrong that GaSU will not be close to the same ball club without Foster. I do think Hatcher is a coach that can bring them back but the main difference in GSU being 8-3 in 05, 3-8 in 06 and 7-4 in 07 was that Foster didn't touch the ball in '06.
We will see.

I AGREE AND WITH WOFFORD HAVING A KID WHO LEFT CANOE U UNDER QUESTIONABLE CIRCUMSTANCES AND IS A BLEEDING GASH FOR QUITTING ON HIS CLASSMATES. WE WON'T BE ABLE TO COMPETE.
ELON AND FURMAN ARE BOTH WAY HIGH IN JOSH'S POLL.

Furman and GSU should both be below Wofford imo. I am just glad App does not have to go to Wofford this year. I wouldn't expect anyone to win the Socon outwright I guess anyone's guess is as good as another as to who will finish where in this conference. (except of course for the bottom 3)

H.V. means Honor Violation and you my brother in arms are an idiot. Getting on a mesage board with crap like that and smearing a good kid is beyond reproach and definitely conduct unbecoming.
FYI , the young man left in good standing. Yes, he did not have what it takes to become a Naval/MC Officer but there are many that fall into that category. Kids enroll into any of our fine Military institutions only to find out that football is not the reason they are there.
If you have proof of your comments Citidog then make them know. If not, and you were just experiencing diarrhea of the mouth, admit it. At least the kid qualified to attend a real Military Acad. and not a knock off. Carry On.

I'd say The Citadel is my pick for second in the conference. Bartman has a great arm and appears to be a strong team leader. Higgins may be the best coach in the Socon. That said, it won't be enough as the Apps win the SoCon title while going 8-0 in conference. Talent level on the '08 team should be the best yet. GSU on the road scares me at this point and I think that will be the teams biggest challenge inside the conference. It is always tough to win in Statesboro, but Foster's departure should make it more managable this time around.

Furman '07 and Furman '08 will be two entirely different monsters. I HOPE for a second place finish or better, but there isn't much to evaluate right now. Different offense, different defense, and a lot of different guys running it. Is the talent there for such a high finish? In my biased opinion, absolutely. I would especially put our offensive personnel up against anyone in the conference. But we'll have to see how things shake out.

Furman will be a "wild card" team this year (like we will be)...obviously they had some problems this past season and they are losing some key players. They could be good or they could be bad next year. I don't think they will be second in the conference, though.

Way too early for predictions though. Players and coaches will be added and subtracted between now and then.

I am sure he knows that we expect to be better than 6-5.xnodx and at some point in time continuing that way will not be acceptable.
Defense is interesting. we have not had a good one sense '04. So changes were needed and I suppose time will tell if they are the correct ones.
Offense, it seems as if we are going to PASS. Even in the Martin days we were probably about 2/3 to 3/4 run. Seems like that may change significantly. Personally, I think this is a good adjustment to the talent we have. We have many excellent receivers in the line up from WR to TEs. We also will have an experienced line (possibly a couple of all conference guys) to block for a guy who can throw the ball.
I haven't been worred much about the offense in past years or this coming year. But the defense has to get better.

Depth is a problem, but we've been recruiting well, and have guys who can step in. LBs are very quick and mobile. Our backfield may be even faster than last year. WC can't realistically expect a 1st or 2nd ranking, but we should at least have a little residual respect. C'est La Vie

In 6 years under Lamb, Furman hasn't had a losing season, made the playoffs four times, defeated Georgia Southern 3 times (to compare, we beat GSU 3 times during Johnson's entire HC career at Furman), Wofford 4 times, Citadel 5 times, etc. That's a better resume than every other coach in the conference not named Moore. In fact, if you take away Furman's '01 National Championship appearance, Lamb's and Johnson's resumes are very similar in terms of record, and that was good enough to get Johnson hired at an SEC school.
App State is Lamb's only real black mark, winning just once in six years. You could also factor in his tendency to let his temper get to him or the fact that Furman likely should have gotten a National Title out of '04 or '05 but came up short.
I still think that Bobby is still a couple of bad years away from an actual hot seat.

Plus he's a Furman "lifer," having played, assisted and ran the program. He's been successful on the field and off, his players tend to be good kids, graduate and win, and he's one of your own. You don't run guys like that off unless your name is Sam Baker.

I think LarryBoy is right on. It's understandable that APP fans think BL should be on the hot seat and I'm sure it would be easy to find Furman fans that will bitch and moan about BL not winning the big game.
I also think it would take a major debacle for BL to be on the hot seat. And to put water on the flames by some of our GSU brothers BL knows football and he is very competitive and Furman will be very competitive in 08. Moore now gets credit for riding the new wave and now has three rings to show for it. I think BL is doing the same thing riding the new wave in his style. No huddle offense, mixing power and a vertical game.
All we've heard in this off-season is that Furman won't make adjustments and Furman can't play old-school option football and win. Well he's making adjustments big adjustments, kudos to him.

I will throw my two cents in. My previous post was not meant to say that he is on the hot seat. But I do think mediocre seasons will not pass muster for Furman football. With that said, Lamb is competitive. The changes he is making is because he thinks it will improve football not because he thinks his job is in jeopardy. xnodx

I have to agree with VMIjrdog regarding Lawson. If he did not get hurt, I'm not sure we would have won. On his final drive before injury, he started running the option and it seemed like they were gaining 5-10 yards a play.

Actually, I think the two schools with higher grad rates for football players than Furman were Davidson and some parachoical school. Needless to say we'd wipe the floor with both.
Furman will be better in 2008. I really really really don't see GSU being a better team losing their whole O-line, their best player, and their running back. I see the Eagles like in 2006 where they will only go as far as their defense takes them.
Again, people keep trying to sound the bell of Furman doom, but geeze people, we've been at this a while. You'd be hard pressed to find a team that has been consistently good for this long a time. GSU can't claim it, Wofford can't, App can't. This is going on 30 years we've been playing playoff calibre football. It isn't as if all the sudden the whole game past us by one day.
The Paladins will be there in the dogfight at the end. Just like they usually are. We have a very tough schedule, but our guys are battle tested, have won big games in tough spots. Ended the season playing as well as anyone in the country.

Oh how I loathed Ingel Martin. He ruined too many of my Saturdays.

That is factually wrong. The Citadel is a state-supported military university which also has a civilian student population and programs. My point is the last time Furman had a losing record was 1994. Before that? 1979.
I really was looking at much longer time period. FU has been playing winning football since before most of the teams in the SoCon even had programs.

I agree Furman has had a solid football program for a long time, but to state that ASU and GSU can't claim they haven't been the program Furman has just isn't factual. Furman will be a solid program in the future, but they may never be the program they were in the 1980's when they had 6 9+ win seasons.

I agree to an extent. You certainly can't argue with the 9 National Championships between GSU and ASU, compared to Furman's 1. Georgia Southern's long-term success (to a greater extent than App State) is perhaps unparalleled in the short history of their program.
But one thing to remember: in the 80s, yes, Furman had 6 9+ win seasons. In the last 9 years, Furman has had 5 9+ win seasons. Not a huge difference. I would like to say that "The Paladin will rise again," but, in the context of the success of the entire program, I'm not sure it ever really fell.

I think we are going to be better than people think. There's a few key differences between us this year and 2006. For one thing, the people that are currently running our offense are worlds more competent than the people that were running it in '06. Second, we should have a receiver corps made up of receivers rather than converted runningbacks. That should make a difference in the problems with catching that we have had in the past two seasons. Third, our players have a decent amount of experience with Hatchers offense, even if it was a "Fosterized" version of it.
The O-line should not be too much of a limiting factor, though it will probably make it very hard for us to move the ball against Georgia.

I suppose it's worth noting that Furman and App have both been to 3 national championships. Considering we are the only private school (and foreseeably the only still with a reasonable shot) is something to hang your hat on.

I am not anointing Elon as a legitimate national championship contender but I will probably have them as a preseason top 10. I am saying that it is possible. I would also say that I think Elon has a better shot at a NC than Furman based on proven players in a system they have returning this year.
I don't know how I forgot to include Richmond in this was well. I would say they are a potential top 5 team and are most definitely a NC contender. Seeing as how they were a semifinalist in 07. (As far as I know they are a private university, if not please disregard)
I am fully aware of Furman's exceptional accomplishments on the football field and their consistent level of play over many years, but claiming they are the only private school that will realistically compete for a NC is a bit naive. It is a little like saying Furman is the only school to maintain a certain level of success over a long period of time...

First off, you're right. There are a few other schools that can be called contenders. Furman is still one of only three private schools to make the title game and the only one to win it. I still can't give you Elon. We beat them last year and they don't play defense.
You can take my comment about the level of success as far out of context as you would like. Again, my point is that people like to trumpet the demise of Furman football (be that through Bobby Lamb, or slow offense, or whatever) the past two seasons. People give Georgia Southern the benefit of the doubt because they are GSU and seem to say Furman is washed up.
I'm merely here stating that there are precious few football programs that have sustained the level of success that Furman has had for as long as they have had it. If you want to interpret that as somehow slamming everyother program, well, that's your red wagon.

I can't comment on what happened at the GSU/App game, but I can comment on the GSU fans chanting "GSU, GSU, GSU" during the NATIONAL ANTHEM at the Wofford/GSU game this past fall because I was there. It's one thing to cheer against an opponent, but to cheer over top of the National Anthem is disrespectful on many levels. It wasn't just a few fans either. I was enough to be clearly audible from the other side of the stadium. Pathetic...

Y'all are sounding like a bunch of whiners who get their feelings hurt. It's rivalry football. Stuff happens.
If you get upset because GSU played their fightsong at the ASU fans at Kidd Brewer (where the Eagle fans were probably outnumbered 10 to 1) you clearly have not been to Paulson.
These kinda things just make it that much sweeter when you win.

I was too busy waiting in the concession trailer line at App State in '07 to know if they were booing our band our not. Besides the App students tearing down their own goalpost during the regular season after beating GSU one year (and then ramming them through our bus windows), the only real poor display I've seen from App fans was after they beat UNI in Chatty. In particular, I remember the students running over to the UNI fans and giving us all the finger (my seat was on the UNI side that year). There was this one @sshole wearing a pink rabbit suit who was especially crude. Other than that they were pretty good when they came down to Paulson in 2006, not sure if it was because the game went into double overtime or what.

Thanks for reminding me! I have been wondering why I don't remember the whole booing thing, and now you've jogged my memory. I spent halftime, and about three minutes into the second half, split between waiting in lines at the "restroom" and the concession trailer. Unfortunately that is life when it comes to college football. If you think your school doesn't have the knuckleheads, then you live under a rock. None of this makes it right, but we are all guilty by association.
The problem with all this is the more fans you have, the more evident this behavior is. 10% of anyones fans are bad. If GS has 20k at a game, 2k will be idiots. If Wofford has 5k at a game 500 will be idiots.

I was running along side of everyone when we tore down the goal post at that game my freshman year, and it was definitely not on purpose when the goal post went through the bus. In fact it might be the only time I've ever heard 2k screaming people go "ohhh nooo" and then silent at one time. It was kind of like in the Christmas Story where Ralphy drops the f-bomb in slow motion. I think it even got caught on the door of the bus after they got it out of the window, causing more damage.
That had to have been one of the angriest bus rides home ever for that team and coaching staff.
I have been a reader on here for a long time, and I can't really think of any other schools having stories like these at all. Either everyone else (other FCS schools) must take football way too lightly, or we (SoCon members) are all just a bunch of over-zealous football rednecks with a blood alcohol percentage that is a direct negative correlation to our relative GPA's. Whichever may be the case, I can't wait for the season to begin.

App actually loaned them one of our buses. I think the Watuaga Rescue ambulance was damaged as well if I'm not mistaken. After that game they started taking down the goal posts early and then sent security out to guard them after a big win. That has since stopped thank God. It was so stupid. You are right, GSU and ASU are the worst. The reason for that is that 95% of your rude fans are going to be students, and I would be willing to bet that both GSU and ASU by themselves (if you exclude the other) have a higher average student homegame attendance than the rest of the conference combined. The same would most likely apply to traveling students, also. Granted the GSU experience is probably the worse of the two, but that is because the students sit behind the opposing teams bench and next to the opposing team's fans (when the stadium was built in the '80s, our enrollment was about a third of what it is now).
And I promise you that this kind of crap is much worse in a football game between two big FBS schools. Tell me a bad story about going to Boone or Statesboro for a football game, and I will show you someone who has several stories from say, a Georgia-Florida or Alabama-Auburn game that are much worse.

So many things go into how many fans a school can draw. Size of student body, number of alums, population of the surrounding area, on field results, tradition, and many other things are all variable.
Wofford doesn't draw as many as GSU, ASU, Furman or El Cid, but considering we are close to larger schools (South Carolina and Clemson) and have so few alums, I think we do pretty well.
If we have 13,000 living alums and 8,500 in attendence, that's pretty good. How many living alums does GSU and ASU have relative to their attendence? I bet Wofford has a higher ratio.

Eyes, I'm going out on a limb here, but I'll bet the pay check that Wofford has a larger attendance based on living alumni (8,500 +/- vs 16,000, that's a 1 to 2 ratio, i.e., 1 fan in the seat to 2 living alumni) than any other college/university in the SoCon. I'm guessing Appy and GSU would have to have greater than 50,000 average to beat us. FU and The Citadel, probably 20/25,000. Elon, maybe 30,000. Western and Chatty aren't even in the running until they get their programs back to respectability. I understand Samford doesn't even draw a decent baseball size crowd.

You gave us double the numbers. We have about 20,000 living alumni. GSU has the best average attendance, but we fall right behind them and have been in the top 20 nationally for the last several years. We had even bigger attendance averages in the late 80's and early 90's.

They weren't very badly behaved on the road (at least not at El Cid) but in Huntington they were positively atrocious. Maybe when they traveled to away games the really nasty fans couldn't read maps or something so they stayed in Huntington. I don't know.
They throw things, they spit, they cut the headset wires from the press box and are just generally obnoxious.

I think we do pretty well in attendance considering the trouble we have had since Taaffe left.

I have heard a lot of bad things about Marshall's fans but I haven't noticed it. What makes them so bad?
They have student section behind the visitor's sideline on the end closest to the fieldhouse. Going to and from the field is like running the gauntlet. A hint for if your team ever plays there...have a good looking female manager go out to the most popular night spot in town on Friday night and participate in the "make your own bikini" contest and the fans will ease up on your guys just a little bit. xsmiley_wix

Imagine if the Cameron Crazies were all a bunch of West Virginia hicks and that's Marshall fans.
I can confirm this postxnodx

Nah, I'll say that GSU fans are as bad as Marsha fans when I see a little girl flick me off and say **** Furman while sitting on her hick paw's lap. As a teen, I traveled to most FU away games, and lordy! Marsha fans threw D cell batteries at the players, and beer bottles at the fans. Marsha is the WORST! (I am waiting for the day when our two fine institutions schedule a game, and the Paladin Nation shows up in Hickington, WV for some sweet revenge!)

Amen to that! FU has a few more butts in seats than Wofford, but 15,000 for a great game can't hold a candle to The Citadel's 21,000 for Webber International School of Grills for the Blind, Deaf, and Autistic!
Even I will admit that Webber is a game we should not play. I would rather beat Furman twice in the same year then play Webber.

There would be no reason to take pride in what has been ascribed to Marshall fans, i.e. throwing batteries, spitting on people, etc. We don't do that; heck, our fans don't even go on the field before time has expired or run goal posts into the opposing team's bus xsmiley_wix

He was at least 7 yards past the sideline and he had already gotten rid of the hat and stomped around for a while. No doubt that was the call after the wierd backing into the endzone touchback call. Totally changed the face of the game. 14-7 App lead at halftime (should have been a 10-7 FU lead) and all the momentum shifted as Furman took over the ball at their own goal line.

App received the ball to start the second half and took a 21-7 lead. They then kicked off and that is when that endzone touchback call happened. I thought it was a bad call at first but apparently the NCAA rule shows that the call was correct. I thought if momentum took you into the endzone it was a touchback but the rule states that on kickoffs it is where the ball is first touched and not momentum so the call was right... The FG block at the end of the first half did change the complection of the game though...

BL lets his emotions out on the field at times. I don't mind it.
Furman has a history of intense coaches that have had some fiery explosions on the field. Dick Sheridan was a tough SOB, and tell me when you ever saw Bobby Johnson smile on the sidelines during a game.
I could be smokin the Furman crack but this team (08) looks very different and I think it will be more representative of the style and attitude that BL has wanted on the field. Will it mean a SoCon championship?
Getting back to SoCon predicts for 2008. I think BL has package recruited for this season. BL has known that Sorrells will be handed the reigns in 2008. It doesn't matter if Sorrells is the #1-#4 QB in the SoCon. The keys are what he has to work with. BL has recruited a combination of size and speed 6-5, 6-4, 6-4 at tightend, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, 5-11, 5-9 at receiver. The oline has eight players with starting experience and they are probably one of the most agile groups of linemen in years. Furman will miss Felton but Furman appears to be moving to a no huddle one back offense featuring two tightends. This will give Furman's speeder runningbacks the opportunities to run and catch. Brown, LaFrance, Kendall, and freshman head-turner Baker look very solid. On paper this looks like a potentially a very solid Furman offense.

I believe Davidson refuses to offer scholarships to play football there. Further, that will not change. With only 1,200 students (+/-), fielding a football team is always a challenge. Unlike Wofford, Davidson does not have a famous football player footing the bills for the program. Plus, the academic standards DC requires to be considered for acceptance are pretty high.
My point is that Davidson is not going to play SoCon football any time soon. And, no one can make them. If the SoCon told them play football, or leave, they would probably leave.
All of us other SoCon schools are just going to have to accept the fact that DC will kick our butt in basketball and we cannot extract revenge on the gridiron.
And, by the way, did anyone else think that Wisconsin looked like they were moving around in molasses? That was the slowest team I believe I have ever seen! If DC beats Kansas (a tall order) they might just win the whole bag of marbles!

I would assume that you are referring to Jerry Richardson, but since he's not nearly our only large financial supporter, you are clearly off base. Wofford has been playing football far longer than ASU has even existed, so one big donor does not a program make. As for resources, Wofford has FAR LESS money than Davidson does so that really isn't a viable excuse. It all boils down to the fact that Davidson would rather excel in one thing that make an effort in all things. They were kicked out of the SoCon once for their lack of participation and I long for they day they are shown the door for good. I don't care what it does to the RPI or exposure of the league, but all three non-football members should be removed immediately.

In essence, the non-basketball schools (Davidson, UNCG, and CofC) were brought in to boost up the basketball conference much like the Big East with teams like Georgetown and Marquette. Only problem is that Davidson is the only one living up to the agreement. CofC was decent for a brief stint and UNCG has been mediocre at best. I am just waiting for the day that there is a major shift in the conference.

And, by the way, did anyone else think that Wisconsin looked like they were moving around in molasses? That was the slowest team I believe I have ever seen! If DC beats Kansas (a tall order) they might just win the whole bag of marbles!
I thought Davidson was fully endowed, i.e: every student is on scholarship.

Dream On!!!! I keep hearing the same thing in Greenville. Wait till next year, Bobby has the team this year. So on and so on... App St. is on top right now so give the Mountaineers the due that they have EARNED.... If FU ever has the team to compete Bobby will screw it up when they play the Mountaineers. Look at what he has done since the turn of the century. Mainly the game they call "Miracle On The MOUNTAIN"...:D xthumbsupx :D xthumbsupx xsmiley_wix
Point is, App State will not continue to win national championships forever. Heck, they lost two conference games in 2007 (and Wofford nearly dropped 50 on App). Who's to say they won't lose more in 2008?
I mean, there's a lot of hatred for Lamb. I think he's a good coach who has given his adult life to our university. He wins football games and graduates his players. The players are sharp in the classroom and good people to boot.
Since the turn of the century Furman has been in the playoffs Furman has appeared in a national championship game, the semi-finals, the quarterfinals, and made the playoffs all but two years when (and they still had winning records in those years). What could possibly be your point?
Nobody has said Bobby has "the" team in 2008. We could have a very good offense led by what might amount to one of the best offensive lines in the FCS (finished ninth in sacks allowed and returns all but one player). The defense is a questionmark. If that comes together could Furman be good enough to win the conference? Sure. Will they? who knows.

So now 42 points is almost 50 and you're taking the over on ASU losing 2 SoCon games in 2008. I need some of that action.

We all kid Lamb about his temper tantrums and some interesting play-calls, but the fact remains, he is a winner. The games with Georgia Southern have been tough. His teams are always well-prepared and play hard. I don't like how he allows his players to conduct themselves but I can't argue about the results on the field and in the classroom.

No doubt. The game against GSU was a perfect example of how good a coach Lamb can be when he's on. I respect Chris Hatcher a lot as a coach and a person, but he got completely outcoached in that game.

Yes, 42 is almost 50. Point is Wofford ran up, over, and around your defense in a way they haven't been thumped in years.
I'm not taking the over on ASU losing more than two. But it certainly is reasonable they could, isn't it?

Definatley possible, especially in the Socon. I think most people realize that but it would be seen as a surprise because they don't expect it.

Wow xeekx I didn't know Wofford has fielded a football team for over 109 years!!! xconfusedx :o

Wofford and Furman knocked heads for the first time in 1896. Couple old geezers on the block. Furman and the Citadel have been playing Southern Conference football for, what, nearly 90 years?

Actually it was 1889 and it was the first intercollegiate football game played in South Carolina. Best of all, Wofford won.

You gotta be kidding! The only reason you won was a missed field goal. We dominated the first half, you guys dominated the second, but to say we got outcoached is ignorant.

You must have been watching another game. GSU won the first half, but FU played better the rest of the game and but for a phantom pass interference call and a fumble that was never called GSU wouldn't have had a shot at that field goal. In fact, they should have lost by two touchdowns.

Didnt I say GSU won the first half and Furman the second half? Shoulda Woulda Coulda my man. What the hell does what you just said have to do with coaching? You said GSU was out coached. I was at the game and we got outplayed in the 2nd half but still could have won the game with a chip shot field goal. We missed and you won. This wasnt being out coached rather lack of execution on our part. We got out played when it mattered not out coached.

Media Pre-season poll has Samford as the #2 pick behind Western Carolina. Then the rest as follows:
3) App State
4) Wofford
5) Citadel
6) Furman
7) Georgia Southern
8) Chatt

I think most of the SoCon will be suprised at WCU's turnaround in 2008 and I think Samford will be more competitive than most think.
I think everyone else with the exception of App is a wildcard. Chatt could fall like WCU did last year or they might actually have a decent season.

Anybody have a feel for Elon's defense this year. A quick look at last year's roster says they have almost everybody coming back. The question is does that improve the defense. If it does, keep your eye on themxnodx

I am sure that their defense will be improved. That being said, they will do well against the more traditional offenses, but unless they change their scheme a little bit, they won't be much better against the spread.

Furman runs about as "traditional" offense as any team in the league and they couldn't stop us to save their lives. If Riddle and Hudgins play up to par, though, they wont need a defense but only occassionally. :)

That was my thought. Last year was far from a stellar years defensively for any team. Seems like a mild improvement in the defense for Elon could set them up for one heck of a year.
