Apparently, one has to get in line to dump on this kind of thread.
How silly of me to think there are any well-reasoned, intelligent
football fans out there who would like a few stats to look at during
the long off-season. It must be so very tedious to all of you
having to respond to every thread you find uninteresting and being
compelled to vent your negative bile.

I aim myself toward factual information and ANYthing pertinent
to the happenings of college football, great sport that it is.
It has been a past pleasure to take part of some of the best football
conversation going on the Internet, and am grateful for much of
the valuable information I have found.

Call me thin-skinned I guess, but I don't care for your negative
garbage anymore. I am through visiting this site if this is the
best you guys can do. Seems to be the domain of over-zealous
fans and single-minded patrons anyway. Tell THEM to get a life.

Put your computers to some quality use and look up some of the
bigger words you don't understand. And those who are entrusted
with a vote in the forthcoming elections and like the immature smack,
well I fear for our future, assuming you know how to read a ballot.

Lotsa luck to the remaining courteous and serious AGS members.

buh-byeKeeper, you know I enjoy ALL your contributions. Some folks are still getting used to the fact that on AGS you don't personally insult other members, you don't smack on the Discussion board, and the Discussion board is for reasoned discussion.

I'm sure skinny_uncle didn't mean any harm but the smack and personal jab were out of line and not what you can regularly expect here, on this board at least. Just report it (click the red x) and ignore it. Most of all stick around. The Great West is next right? xpeacex

As far as this thread goes, UNI stands out as needing quite a few new guys to step up this year. Some good QBs are also gone from the Gateway this year, with five starters departing.

As an user of statistics, it's fun to see some one try to get useful information out there. xbowx xbowx

Help me understand these figures....

I'll use SDSU, as I am most familiar with them.

In rushing last year Jacks averaged 165.8 yards per game. Of those 165.8 yards, 119.4 yards were carried by departing seniors, so only 46.4 yards are returning.
In passing, Jacks averaged 196 yards per game, and Jacks lost sparingly used back-up qb, who averaged 2.4 yards passing per game. And of the 196 yards receiving, 68 yards went to wide receivers who's eligibility is done.

Are there 5 equivalents total for the offensive line? This is the number of offensive plays per game divided by the people on the line (tackles, guards, centers), so if an offensive player played every offensive play of every game, that equals 1? If this is the case, UNI is bringing back virtually no offensive line.

And using a round number of tackles for the season as 1000, 400 tackles by SDSU defense were by seniors who graduated (used up eligibility)?

Addressing these questions will assist me in better understanding what you've provided.

Thanks!

Keeper, come on man, you shouldn't even feel like you need to defend the numbers because you aren't trying to predict future success you are simply providing a tool that shows how big of a hole different teams will need to fill. You should go and click on the user cp button in the upper left corner and I think you will see that you have gotten positive feedback from me at the very least for a few of these that I have seen now. I am particularly interested in seeing the GWFC for next week as I doubt there will be much drop for Cal Poly and I also want to see what kind of hill the Aggies will need to climb next year. It's interesting, I like it, keep on keeperin' on.

Cool little tool there. But as with all statistics, a context must be accounted for as well.

On the surface, just looking at the numbers, Missouri St. and WIU seem like the big winners by not losing as much as the other teams. Ind St. still looks to be bad, and the others lose something, but not everything (e.g., UNI loses a QB and the entire O-Line, but skill positions - RB and WR - are intact).

So what to make of it? First, some teams had good seasons, so losses look proportionately bad. This does not take into account talent waiting in the wings. Second, bad teams look horrible as well, so any losses look huge. The reality is losing some dead weight might do these teams some good.

In the end, every team has reasons to be optimists. UNI will argue that their recruits will slide in a pick up where the graduating players left off. Indiana St. can have perpetual hope to rise from the bottom. Hell, it can't get much worse, right? And NDSU and SDSU can play for the playoffs - HOORAY!!! :D

The real question that these stats leave me with is this -- Will WIU or MSU find a way to climb to the top? On paper, it seems they might have more senior leadership and experience. But do they have the skill, the desire, the crowd support, the schedule, etc. In other words, this table tells you nothing about the intangibles. My best guess is that NDSU and SDSU will provide the Gateway with an even more challenging slate of games, and these teams will once again remain somewhere in the middle. For their fans sake, I hope I am wrong, and as I said earlier, every team at this point in the year has reasons to feel they will have a strong year in the fall. Good luck to you all!!

The stats look like it, but keep in mind WIU returns a whole lot of nothing. Their QB was horrible. Their running game was good, but stopable.

I don't think NDSU is losing any Running backs, and they did lose a SR QB. The rushing yards per game should be around 234, and passing yards per game should be around 40.

Not sure how you're reading this, but NDSU returns their top 6 receivers from last season, so the 5.5 yards per game lost is very believable. The SR-WR number is how many yards are graduating, not returning.

I must be reading it wrong. My thought was the 5.5 was the yardage returning. The #3 reciever in the rotation is not returning, he was out the last few games last year too.
