I know there's a lot of Nascar fans on here. Here's a few youtube clips from past 500's All are from races i remember. Daytona just hasn't been the same the last few years IMO. It was meant to run during the day without 3 hours pre-race crap and what. Nothing like hearing Ken Squier, Chris Economacki and some of the other legendary voices of the sport.

I don't watch NASCAR for the wrecks nor do i watch hockey for the fights. If i want to watch a fight i'll watch MMA, not two guys yanking on each others jerseys throwin heymakers. Those who watch racing for wrecks aren't true racing fans IMO. When i was 10 years old i thought it accidents were cool but now i get annoyed, especially when attending a race live.

Poor Bill Elliott. My dad was/is a huge Bill Elliott fan and that crushed him. If Awesome had any help at all he would have won that race. That was probably his best car at the 500 since 1990.

Gordon and Johnson are legitimate picks, Earnhardt is the poster child for being overrated, and Mears is an experiment to see what happens if you put a nobody in a good car.
Even NASCAR's obvious pro-Hendrick stance can't swing a 1-2-3-4 finish.

Jr is 2 for 2 so far in the 88 car and has a history of strong racing at Daytona. Mears is the longshot here but he has been running well so far down at Daytona this year, if he can stay clean out there his car can finish near the front.

I can't watch rednecks make 400 left turns, and with them having their supposed "Super Bowl" at the beginning of the season makes me not watch that much more - which isn't really possible since I've never watched.

That fact that you think it's rednecks just shows how dumb your comment really is. Know what you're talking about before you speak. Nascar started to lose the redneck mentality 20 years ago.

That may be true about Earnhardt, but his fan base is based off his father's popularity, not his results on the track. Take away his name, and he's no different than many other drivers.
As for Mears, the same could be said about any driver in a quality ride (Hendrick, Gibbs, Penske, Childress, Roush, DEI).
I guess what we're seeing here is that Hendrick/Gibbs is becoming a rivalry of Yankees/Red Sox proportions.

For me, the Daytona and Talladega races are the only ones I make sure to watch. Daytona has provided some real drama over the years, including some of the biggest upsets. Remember Derrike Cope??
I played soccer with his family, real nice folks. Those of you into the
demo derbies might get more out of the Nationwide (formerly Busch) races.
Anyway, always like to see an underdog come through at the checkers.

They have not gotten rid of that mentality and they never will - ask anyone who is not a fan and half the people who are fans and they will agree. Hell I have friends from CCU who are fans and call the fans who watch it rednecks.
Gimme a call when a driver other then Jeff Gordon can enunciate and complete a sentence.

10 years the race would be basically over now it's just starting it's a joke. People are going to be eating dinner and going to church soon on the east coast. I won;t be able to watch the end since i have a bball game at 7:30.

Well anymore the commercials are just rediculous which actually makes it hard to watch for the hardcore guy. But if you truly know what's going on out there it's pretty amazing. Different strokes for different folks. I can't bear to watch soccer but some people love it. However in no means do i think it's a dumb sport.

I will say the racing itself is a lot better then in the past. This type of plate racing reminds me of how it was in the beginning from '88 to about '94. Cars like they today were able to seperate and pass without help. The pack racing really started to get annoying.

Anybody have a chance to utilize the Direct TV Hotpass?? It was shown free of charge today probably as part of a promotion for it. I must say that it was cool listening in on the drivers/crew conversations. If you are the die-hard NASCAR fan (I would only classify myself as casual), it would be a purchase well worth it.
