I know lots of people here don't like ESPN, but they are having their "greatest highlight" competition and tonight it's Boise St.'s Statue of Liberty versus MJ's game winner against Utah.

Tough call. I personally think the Boise St. "highlight" shouldn't be just the one play it has to be the last two minutes of the game plus the OTs. When you think of that game tons of images rush back. When you think of MJ at the end of his career you think of that shot over Russell. I don't know which one I'd choose.

Hate to give props to the New York Football Giants, but that Eli-Escapes-Tyree's-Fingertips-Hold-The-Ball miracle completion has to rank right up there.

Even if this were TWO different plays -- Eli escaping and completing a pass a la Randall Cunningham on Monday Night, and then, separately, Tyree holding on to that ball for a first down -- even if they were both in run-of-the-mill regular season game, I think they would occupy two spots on a list of the greatest NFL plays of all time.

That it's the SAME PLAY to keep hope alive in the 4th quarter of a Super Bowl, geez ...

The only problem I am having with the ultimate highlight thus far is that when ESPN is showing them on Sportscenter they are having Berman give the background info AND the play-by-play on the highlights. Most of the highlights are just as memorable from the call the tv/radio announcer made as they were for the actual highlight itself so having Berman do it really detracts from the clip in my opinion.

MJ's game winner against Utah? Is that the one where he looks like he's going to dunk it but pulls it down and lays it up?

If so, I vote for that one over the Boise State play 10 out of 10 times.

I completely agree. Listening the the band is out on the field by Berman is not the same. Good call.

No it is the shot where MJ pushes off Russel and no foul is called. xnonono2x

Anyone remember the high school basketball in bounds play where the kid got on all fours and barked like a dog, while another ran a back door play for a lay up and the last second win? xlolxxlolxxlolxxlolx

That is tough to beat, and is most original IMO.

I don't know why they had the Laettner/Band play go up against each other so early. When i thought of the 4 or 5 best highlights, those two, Flutie's hailmarry, USA goal against Russia and Willie Mays catch came to mind.

I also agree on the Jordan highlight. With all his memorable moments that's the one they picked. His slam dunk during the '88(??) dunk competition is the one i think of.

Last night was immaculate reception versus buckner. The reception won in a landslide. No surprise, everyone from New England probably voted for the reception so that Buckner would not be considered the greatest "highlight"
