Think they can pull it off again?

Better watch out, LSU. Appalachian State is coming to town.
The Mountaineers, who kicked off last year's wacky college football season with a stunning win at Michigan, will get an even tougher assignment next season when they open against the defending national champion Tigers.
Of course, Appalachian State knows plenty about winning national championships. The Mountaineers enter next season as the three-time defending champs in Division I's Football Championship Subdivision.
LSU won the Bowl Championship Series title by beating Ohio State last season. Appalachian State won its record third straight title in what used to be called Division I-AA by beating Delaware.
Appalachian State and LSU were scheduled to play in 2009, but the game was moved up a year to accommodate an opening in the Tigers' schedule. The teams will now not play in 2009.
LSU beat Appalachian State 24-0 during the 2005 season.

I love the fact that they are playing...and I hope I am wrong......but Appy loses by 3 TD's.....but I still love the fact hat they are taking on the "other" national champs and I will pull for them to win

I hope it doesn't negate what App did for FCS football in 2007. If they go to Baton Rouge in a highly anticipated event and get punched in the mouth, we'll go back to being the baby brothers again.

To be fair, I think most teams are still baby brothers, even those who have beat FBS teams.

Seen LSU enough last year that I think ASU has a real solid chance to beat them, especially if they play early in the season.
* Won't be intimidated. See last year at the Big House
* Played enough FCS games to know what to expect.
* Speed kills. But ASU can match it.
* LSU has young QB. They will be reloading in skill positions.
* Armanti is back. He is more dangerous in the beginning of the season before wear and tear gets the best of him late in the season.
* Jerry Moore prepares very well for that One Game.

Probably not. Of course it was "probably not" last year prior to the Michigan game too.
An additional factor is the fact that App State did beat Michigan. LSU players are going to hear a lot about App State's big upset, probably to the point of getting sick of hearing it and getting kind of fired up about putting the "little guys" in their place. I think there's probably going to be a lot more intensity on the BCS league team's part this time than there usually is in such matchup.

Speed kills. But ASU can match it.
Can't prove it and wouldn't be able to unless I could line the players up and have them run against each other...but I doubt it. I doubt that App State will be as fast overall team speed wise as LSU is.
* LSU has young QB. They will be reloading in skill positions.
* Armanti is back.
I think those two things hit on the best things going in App's favor. LSU will go into the 2008 season without a lot of 2007's key players. And a mobile quarterback will help App for obvious reasons.
With the LSU quarterback thing: Perriloux is an extremely talented player. There was a discussion of this before and it was noted that he finished the season with a 175.6 QB rating. He didn't have enough attempts to show in the NCAA ranking but Sam Bradford of Oklahoma led FBS with a 176.5 and Tebow was second at 172.5.
Perriloux's stats have to be viewed in the context of the fact that he only started two games and one of them was Middle Tennessee. However, in the very meaningful setting of the SEC championship game he was 20 of 30 for 243 yards, 1 TD, and 1 Int.

LSU is gonna be tough offensively. Don't forget that last year was Flynn's first year starting, so you can see what they did with an inexperienced QB. Defensively they lose their coordinator so that'll be an adjustment for them.

How soon we forget that in 2005 ASU played LSU. LSU won 24-0, but it was 14-0 going into the 4th Q. Although that game was never really in doubt, I believe that this game will be a little closer than 52-6.

Somebody posted this on a LSU board. I guess some of their fans are taking us seriously.
Appy State is better than 50% of D1-A teams. Here is a list of BCS teams they rank higher than in the sagarin:
Louisville
Michigan State
Maryland
Kansas State
Vanderbilt
Washington
Colorado
Purdue
Georgia Tech
Nebraska
Washington State
NC State
North Carolina
Stanford
Pittsburgh
Indiana
Iowa
Ole Miss
Notre Dame
Iowa State
Syracuse
Minnesota
That is 21 schools that the Sagarin computer rankings have Appalachian state higher than.
Just for kicks: Appalachian State is better than:
5 of the teams in the Big 10
3 of the teams in the Big East
3 of the teams in the Big 12
3 of the teams in the Pac 10
2 of the teams in the SEC
4 of the teams in the ACC
than Notre Dame
There's a reason why they beat Michigan folks. Her e is their Sagarin Rank (the only computer ranking system that includes I-AA and I-A for comparison) the last few years:
2007: 44
2006: 53
My point is, if they were in I-A they would have been better than 1/2 of the teams. They are not the normal case for a I-AA team. They ain't Furman.

The worst part about this is that for all the disrespect there's nothing we can say with any real merit to hope to silence it...
Those fans who think their team's always got a chance will always seem crazy...until you're sitting in Legends and your ears are ringing and you watch that guy that you see in Wellborn sometimes block a kick to preserve the lead.
I mean seriously? What do we say about the people who said "I think App's got a real chance at Michigan" last year? Obviously it's not the same situation...but if our boys do pull it out what will you say about everyone who's saying now that we have a shot?
Just a thought...
My God...September is so far away.

In many ways, App sneaked up on an ill-prepared Michigan team. I can only imagine how many times someone will mention that Les Miles is a Michigan man, App beat Michigan, blah, blah, blah.
We won't sneak up on LSU. We'll have to beat them fair and square. Here's to an opening week that sees FCS wallop BCS!
McNeese folks, any idea where we should stay in Baton Rouge?

Typically you'd want to stay in the South Baton Rouge Area (Bluebonnet Rd., Seigen Lane, Essen Lane, Airline Highway). There's access to the mall and resturants in that area. Also if your driving in from New Orleans you get to this area first. The airport is in North Baton Rouge near Southern, there's a Hilton Garden Inn near the airport and you can get to LSU in about 10 minutes on I-10.
You can research hotels at this site (http://www.1stbatonrougehotels.com/).

Boy, do I disagree that Michigan was ill-prepared. They were most certainly prepared. I heard their coach say on his weekly talk show (before the game) that App was the fastest team he had ever seen. No amount of preparation will help if the other team is simply faster. There was just nothing they could do about it. Mich. lost their 2nd game to Oregon - another fast team.
We did not "sneak up" on Michigan, and we won't be sneaking up on LSU.
Lou Holtz himself said after the Michigan game that "the best team won". Will we be that much faster than LSU too? I sure doubt it. But, it ought to be a great game. ASU's real weakness will be that we simply won't have the depth to last into the 4th quarter with LSU.

And they beat Florida, which probably has more overall team speed than either.
I've seen that thing posted before about Carr saying App was the fastest team he had ever seen before. If he really said that, I think that was a pretty ridiculous statement.
I think that, in the context of the BCS, App would be an average team in terms of overall team speed. I'm talking about when you look at every position. You're talking about a coach who had his seen his team play Florida and Texas once each as well as Southern Cal twice over the previous five seasons. No way App State was the fastest team he'd ever seen.
And, yes, I did watch a replay of the App State/Michigan game and watched App play two other games on TV.
What happened for you guys was wonderful. It was really good for your school and good for FCS as well. But it was an upset. Michigan had a lot more talent than your team did. If somebody took out a stopwatch and clocked every position...interiror linemen, linebackers, etc. included...my bet would be that they'd find Michigan had more overall team speed than your guys did. Michigan did not prepare for your guys with the intensity with which they would've been preparing for another BCS league team. No way.
Remember, at that point, your two previous national championship teams had played three BCS league teams and lost by 13, 24, and 28 points. And the 13 point loss was to a team that finished 3-9. That's not a bad performance for an FCS team. But at that point it wasn't a record that would make Michigan's players and coaches think they needed to seriously fear losing with a team they thought was going to challenge for the Big 10 title.

Considering some of the teams Michigan has played I sincerely doubt that App was the fastest team Carr had ever seen. If he really said that I write it off to coachspeak...trying to make people look at the upcoming opponent as a threat. I doubt App even had the most overall team speed Michigan was going to see that season. I also doubt that Michigan's players and coaches approached preparations with the kind of intensity they'd have had in preparing for a team they really thought had a chance to beat them.
I can pretty much guarantee you that few if any of their players thought going in that there was any way Appalachian State could win the game. They were thinking "rent a win."

I'm not so sure i agree with the people saying LSU is not Michigan. LSU next year is going to be much weaker than they were this year. They weren't even that great last year, still lost 2 games. They will be without Flynn, Doucet, Dorsey, and Stelz to just name a few. Perrelouix is very promising but is still raw as a passer. They don't have a great RB like Michigan had with Hart. The one difference I see is that LSU's defense will be much faster than Michigan's defense was. The home run for App may not be there but they will still be able to work their 5 WR offense.

Early Doucet was hurt most of the season, Flynn was only a one year starter so going into the season there's not much difference between the two QBs. Losing 2 games both in triple overtime with a chance to win at the end, indicates that that was a very good team. LSU may not a back like Hart but they have at least 3 people who can hit for big gains.

And think it will come down to how much LSU has to 'reload'. I think App is pretty set except for DBs, we'll just see how that works out. But I have no clue what kind of team LSU will have at this point.

I'm not sure, why do we get to hear why non-scolly teams should be included in the playoffs every year? Congrats to Jacksonville for stepping up their OOC schedule. Perhaps if Dayton had done the same last year you could have proven your greatness on the field. But they would have had to beat their D-II oponent as well.

Which is all well and good but you asked why are we playing a non-scholly team. Why are you playing a scholly team. I am not knocking Dayton but if you are suggesting that we shouldn't play a non-scholly team then you shouldn't be taking on a scholly program. Congratulations on beating Albany. I don't really want to get into the playoff argument either, its beating a dead horse that has already been decided. I was simply commending Jacksonville on finding a top notch OOC oponent to gage their program against. I think any team not in a major FCS conference with playoff aspirations should make every effort to play an App, Delaware, Montanna, JMU, UMass, Furman, G. South, ect in a good year. My only question that remains is are you willing to back up you claims of such a large LSU victory? So instead of side stepping the question for a third time is this a bet or not?

In many ways, App sneaked up on an ill-prepared Michigan team. I can only imagine how many times someone will mention that Les Miles is a Michigan man, App beat Michigan, blah, blah, blah.
We won't sneak up on LSU. We'll have to beat them fair and square. Here's to an opening week that sees FCS wallop BCS!
McNeese folks, any idea where we should stay in Baton Rouge?
My question is: How long do you give a team to be "snuck up on?" Maybe the 1st half they overlooked App but by the 3rd quarter that had to wear off. You beat a Michigan team that was ready to go by the second half and you can do it against LSU because there is not way that some on the LSU team will not blow off last year.

Or you Port Allen just across the river would be a good spot and you are only about 10 or 15 minutes from the stadium, cross the bridge take the Nicholson exit and you are there

No I believe they were only speculating on a picture for your avatar or simply hoping you would give an answer to my challenge, that only came in response to your numerous claims of the certain Appalachian humiliation. No one made a direct remark about your profession, level of education, maturity, or alma mater. I figured that would be your last post and will take it as a resounding no that you are not willing to back up your claims. I simply suggested a friendly wager very similar to one person wearign the other team's jersey if they lost. I think I speak for most of the ASU posters here when we say please just stay away from all threads concerning ASU. It is a waste of our time to read your posts in them and a waste of your time if you will not back up your claims. Good luck this year in football and may our two prestigous universities meet one day on the field.

LaFell and Byrd are back they got lots of attention with Doucet missing time. LaFell lead the team in yards and only had 7 less catches than Doucet. Byrd led the team in TDs. LaFell did drop some big passes last year. Dickson the tight end also returns. I think alot of people will see Perrilloux's arm strength, that's what made him such a highly sought after recruit.
Also their running game will still be formitable even after losing Hester. Williams and Scott and go for big gains. Holliday is a speedster that can take it to the house.

Alot of people assumed the Doucet was the man all year, but he missed time and that allowed Byrd (who caught some big TDs) and LaFell to step up. But LSU did catch a break on Defense as their defensive end Pittman recieved another year (http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/featured/15536732.html) from the NCAA.
But I write all this to say I'm really pulling against LSU as I always do, especially being from Baton Rouge.

While I think ASU could play a close game, in reality I think LSU is going to blow them out. I know it's the usual SEC-Big 10 argument, but LSU is a different team entirely from Michigan, and this time, LSU will be on their toes, not wanting to suffer the same kind of upset. Best of luck to the Yosefs, but it ain't happening this time! I've got to give them mad props for the way they beat Michigan, but LSU is an SEC team. They won't go down versus App.

I don't know, App isn't even playing the best team in the SEC. Florida and Georgia are defiantly a better team than LSU this year. I don't really think it will matter if LSU is overlooking App or not. I doubt Michigan was. I think App's chances simply come down to themselves. If they can replace their key losses and if they can score on offense, they will be in this game until the end.

I hope you're right. Either way, it should be a great experience being at Tiger Stadium for a night game.

There was a thread on the UNC boards last year after the richmond game that was titled "how did we miss Armanti Edwards" People were crying left and right about how they should have made him an offer. They didn't recruit him simply b/c of his size. I was loving it. I would imagine they will be saying the same thing about DJ Smith this year, but he wouldn't have gone there anyway.

Most of their fans are expecting a blowout, and anything less to them will be a disappointment. I don't think they realize that our players and coaches are good enough that with six and a half months to gameplan for a single opponent, a squash just isn't in the cards. I am not an App fan but their win against Michigan was great. I have argued a long time that football is a state of mind. Just because a teams offensive line or linebackers are bigger, taller, 5 stars, doesnt mean they are as good as the press says they are. App beat Michigan and thats all that matters. They won because the players believed they could period. I played on a GSU team that led a #2 Florida State team in the 4th quarter 10-7 only losing 28-10 in 1988. I believe we would have held on to win if all of our players would have truly believed we would win even after Fla st took the lead 14-10, but I dont believe we did. I think that the feeling of " I knew this would happen" took over. Instead of saying "ok you took the lead now watch this". App never looked back. They got a taste of what the truth really was early in the game and ran with it. The truth is that the FCS players played with the FBS players in high school and many of the FCS guys were better. Just not as tall or big. If a guy signs with UGA but wasnt as good as his teammate in high school that signed with GSU, is the guy that went to UGA all of a sudden better now? No. There are many angles to this but it really boils down to Confidence. Confidence and execution, and App won both.

That is a really good post. Not because I am an App fan(I am) but because it is so true. The reverse is also true in that when ASU answered Michigan's scores and then took a lead it created doubt in the Michigan players and fans. You could feel it. If you are a huge favorite and get put on your heels early, you can psyche yourself out.

Parr:
I agree with you 90%. The only thing I would add is to reiterate that App won the Mich. game with superior speed. But there was also the confidence factor. I was there (on the 90th row!) & had my binoculars trained on Jake Long (OL, 6'20" & 520 lbs. & 0.04% body fat w/ razor tattoos on arms the size of large oak trees) during the coin toss. He was a team captain & had his helmet off so I could see his facial expressions. Throughout the coin toss, I could tell that Big Jake just really could not believe that the mighty Wolverines were playing these little fellers from Appalachian. (& how the heck do you pronounce Appalachian anyway?). He just had this grin that communicated all that (at least to me).
In addition, Lou Holtz said after the game that App. "knew how to win". That sums up exactly and concisely what you have said above about confidence. Fact is, ASU never lost their confidence. Coach Moore told the players before kickoff that they could win that game. At halftime, Coach Moore told the team that they were going to face the best that the Big 10 could offer in the third qtr. as Mich. tried to come back (28 - 17 at halftime). But we weathered that storm & won the game. Good teams just know how to win.

your last sentence totally destroys your argument, and leads us to where your true intentions are. You know the refs didn't blow the game for you, you just have sour grapes. Look I can admit that the refs made some bad calls, and I'd be willing to say that more than half of them went against Delaware. They aren't worth any points as we don't know what would have happened if we had "flawless" refereeing, although I'd say we'd still win by 3+ touchdowns. As to the rushing of the field, I don't agree with it, but I don't see it as classless, just as unsafe. But you got to admit, most of the people who rushed were students, and since the game was basically over with 45 minutes left remaining on the gameclock, we had nothing better to do, we were bored out of our minds! (note, I didn't rush until after the game, I use the possesive because I am A. a student and B. was bored out of my mind). I spent much of the 2nd half figureing out which bar would have the best and cheapest libations and how in the hell i was going to get back to my hotel.

Dude read your posts before you hit submit reply, they don't make any sense. Your arguments are flawed and I have to read your post three times to understand what you are trying to say.
Oh and by the way no one "rushed" the field before the game was over they only gathered on the sidelines to celebrate a game that was decided on the field in the first quarter. The game was decided when we stopped you on fourth and goal and we stuffed cuff on your opening drive. The look on your coache's face said it all. "whats going on, isn't their run defense suposed to be atrocious" Classless was showing your frustrations by hitting a police officer in the face with a football.
Oh and by the way you are not a dynasty b/c you have won several NC's over your entire history. Dynasty's are created by consisent domination over a specific period of time. GSU and YSU also qualify, delaware does not.
Delaware does have a great football legacy and I would love to see us meet more often with home and homes, and yes please leave the MEAC officials at home, but please don't continue to take this thread down the road you are going.
One extremely confused delaware/dayton fan has already been owned on this thread and you are well on your way to being number 2.

So be bored is a no reason to rush the field with 4 minuts left in the game. You coach should on sound system and said something. But that showed he had no class either. I think it is a class issue between school anyway. Delaware fans would never do anything like that. Just my opinion that is all.
YO 08 - You need to get some counseling. The game is over.
App may not win at LSU but we will play hard and give them more than they expect from the game. Instead of telling APP what to do, you should worry about UD.
Thought the "Yo" would wake you up. See you in Chattanooga next year !

As i said , i never said Del would have won, but it would be a much closer game and Appy is not that much better then del. Delaware has as many championships as you do and don't see calling them a dynasty. You guys are kidding yourself if you think you have a chance against LSU.
Now I could be wrong but according to my research 2003 is Delaware's only I-AA/FCS NC. Appalachain has 3. 1<3 not equal to. So ???

The argument about rushing the field has gone on since mid-December. Yes, it showed a lack in judgment to rush the field so early.
That said, the next time another school wins the NC, (hopefully not soon), I hope the fans do rush the field. Don't let your "class" keep you from enjoying the moment.

Never say never, '03 semi agianst Wofford. Your fans were on the field before the game was over, ran right past the police that were circling the field. No attempt to restore order and complete the game, maybe your coach should have taken your advice.

since when did jerry become coach of the fans? if anyone should be on the PA it should be the refs. its well known that Appstate has rowdy fans and they just wrapped up the most historic season in I-AA yet, Im surprised the fans werent on the field at the end of the third quarter.

I found a room on Hotwire at an Extended Stay America for $53/night + tax. It's about five miles from the stadium, which is a little further than I'd like, but the price fits my budget. I've stayed at Extended Stay in a few places and had decent success. You get a full size refrigerator in your room, which is a nice benefit.

I would not expect to agree that, but the refs did decide that game and did it early in the game. UD has a long history of having bad refs from the MEAC in the playoffs. They have screwed us before. I will not admit that you were the more talented team. If we had a better game buy the refs it would have been a lost closer game. I am not saying we would have won, but it would have be closer. The appy fans showed there class by rushing the field with 4 minuts left in the game.

Actually the way the traffic is around LSU on gamedays, you'd want to stay as far away as you can. Most resturants are located about 5-10 miles away from the campus.

I agree that LSU won't take App St. lightly. In spite of that, App St. will still score a lot of points I think. If I am a betting man, which I am not, I would take App St. to cover and the over.
Would love to watch this game. I saw the game vs. Michigan from a bar in Chappel Hill, NC before JMU vs. UNC and it was quite a fun time having all the Tarheel and Dukes fans united in cheering for the crazy upset. Good luck in Baton Rouge - I hope you win to make the JMU game on 9/20 even bigger in Harrisonburg!

Your fun is constantly at someone else's expense, not a friendly argument or debate.
I appreciate you lesson in spelling but I couldn't care less. I don't run spell check on my posts and I never will. I also don't care about capitalization and I see no reason to worry about it or worry about anyone eles's, that is nothing more than nit picky. I was not calling out this person for bad grammar or misspelled words and was not making a personal attack at his level of education. I simply and truthfully want him to re-read his posts before he posts them. They didn't make sense and you had to read them several times to get the jist of what he was trying to say. His research was also lacking as I pointed out in another post.
If he wants to come in and get off topic by bringing up a game that was not being discussed than he can expect to have his opinion disputed and errors in his facts pointed out. Same as you would if I found a dayton thread and took it off topic by bringing up playoff selection or division 2.
As far as your posts on this board I really don't feel like discussing them again, if anyone wants to they can go back and read them for themselves. I for one am just waiting for Aug. 30.

my guess would be that app fans will be spread all over the stadium. I think our allotment will sell out leaving a large number of fans to find tickets through LSU. My guess is there will be pockets of people all over the stadium. I would look for an asu fan with extra tickets or try and get with a group of people trying to scalp them on game day. You might just have to squeeze in. Tickets for the Michigan game were offered to Yosef Club (boosters) members and students. Having graduated and not being a club member, I sat in a Michigan fan dominated section. The Michigan fans were fine, but from what I understand they're sedate compared to LSU fans. I'm going anyway.

As much as I would like the opportunity to boo their picks against us live in BR, I would think that Gameday would be in Atlanta for the Clemson-Alabama game that ESPN brokered. I am not too sure if that's a night game as well, but if that’s the case we would probably be on the next step down of their networks. From what i remember, Alabama v. Clemson is a 7pm game. The game that the gameday crew is at doesn't have to be 8pm on ABC. Herby does the night game on ABC, but he has flown to another site to cover the ABC game. So, ESPN has a decision to make, but im sure everyone wants to see coverage of App St so the gameday crew might be down in BR.

Well I guess since we aren't playing the best team in the SEC we should back out of the LSU game?
I have no illusions about this game. ASU will get the full attention of LSU players, coaches and preparation. A sign of respect will be LSU preparing for us the same way they prepare for any other SEC opponent and I expect no less. We won't sneak up on them. The media hype will whip the Tigers into a frenzy and we will have to hang in there with a highly charged atmosphere and the subsequent onslaught for the 1st quarter.
LSU will prepare for the spread. Both team's players are equivilantly fast but LSU's will be "slightly" bigger and deeper. This could easily look like the UGA-Hawaii bowl game. Again, this game is a pay day for ASU, not a National Championship Game. We will play to win but pull our starters if there is no hope of willing. We have nothing to gain from having people hurt with JMU looming in two weeks. Again its all about the ring.

Good point...I am actually in Grad School at Clemson now and I am torn between which game to attend if either. However, I still see a draw from the Gameday crew to a matchup of both nat'l champs esp after what App did at the Big House. My fiance is a senior at App now, and she has always talked to me about getting Gameday there, like if it was possible because of App's recent run. This may be a good possibility to have them do a game. This might be the best chance to lure them to Boone now if ever. I know it's far fetched but I've attended two ACC schools and seen Gameday 3 times. They should take a shot on an FCS school. I enjoy the competition here just as much as FBS. It'd be great exposure for FCS because there are many schools not far off from doing what App did in Ann Arbor

Michigan's defense is closer to UGA than LSU's 08 defense

Because they beat Michigan it has interest. From what Ive seen, and I saw both teams play on TV last season, ASU is going to go down and probably big.
I would give 17 to ASU fans right now. Over under would be something like 56 with LSU getting the vast majority of the points.
Im sorry, but they are just too physical, just too fast and just too good. That doesn't even mention coaching, game plan and execution.
Its an interesting game, but at this point it looks exactly like the Michigan game looked last year. ASU doesnt have a chance. xcoolx

Agree some, disagree some. Glad you didn't mention coaching and game plan because if all else is equal I would put current day Jerry Moore and current staff up against any staff in college football. What impresses me more is what they do with things not being equal. What I agree with is that we most likely will not win. But, although they have more resources, LSU will have some holes to fill and who knows how full they will be on opening day. It has been mentioned that Michigan was not LSU and that much is true but this season's LSU is also not last season's LSU. And the same can and I'm sure will be said about this season's Mountaineers. We know that both teams will be good, as well as many others, but we don't know how good. It has been metioned somewhere else, maybe in this thread, not sure that LSU will mostly be picked the 3rd best team in the SEC behind Georgia and Florida. And to think I was worried what we were going to talk about in this my first off-season on AGS. xsmiley_wix

about Clemson and Alabama getting Gameday...Just thought of this...that game is at a neutral site game in Atlanta...with probably less of a setting appeal than a neutral site game like Ga/FL or Tx/Ok
and I originally got my interest sparked by reading an article by Stewart Mandel on SI.com that said: "Reigning BCS champion LSU announced it will host the Mountaineers on Aug. 30, creating the first-ever meeting between two defending national champions. With all due respect to Missouri-Illinois and USC-Virginia, it will arguably be the most intriguing matchup of opening weekend."
he also says that both schools have confirmed that ESPN is talking about prime time coverage.

Yep, LSU has to fill a few holes just like ASU has to fill probably just as many. When you go back and compare recruiting classes for the two schools over the last 2-3 years that will give you an idea of what caliber athlete is going to be filling those holes. It will be fun, but it will be very difficult I'm afraid.

I'm with ya there McNeese75. Notice I did mention that LSU has more resources. It's definitely another high mountain to climb. What we have to give us hope is the same stuff was said last year before "the game". And, though it is arguable, Michigan turned out to be a very good football team at season's end, as undoubtedly so will LSU, if not way before season's end. My main point is that LSU will be a different team at the beginning of this season as will ASU. Time will tell, are we there yet?xcoolx

I didn't see anything about a time limit on tailgating.
OK, I've been to LSU games last year and over the last few years since their 1st national championship run (it was my first year of grad school at LSU)
People start arriving Wednesday afternoon in their RVS and don't leave until mid-day on Sunday. NO ONE will be run off after the game. The BEST plan is to PREPARE to tailgate as much after the game as before the game. It takes at least 2-3 hours for the roads to clear out. And if you're not familiar with the area, that's your best option. The Baton Rouge police department changes the traffic flow patterns after the game making MANY roads one-way away from the stadium and you're not allowed to turn off of many of the roads.
My advice is to make friends with LSU fans nearby (as they will provide you with food and even more booze) and DEFINITELY stay several hours after the game to allow time for the place to clear out and the traffic flows to revert to their normal levels and directions.
If anyone else has ANY questions, feel free to PM me or ask me here. I've lived in the Baton Rouge area for about 5 years now. I drive past Tiger Stadium and through the LSU campus EVERY DAY on my way to work in downtown BR.
Just make sure you enjoy yourselves while you're down here. I'm definitely planning on getting to see that game.

I can't speak for the players or coaches, but the Michigan fans definitely overlooked us. I don't expect that LSU will.
Correct. On the speed thing we were discussing, I think if people really think about it they can see it wasn't that Michigan had never seen team speed like App had. Take the Ohio State team from the year before. Tedd Ginn set an Ohio record in high school with a 10.38 100 meters. His average 40 yard time as reported at NFLdraftscout was 4.38 (and he actually ran that at the combine). Tony Gonzales, the other wideout, was reported by NFLdraftscout going into the 2008 draft as having an average 40 yard time of 4.44 (no combine time given). Dexter Jackson's average 40 time at NFLdraftscout is 4.36. It'll be interesting to see what his combine time is.
So you're you're talking about Ted Ginn being about as fast as Dexter Jackson is (probably faster in the 100 meters) and Gonzales being pretty darned fast too. Both Ginn and Gonzalez were taken in the first round. And another 2006 Ohio State wideout, Roy Hall, was taken in the 5th round. He isn't slow either (NFL Draft Scout average 4.46). I don't know how many defensive backs Michigan had returning but the ones that did come back weren't seeing a general level of speed at the wideout position in Appalachian State that they had never seen before.
2006 Ohio State running back Antonio Pittman was reported by NFLscout at average 4.40. For comparison: App State's Kevin Richardson's is reported at average 4.55.
Don't have Ohio State's 2006 free safety's time but this year's player in that position, Nick Patterson, has a NFL Draft Scout reported average 40 yard time of 4.58. Corey Lynch is reported at 4.64.
Quinn Pitcock, a 299 pound Ohio State defensive tackle taken in last season's NFL draft was reported by NFLscoutn at 4.87 average in the 40. Ohio State 247 pound linebacker James Laurinaitis, who will go in the draft this year but was on the field last year, is reported at average 4.53...about the same as Richardson.
No doubt the 2007 App State team had a faster quarterback than the 2006Ohio State did. But if someone were to say they'd dig up all the information on the 40 yard times on all of the starters in particular and teams overall I'd feel very confident betting that 2006 Ohio State would be seen as the faster team overall. At most positions, they'd have faster players.

Team speed isn't just about individual players. That is where everyone is getting confused on this subject. You can put Randy Moss in a Power I formation and he is fast but the team is still not because it is a different philosophy... App's "speed" is based on spreading the field which causes either really soft coverage schemes or 1 on 1 matchups. In both of those scenarios there are spots that you can exploit. The other aspect is the tempo that ASU decides to use. I am sure everyone has seen where they talk about the Jet, Indy and regular speed that App uses but that keeps defenses guessing about when things will get going and really keeps people off-balance.

I would say LSU has zero advantage in coaching, game plan and execution. If there is any advantage I would give it to ASU in that department. There are probably 10 coaches who could take LSU assets and parlay it into National Champ contenders.
This is not a slam on Miles, he is a proven champion. Great coach.

I understand, I was just giving you the option of hanging around for 2-3 hours afterwards or driving straight out. :D The previous comment about control flow on the streets after the game is all too true. It took me over 2 hours to try and get 2 miles away.

Whether or not you scheme to take full advantage of what speed you have is a different matter. What I'm talking about is how fast the athletes are position by position.

It only takes ONE to outrun everyone else. It doesn't matter that other teams had 10 guys almost as fast as ASU's DJ.

Probably the best option is to stay home with a good woman turn on the TV watch a good game then make love. Why go to the Appy/LSU game spend a ton of money, go through a lot of aggravation, then see Appy lose big??xthumbsupx xcoffeex
