The student fishwrap is reporting that we're set to add women's bowling. I've been plugging the addition of the sport to our fan base for a few months now.
It makes sense to regional foes (i.e the SWAC, La Tech, Arkansas State) and the fact several other schools in the region are likely to add it soon (I believe Tulane is rumored to do so and it'd be great if Central Arkansas did).
It's cheaper -- you do not have to travel more than a few states away as the schools in the region do host tournaments and SHSU could do the same.
National championship. I do not see how SHSU can not be a top 15 program (there's only about 30ish to begin with). SHSU could become an instant presence on the national bowling scene. We already have a strong bowling community in Huntsville and the university will not mind being a national champ!

Because it is an inexpensive way for schools to meet Title IX requirements...

You better believe it...
And it's not like there isn't professional bowling...

It may have something to do with our increased enrollment which includes many more females than males (nice place to visit, FSA!)...
Or perhaps, when it was noted we are adding another sport or two here in the next 5-10 years...a hint that FBS is forthcoming...

I have said this before, and I will repeat - my hunch is that the NCAA will up the number of required sports sponsored to stay D-I.

its 14 sports right now for non fbs members and 16 for fbs. It used to be 14 all the way around. D-II used to be 8 then moved to 10, D-III is also 10

What do you think the number will be?
I've seen a few leagues change their minimum to be members. Wasn't it the Sun Belt recently who said you needed 15 conference sports to be a membeR?

Most likely they will add at least two more, outside chance of four. They want to make sure that teams coming into D-I have as many barriers as possible, and have robust athletic departments.
NAU sponsors 15 sports, and will be adding softball in the near future.
