The South Dakota State Women's Basketball team hold a three game lead with 2 games remaining for their first SUMMIT LEAGUE title. At 11-2, (20-6) the Jacks are in first, with Western IL second at 8-5. With two games at SDSU's Frost Arena (where Jacks are on a 19 game winning streak xbowx xbowx ), the last year of transition has them ineligible for the NCAA's tourney, but locked in as the WNIT entry from the Summit League.

This will be the second year for the Lady Jacks in the WNIT. Last year, they won vs. IL St Redbirds, and Indiana U at Brookings, before capacity crowds, before falling to WNIT champions, Wyoming at Laramie.

There is high anticipation in Rabbit Land that SDSU will again host a couple of rounds (or more) in the WNIT.

Here's the fine write-up by Terry V., SDSU columnist for the Sioux Falls, SD Argus-Leader.

Some great lines from the article:

"If the Jacks can beat Centenary and Oral Roberts this week, and they're riding a 20-game home win streak, they will be only the second team to finish with more than 15 conference victories in the Summit League's 16-year history." [author's note: Pretty good for the 1st year in conference, and not finished with D-II to D-I transition yet]

"One of the most gratifying things is we've been able to do it with quality student-athletes in the classroom and we've done it with the same recruiting region we've always had," SDSU athletic director Fred Oien said, "which were two major arguments five years ago why we shouldn't go Division I." [author's note: Top in the classroom, as well as the court, all upper Midwest talent, including over 1/2 from South Dakota or 150 mile radius of Brookings]

Just to provide some more information about the SDSU Women's BB program. They have finished the past two seasons with the Number 1 overall GPA for all WBB teams in D-1. They have never finished worse than 2nd since transitioning to D-1.

As far as playing on the court, here are the BCS teams SDSU has beaten during the transition - Oregon, Missouri, Southern Cal., Virginia, Kansas, Alabama (3 times), Minnesota, Indiana, Nebraska, Colorado St., Wisconsin, Kentucky, Oklahoma St., Colorado. Most of the victories were played on the road. Some teams, like Nebraska, are refusing to play SDSU anymore. I guess they did not like that 19 point defeat on their home court. Oklahoma St. also took a 28 point thumping from the Jackrabbits.

The Jacks are on a 10 game winning streak, a 19 game home winning streak (3rd longest in D-1) and has not lost a game they have lead going into halftime in 52 games.

Go State!!!
Go Jacks!!!

I don't think NorCalJack will mind if I make a correction: SDSU's women have had the best GPA for all women's college basketball teams AT ALL LEVELS...not just D-1.

Bisonville has been giving grief to Amy (NDSU WBB coach), but beat the last place Centenary Ladies, and you tie for second behind the Jacks. xthumbsupx xthumbsupx xthumbsupx

But graduating most of your starters, and few underclass women played, and having to knock off the Bunnies, McFeely have captured it while watching Bison-Bunnies WBB in Brookings.

This rivalry will remain one-sided for awhile
North Dakota State, by virtue of dominance in the 1980s and ’90s in the glory days of Division II, still holds a 37-29 in the all-time women’s basketball series against South Dakota State. We will make this bold prediction after watching Saturday night’s game between the teams at Frost Arena: The Jackrabbits will tie the series in the 2011-12 season.

For those unable to quickly calculate the numbers, that means SDSU will sweep the two-game season series for the next four years.
