Jets | Team trades Vilma to New Orleans

Updating a previous item, Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the New York Jets have agreed in principle to trade LB Jonathan Vilma to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a conditional draft pick based on Vilma's playing time.

Foster signed a 2 year deal with the Niners. If they can pick up a solid D-lineman I'll be satisfied, I think they can get everything else through the draft.

New York Jets have agreed in principle to trade LB Jonathan Vilma to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a conditional draft pick based on Vilma's playing time.

No one knows what the possibilities for this pick will be yet. Hopefully word leaks out soon because this Jets fan really wants to know. The only thing I know right now is it's going to depend on playing time and Vilma's performance in 2008.

I'm really sad to see Vilma go. He was my favorite defensive player. I'll be the first to admit that he wasn't a good fit in the 3-4 defense, but I often wondered why Mangini was so stubborn and never just went with the 4-3 since all the personnel were already in place. The Saints are getting one heck of a player if he stays healthy.

The Jets are certainly cleaning house though. DeWayne Robertson will also likely be on the move this offseason. And if he doesn't wind up on a new team he'll be playing DE in the 3-4 now that the Jets just made this move:

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the New York Jets will acquire Carolina Panthers DT Kris Jenkins in exchange for a third- and fifth-round draft pick.

That's an excellent pickup! xthumbsupx

Jets also are already in touch with Faneca's agent as are the Rams and 49ers. I'm not quite sold on Faneca for this team, but hell he would be a tremendous (can't stress tremendous enough) upgrade over the poop we were playing at LG last season.

I'd be surprised if the Giants trade away Shockey. They made all kinds of noise during and after the postseason about keeping him on board and what a great player he's been for them.

I haven't seen much in terms of G-men interest in free agents, mostly trying to resign their guys and some mid-level FAs. FS Gibril Wilson is our biggest potential FA name, and since we can't seem to get a contract with him, the Raiders, Eagles, Jags and Broncos are all supposedly interested.

The Giants have also expressed interest in engineering trades for DeAngelo Hall or Marcus Trufant

He signed with Buffalo? That's too bad, for us

He's a nice player, tough and physical. BBI considers him not as quick or athletic as you'd want in a weakside linebacker. He'll be a nice addition for the Bills' D, certainly, and I gotta think they'll put him in spots to succeed.

I guess we're in the market for a LB now...

Rumor regarding my Iggles.....if they can sign Asante Samuel (he is visiting with them today as I type this), then they'll trade CB Lito Shepard to Arizona along with a pick for Larry Fitzgerald. I don't see that happening though. But it sure would be nice!

Also, I'm fairly certain they'll sign LB/DE Chris Clemons from Oakland to be a pass rushing specialist, I think he had 8 sacks last season. They need someone on the other side of the D line to compliment Trent Cole to rush the QB.

In Free Agency, just about every player gets overpaid. Even marginal ones. We see it in MLB, NFL, NBA, and I'm assuming the NHL (not totally sure about the NHL as I'm not a fan).

Vilma to Saints for 4th rounder

Well it's a 4th rounder that could be a 3rd rounder depending on performance. Blah. I was really hoping the Jets could do a little better and have it be a 3rd rounder that could turn into a 2nd rounder. Ah well. I guess there is little value in the NFL for LB's coming off of a major knee injury.

This really is a great deal for the Saints.

You know you've gone too far in fantasy football when you become more worried about your "fake" RB's performance instead of worrying about your favorite team's real D.

This really is a great deal for the Saints.

Vilma is a solid upgrade at linebacker for the Saints, who have been looking for a MLB ever since Sam Mills left for Carolina. If he plays like he did before the Jets went to the 3-4, the Saints will be a solid force in the NFC.

That's the big mystery in all of this. I really hope he does since he's one of my favorite players but the guy just jogged for the first time since his surgery this week.

Also it appears the originally reports compensation for Vilma was incorrect. The real deal is the Saints 3rd or 4th pick in 2008, plus a conditional 2nd or 3rd pick in 2009 (depending on playing time & whether Vilma signs a long term deal with NO).

Also interesting is that if the Jets get the Saints 2nd rounder in 2009 the Jet will ship back one of their 4th round picks (They have their own and the Redskins) back to the Saints.

Complicated enough? :-)

Interesting. If they get Javon then to me it's a sign that they are clearly interested in going after McFadden. If they stay where they are in the draft now they are in perfect position to get a good WR

They have to look at making a move for McFadden. But the key is the health of Walker.

The Chicago Bears let WR Bernard Berrian go to Minnesota 6 year contract, but THE ABSOLUTE SHOCKER...Bears re-sign LB Lance Briggs 6 yrs 36 mil...Briggs was insulted at a 7.4 mil offer, so Im gonna bet a LARGE chunk of this 36 mil is up front signing bonus, like 10 mil of it is my guess...Briggs is the fifth veteran player to agree to a new contract with the Bears since Feb. 18, following defensive end Alex Brown, quarterbacks Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton, and tight end Desmond Clark.
