Because of another thread I located this site where I can easily count the numbers of players drafted from each school:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/history?abbr=O

I checked Ohio State and confirmed a previous count I made. The Buckeyes had 39 players taken during the most recent five NFL drafts.

I had kind of assumed that USC would've had more. But that's not the case. The Trojans had 30 players taken over the same period.

Here's what I got for the five programs to most recently win BCS championships:

Ohio State 39
USC 30
Florida 28
LSU 26
Texas 24

Earlier today I was looking at projections for the 2008 and 2009 drafts at NFLDraftScout.com. Looks like some of the other schools will make up some ground on the Buckeyes this year as the site only projects two players being taken in 2008. But they project 11 Buckeyes being taken in 2009.

I guess there's a reason why Ohio State's been in the BCS title game 3 times in the past 6 years. Question is: Has Tressel under acheived given the talent level he's been able to acquire by only winning one of the 3?

The fact they are in the chipper is not because of their "superior" talent. It's how the system is set up and OSU greatly benefits from that.

...and the fact that the rest of the Big Ten is not that good.

The system is a factor in anybody getting to the BCS championship game. But a talent is also a factor. And you're talking about an average of 8 NFL draft picks a year. Any given team has those players that get drafted in the next draft plus a bunch more that are going to be drafted in subsequent years. A lot of talent goes through that program.

I think there are plusses and minuses to being in a league without a conference title game. The plus is that if you're in good position at the end of the regular season you don't risk it. The minus is that if you're not in good position you can't make it up. LSU would not have made the BCS championship game this past season without a league championship game. I don't know if they'd have made it in 2003 either.
