Never before have both teams been division contenders at the same time. It's always been, when one franchise was up, the other was down. I wouldn't mind seeing an intense rivalry form between these two clubs, just to make things interesting. Not necessarily on the Red Sox-Yankees level, but maybe Cub-Cardinals or Giants-Dodgers.
Mostly, I want to see this because I think there just aren't enough fist fights between New York and Philly fans at the ball park when the Mets are in town!

Depends, as a Mets fan I gotta say my whole life has been spent rooting against the Braves and Yanks. Even after last year I don't really care about the Phils one way or the other. Right now it's probably bigger in Philly, especially since a lot of Mets fans live in NJ and PA and go to games at CBP.

There's plenty of intensity in the stands when the Mutts come to town! Not Flyers-Rangers intense, but it'll get there. It sounds like at least 25% of a Phils-Mutts crowd in Philly cheer for NY. Maybe closer to a third.

Being a new Pennsy expat arrival here in NYC, I went to three Phils games at Shea last year. At one, I saw THE MOST fistfights in the stands of any sporting event I've ever been to in my life. It was like watching a tennis match, seeing the security personnel running to and fro.
I'm proud of the great number of Phils fans who show up at Shea and are LOUD LOUD LOUD. Not so proud of the drunk louts who get some of the rough stuff revved up with the Mets fans. It looked to me as though most of the fights were indeed started by drunk Philly people showing their xazzx . Once I saw a guy in a Phils hat go up to a loud-mouthed Mets fans and knock his Mets cap off his head, triggering mayhem in that section.
Vince McMahon and Gorilla Monsoon could have done the play-by-play on that one.;)
But, yeah, the rivalry is tremendous. Boy, did the Phils have the Mets number last year. And who can forget the last weekend of the season!xhypedx

In my experience, most fights involving Philly sports fans are started by the Philly guys. This is especially true if their team is getting beat badly.
The last time I was at Shea was June of '94. The Phils were in comming off of their pennant season the year before. Meanwhile, the Mets were comming off of a 103 loss season. The place was fairly empty and Mets fans weren't bragging about squat.
Since New Yorkers regularly get their a$$es handed to them by Philly fans, particularly in Philly, they had found another outlet for their rage. In the late 90's, they would go up to any game in Boston (B's, Sox or Celts) and talk ***** to the Boston fans. Naturally, being a bunch of gigantic pu$$ies, none of the Boston fans did *****. Well, that's not completely true. If the Boston guys felt they outnumbered the New Yorkers 10 to 1, then they'd start a fight... because in Boston, that's how they roll biatch! xrolleyesx
A wife of a coworker of mine had a good line about Boston. She lived in Bedford in the late 80's when her husband was stationed at Hanscom. She said, "There are no men in Boston." I loved that line. xnodx

You're right. Islanders may have topped the list in late 70s and early 80s. You could just as well add the Penguins and Capitals and Edmonton soon after that. Now the list would include Buffalo, Toronto and Tampa.
I bet the Flyers are on a lot of teams' most-hated lists, for that matter.xrulesx
