Speaking of injuries....
http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/featured/27066514.html
Don't think it looks too serious, but it's tough to put everything into a pass when you've got a tight back....
On the other hand, I haven't seen it posted anywhere, and it wasn't mentioned on goasu, but Jacque Roman wasn't suited up for the scrimmage on Saturday. He seemed to have a brace on his right knee and a slight limp. Anyone know any details?
Heard of 3 Def players that should start, including Roman, that had small injuries (2 knees and a hip), none are considered serious and all would have played had it been an important game.

Yeah, I was concerned Sat. when I saw Jacque on the side line not in pads, but Brian @ Mountaineer Illustated says his injury is not serious. There are a few others with minor injuries, but nothing too bad it doesnt sound like.
Hope we can say the same after 8/30!!

How has Hatch been doing so far during practice? I read somewhere that he had been doing alright, was just curious if anyone had heard anything else.

He has been pretty impressive, the LSU fans I know are happy with him.
No one seems to like the fact that he does indeed have a rag though

Hatch left the second scrimmage early with tightness in his back, but should be fine for gameday. However, all reports I am hearing is that Lee has looked very good in the scrimmages. Also, I keep hearing about how good Patrick Peterson the freshman CB is playing and it sounds likely he will see the field against App.

Who will be App's leading reciever in this game? My guess is Brian Quick judging by his scrimmage performance. He's quick and provides a huge target(41'' vertical at 6'5). His hands have improved a lot from last year too. Should be interesting.

And Michigan all of a sudden is terrible in their blocking schemes?? When your on for a field goal attempt, you know that you want to block the kick but you don't always block it because the guys on the other side are picking who to block on your team. 11 guys trying to run through 9 dudes trying to stop them is not a cakewalk, and almost running it back doesn't make it more impressive, blocking it was the more important part of the equation. Gingell doesn't kick it through the safety 9 out of 10, the safety wouldn't be there...hence the luck factor...otherwise ASU would block every field goal attempt made against them every time...xcoffeex
it wasn't luck. michigans blocking vs app st's rush. xrolleyesx

Guest tickets always are in the endzone opposite the student section.Probably so the students can't throw anything at you. I thought the visitor seats were usually on the west side of the north endzone though. I am in Section 105. Can't they just play this Saturday? The month before football season seems like it last forever.

Ahhh, mah dear Bayou Bengal, let's us redneck hillbillies 'splain a little mountain meteorology to yahs.
Elevations above 3k feet are subject to 30%+ less atmospheric pressure and density of air. (This to some extent explains our propensity to exercise in more 'lustful' activities with our significant others more than flatlanders but that is not the point of this conversation.)
The thinner atmosphere promotes cardiovascular strength. So in sporting contests when we say that the Appalachian Mountaineers have 'more heart' we ain't braggin' - it's just physiology and a statement of fact.
Because the thinner atmosphere above 3k feet has fewer air molecules, Appalachian Mountaineers receive more that twice the ultra-violet radiation from the Sun than do our flatland friends. To break it down in simple terms for you, the heat from the Sun on your skin at 3k+ feet is more than twice as hot as the heat from the Sun on your skin at sea level.
Please feel free to compare the U/V index in Boone at http://www.wunderground.com/US/NC/Boone.html with that of Houston and Baton Rouge, and you will see what I mean.
So let me stress that a little bit of humidity in the flatlands is less of a concern to us than you may think (and don't get me started on how 'nasty' with ozone our mountain air is in western North Carolina).

Baton Rouge will be a breath of fresh air to our lads. xsmiley_wix

I've been to the Mountains a number of times. Frequently during mid summer. If anybody coming from Boone thinks it feels hotter in the Mountains at high elevation during summer than it feels along the Gulf Coast (provided it's not raining) because of increased UV radiation hitting the skin, they are in for a very rude awakening.

Yeah, that was when Tyrod and Sean were having problems and the defense just wasn't playing up to their hype. They were way outcoached in that game on bvoth sides of the ball obviously. It's also obvious that wasn't Va Tech football, had they beaten BC the first time they played(as they should have), it would have been them and Ohio State in the National Championship(almost were in it anyway.) They lost to two teams Ranked 2nd and those were their only losses apart from Kansas.
Still App will have more time to prepare for this game than Tech did and App's offense is better than Techs. 41-21 xpeacex

Just how many miles did you run during your frequent mid-summer visits to the mountains? Were they in mid-day full-sun? Or were you traveling down the Blue Ridge Parkway in your car in the comfort of your air conditioning? xeyebrowx
You clearly fail to grasp the 'science' of increased cardio-capacity of those from higher elevations and discount the heat gain from U/V radiation.
LSU may well win because of their 'meat-on-the-hoof' superior FBS world-class players (with the average gradutation rate from 1997 - 2005 of 34.26%), cheap shots and 'homer' refs. They will not win due to any of your 'perceived advantages' in conditioning or self-proclaimed intimidating humidity.

Old Guy, although your "science" makes sense, I have played and run in both the humid lowlands and the mild high country and I have to say the high country was much more pleasant. There was a similar thread during the season last year in reference to NAU, I believe, and the science said that Boone is not quite high enough to make much difference in cadiopulmonary or cardiovascular capacity. I'm sure there is some but I don't think the heat and humidity will have any more impact on us as it does LSU. Hot and humid is hot and humid, I don't think there's any getting used to it. If your body can't cool, it can't cool, i.e. sweat will not evaporate. There's no getting used to that.

Bingo! We have a winner!

Here are my thoughts on this game.. If this year's Appalachian team is comparable to the '06 and '07 playoff teams, and can reload and fill Jackson, Richardson, Lynch and Browns shoes, they have a shot at LSU.
App beat Michigan last year, Michigan lost to Ohio St. by 11, and Ohio State lost to LSU by 14. With the GPI, Michigan was #7 going into 2007, based on 2006. App was #53, based on 2006. LSU is #1 going into 2008, based upon 2007, App is #44, based on 2006.
On paper, I would give LSU 17 points. But, LSU is having some QB issues and it is the first game of the year. LSU knows App from 2005, and will not take them lightly. I think LSU lost one of their starting O-lineman in camp. LSU has 85 rides and has depth on their side They have App. speed with 22 more scholies. Appalachian has Armanti on their side, which is a neutralizer. If Armanti stays healthy and plays the whole game, this game is close. Out of respect for LSU and Appalachian, LSU by 10. However, I would not be surprised to see Appalachian pull out a win.

How much are they? The Carolina crowds aren't overwhelming and its kinda sad when 60,000 people jam in there and its as quiet as it is. My only affiliation to App is that I saw them live in Chatty against UMass in '06 and just had to shake my head and tip my hat to App. State. As a former player for UMass, I had never seen so much team speed playing or watching a live game. Also, I was impressed with the adjustments the App. St. coaches made for the second half of the UMass title game. Out of respect, I kinda of became an App fan after that game, except when they play a CAA team.
When they announced App was going to play Michigan, I knew App had a shot at beating Michigan as I knew App had most of their team back. I posted last year regarding the App/Michigan game stating that the score would be close in the 4th quarter and that they had a shot to win it. I was rediculed and heckled by other posters. I had to post again this year, as I figure it worked last year. I'd love to see App take down LSU and turn the FBS world upside down again.
I just watched ESPN college football live and Andrew Ware just predicted LSU blowing out APP, 35-7. APParently, he has not seen Armanti and company live.

It was really funny. I talked with him and a program director for ESPN who were in town for the Continental Tire Bowl. Pretty good guys who already knew about App before the Michigan game. Ware was hilarious; he definitely was wearing his Heisman ring so the ladies, who didn't know who he was, could see his resume really easy. The program guy was pretty wasted and talked crap to everyone, but it was still a good time.

No standing in Tiger Stadium?
Doesn't sound too intimidating. xlolx
Standing During Games
POLICY:
LSU encourages fans to be courteous of other fans in
choosing to stand during games. Spontaneous reaction
to plays or significant events is expected and encouraged.
Continued standing during game action when
other fans are sitting is discouraged and will be
addressed by game marshals if complaints from other
fans are reasonable and continuous.
REASON:
Common courtesy dictates that fans should not block
the view of other fans who are seated during game
action.

You have to remember that the 34 against a BCS league opponent is the exception and not the rule. In their other three games against BCS league opponents during their current program zenith Appalachian State scored 8, 0, and 10 points. I know the other three games did not involve Armanti Edwards except for minimal action against NC State, but it still represents the more "typcial" situation.
Another thing is that Michigan's defense really looked bad against another spread option type offense the very next week. The Wolverines gave up 624 yards of offense to Oregon (App State got 387). So I think it's legitimate to opine that Michigan was not playing real good defense against that kind of offense early in the season.
Later they apparently righted the ship to some extent, but I think the odds are that LSU is going to be playing a lot better defense than Michigan was when 2007 opened. Nothing's ever certain but I think that's going to be the case.

You're probably right, but I would think (for the sake of not pulling a Herby) he would have made the score a little closer--especially considering the QB situation down there. We shall see, Ware's prediction could be dead on. As long as there are no injuries, I will be happy.

Sagarin's 2008 pre season rankings are out. In my experience, when I'm made comparisons, I've found that Sagarin spreads have been pretty consistent with lines when lines are established and LSU is a 26 point favorite by that system. I think Michigan was a little more of a favorite than that going in but I can't remember for sure. I think they may have been like a 29 point favorite by Sagarin.
The way I look at it has to do with estimating how often the system is wrong given a certain spread. I'd estimate that teams favored by 26 points in Sagarin's system win somewhere around 90% of the time. And that estimate, in my experience, doesn't change much over the season. It's not a matter in which Sagarin's pre season predictions in that respect are substantially less "accurate" than the late season rankings. 26 point favorites win somewhere around 90% of the time whether you're talking about predicting opening weekend or the final weekend.

Sure. To state the obvious reality that one doesn't need power ratings to see, the smart bet if you were betting straight up would be to bet LSU wins. However, if you're looking at things through the power rating "prism" you wouldn't be absolutely shocked to see a 26 point underdog win.

Appalachian State opens the season Aug. 30 at No. 7 LSU in a nationally televised matchup of the defending national champions from college football's top two divisions. Appalachian State has a Heisman Trophy candidate in quarterback Armanti Edwards, and enough speed at the skill positions to scare any team -- even the mighty Tigers in Baton Rouge.
"They always bring up Michigan. It kind of gets annoying," said the electric Edwards, who accounted for 38 touchdowns last season. "We didn't win a ring off of Michigan. After that we went through a whole season. Luckily, we had our heads on straight."
Appalachian State has been the Michael Phelps of the FCS since coach Jerry Moore's switch to the spread offense gained traction midway through the 2005 season. The Mountaineers have won 36 of their last 40 games, averaged 42.7 points per game last season and are the overwhelming favorites to win a fourth straight national title.
Yet it's Edwards running wild around the slower Wolverines and Corey Lynch's blocked field goal on the final play at the Big House that continue to dominate conversations.
That means many forget Edwards missed four games with a lingering shoulder injury suffered in Ann Arborm, but still threw for 1,948 yards and ran for 1,588. Then there was his remarkable performance in the national semifinal win over Richmond: 495 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns.
To make matters worse for LSU's Les Miles and Southern Conference coaches, Moore believes the game is now coming faster to the junior.
"Armanti right now is seeing so many more things down the field than he did a year ago," Moore said.

1. Appalachian State pulls off another monumental opening upset. This time against LSU, the defending national champion, on Aug. 30. Last year's Michigan miracle was probably the most stunning moment of the season. The three-time Football Championship Subdivision champion won't be sneaking into Death Valley unknown and overlooked. The Mountaineers have one of the top quarterbacks in the country, Armanti Edwards, among their 14 returning starters and are favored to win another FCS (formerly Division I-AA) title.
Edwards accounted for an eye-popping 3,536 yards of offense and 38 touchdowns last season. In contrast, LSU, after quarterback Ryan Perrilloux was dismissed in the spring for multiple violations of team rules, turns to sophomore Andrew Hatch, a Harvard transfer who completed one pass last year, or redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee, who hasn't taken a college snap. Even so, this is LSU; the rookie quarterback will be surrounded by talent.

Anybody heard anything about ASU student tickets to the game? I was told by David Jackson and later by the box office that they'd go on sale Monday August 25th, but I haven't heard anything about it since. I'm sitting here with a plane ticket and a hotel reservation but no game tickets. Getting just a little nervous.
Don't be too nervous, if you get there you can always find someone selling tickets outside the stadium. One of the benefits of almost 100K tickets is that there are always plenty of folks that can't make it for some reason and their buddies sell their tickets.

For the App fans coming to LSU, be sure to arrive very early. It is going to rain a lot this week at LSU due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay and I have heard that some of the grass lots typically used for parking may be closed because they will be too muddy.
Also, if you are in town on Friday night and looking for something to do near campus check out The Chimes (for dinner, ) and The Varsity (after dinner till 2:00) at the north gates of campus on Highland Rd.

It's from that Bleacher Report article written by the ex-UNC football player. The one calling Appalachian the "most delusional" fanbase in the country. He said App fans believe they are "going to walk out of Tiger Stadium with the pelt of Mike VI slung over its shoulder to use as a rug."

Michigan did not have a bad team last year by the time it was all over. However, I do think there's something to the possiblity that the Wolverines started the season not playing very well on defense. I mean, they did give up that 624 yards to Oregon the next week. They were down 32-0 at halftime in that one.

Oh...I agree. In fact one argument against the spread option shotgun offense is what happened to both Oregon and West Virginia last season. What I often hear is that it puts the QB at too much risk of injury.
I don't think West Virginia for sure would've lost any games during the regular season if its quarterback hadn't gotten nicked. I'm not as familiar with what happened with Oregon...but I do know their starting QB was nicked up a lot and it hurt them.
Still...Michigan's defense was really a sieve in that game.

Dixon tore his ACL I believe which ended their season. I agree, WVU probably would have beat Pitt if not for White getting nicked. I think it does put the QB at risk. That's why it took me so long to come around to the idea of the option. At least passing, he is more protected. Michigan's D was bad in that game, but after losing in the biggest upset of all time, I don't know any team that would have been up for that game (with kids in the uniforms).

Rather than sitting in traffic on I-40, 54, 15-501 and other roads, two lots (located off of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd) offer Tar Heel Express bus service three hours before kickoff and three hours after the game with drop-off points including Franklin Street, Tar Heel Town and Kenan Stadium, so coming early or staying after to enjoy Downtown Chapel Hill has never been easier. The drop-off site for all six routes is one block from Kenan Stadium and Tar Heel Town. The costs for all Tar Heel Express buses are $5 round trip and $3 one-way.

From LSU press conference:
Appalachian State is a very fine football team. The Mountaineers have a great tradition of winning. Anytime that you play a program or team that is used to winning, they bring a little bit more to the table. They are going to be competitive. We understand that. We played them two years ago, and I want to say, into the 4th quarter, it was 14-0. It was a very competitive game then. I expect it to be a very competitive game this Saturday.
I like the fact that we are playing a talented opponent. I think our guys prepared very well based on that. I just happened to sit next to Coach Moore at the national convention last year, and in 19 seasons, Coach Moore has done a great job there and what a great coach he is. He is certainly a coach that the profession is very proud of.
Stacy Searles, who is an old offensive line coach for us, coached for him and was at Appalachian State and told a story that really brought our two programs together. We’ve always rooted for them and frankly, look forward to competing with them this Saturday. They’ve made a tradition of playing great teams. They’ve played North Carolina State, Auburn very close and then, obviously the major example, the Michigan win at Michigan in the season opener a year ago. We understand that they are coming here to play us well. If you look at their offense, their quarterback, Armanti Edwards is a tremendous player. He is 6’0 tall, 175 pounds. He throws the ball well, very fast and really makes a lot of quality decisions for their offense. He, Devon Moore, their veteran tailback, not their returning starter, but a guy who is going to carry the ball more for them than he did in the past. He certainly has a lot of experience in their offense, and he has had plenty of preparation as we go forward into the season.
One of their big playmakers, CoCo Hillary, is also a great returner and a great receiver, and certainly, we will have to know where No. 6 is at. They return three linebackers, their tackle leaders, and guys that know how to play football. They have three starters back on the defensive front, and again, this is a defensive front that has had success. Looking at their special teams, I think they have a great punter and a guy who puts the ball up in the air with a long hang time and very little opportunity to return balls. Their special teams have always been solid. We look forward to the matchup to be honest with you. I think our offense is certainly prepared and looking forward to starting fast.
Defensively, I think our defensive front is up to the challenge. This team led all of football in rushing a year ago, and we’re going to be challenged to play extremely well and disciplined upfront. I think our guys there are looking forward to it. Ricky Jean-Francois and Charles Alexander, who is really just coming back to health and will practicing again this week, are guys who are both really looking forward to playing football and a challenging Appalachian State offense.
We’re still going to pass rush. We’re going to have those big guys come up the field at him, but we’re fortunate to have some athletic ends that we think can run, as well. I think both of (Des Tyson Jackson and Kirston Pittman) and all of our ends that can play have to be aware that (Edwards) has great feet and quickness.
They play well year after year. I think Jerry’s done a great job in guiding the program. Certainly, they‘re in position to play strong against anybody. They have a great football team. It’s not specific to any division. They have a good football team.

“No excuses.”
That’s the message Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards wants to send to LSU.
Not boastful, just a reminder that the shock-the-world, huge underdog card has already been played.
“Last year (after the 34-32 upset at No. 5 Michigan), people said we won because they weren’t prepared and they didn’t practice for us,” said Edwards, who will lead his team into Tiger Stadium Saturday in the season-opener pitting the two 2007 Division I national champions.
“But LSU knows we are coming. We won’t be sneaking up on them, and we’re going to find out how we do against (FBS) competition when they are ready for us. I like it that way.”

We grew up with that heat ... and no air conditioning for a long time. If you don't start hydrating by early Thursday with non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic drinks, you'll be in trouble. Rule of thumb from the urologist dad ... if you don't have to pee every 2 hours, you're getting dehydrated. Drink up and enjoy the game.

Unless it speeds up greatly the hurricane won't be into the middle of the Gulf until sometime Sunday afternoon. So I doubt that the Tigers are doing any voodoo to bring it in.
Plus, I don't think the Tigers are exactly scared of the Mountaineers.

Miles must have told them we hate their mothers....
"I didn't take it seriously until after the game," Pittman said. "It was crazy. It upset me. I don't even play for Michigan, and I was kind of upset they lost because I had never thought Appalachian State would go into their house and beat them."
"Michigan made a lot of mistakes on offense," LSU junior offensive tackle Ciron Black said. "That threw off the whole offense, but at one point they were rolling. Then they kind of let up off of them, and Appalachian State never stopped. Their motors never stopped. They were hungry. So if we get up by a touchdown or five touchdowns, we've got to keep pounding them."
Focusing on Armanti:
"That quarterback, I don't remember seeing a guy like that before," Jackson said. "He runs a legitimate 4.3, and he's all over the field like a running back.
"Even if you have free access toward a sack and take one awkward step and don't go for his up-field shoulder, he can step back and move on you and take off."
"They have a lot of fight in them," Pittman said. "They weren't scared of Michigan, you could tell from the tape. They went right at them. We know who they are. They're thinking upset again, and we're thinking 'not in our house.' "
I love the fact that we are respected and thought so highly of by their coaching staff that they are going to prepare this hard. However, the likelihood of an upset seems to be dwindling as time goes by.....

Just a little note for yah: It ain't braggin' if you back it up. And that's the problem for Appalachian.
There are probably more 'All Pros' playing for LSU than there are for the Detroit Lions. If you can't go to college, go to LSU and play football.
These aren't 'Michigan Gentlemen' (who are actually expected to succeed in the classroom and graduate from college). Over the last 10 years Michigan's graduate success rate is more than twice that of LSU.
In the 66 year history of the NFL draft, 18 Appalachian players have been selected. LSU has had 19 players drafted in the last three years.

I personally was hoping for Oregon and West Virginia, then Dennis Dixon desided to puss out and get hurt and Pat White followedxrolleyesx .
WVU was the best team in College Football when Pat White was healthy. Would have torn up any team at the end of the season last year while Pat White a.k.a. Armanti Edwards wanna be was playing.

There's been talk on Tiger Rant that the decision hadn't been made earlier this week, including an email from the associate athletic director.
We have gold jerseys that we are wearing for our throwback game against Jacksonville. I doubt we wear them against LSU.
I'm still not convinced we're wearing black ones, though. I'm just waiting and seeing what we show up with.

I think some heads just exploded over at tigerdroppings.com
Thought I'd post a fun little comparison for all those people saying the LSU is not Michigan.
You are right, LSU is not Michigan.
Michigan was ranked 5. LSU is 6th and 7th in the Coaches and AP polls respectively.
Michigan had
1. A well-seasoned 4-year starting QB in Chad Henne
2. A proven returning workhorse RB Mike Hart, running behind the No. 1 player in the country at OL (Oh yeah! Jake Long did go 1st in the NFL draft...he must really suck)
3. SUPER Mario Manningham - a college reincarnation of Randy Moss (I've seen them both play against ASU in college, by the way...we Beat Marshall, and RM by association too)
What does LSU have - Nothing Quite as Good.
1. A QB controversy with no definitive choice at starter. None of them have the experience that Henne did, and likely none of them will be better "in this game" (maybe in their career) than Henne would have been. Also, none of them are as good as Armanti PERIOD.
2. A RB who took comprised less than 1/4 of the running plays and gained maybe 400 yards ?
3. Your top returning WR - Ok he led your team in catches, but had 4 TD's all season. Not quite super Mario numbers. (Lets see he had almost 800 yards and 9 TD's in 2006 - the year before the ASU game - and by the way, he missed several games while having knee surgery.
So I'm going to go ahead and stick by my statement that Michigan last year will be better than LSU this year, and that ASU will play you much better than anyone in Tiger Stadium (even ASU Fans).

Yeah, I've seen a lot of "LSU is not Michigan" posts over on the Tiger boards.
Who are they trying to convince? Us, or themselves?
The pressure the Tigers must be feeling...remember, UM simply didn't prepare, didn't know who was coming to town (their coach said so), or, UM just sucked last year (preseason ranking and National Champ predictions aside). If App hangs in and loses a close game, or, God forbid, wins-- what will the Tigers' excuse be?
For the Mountaineers? No pressure at all. Play your game, see what happens. End of the day, go home even more notorious, or go home with the universe returned to its natural order. Either way, go home almost a million bucks richer, and National Championship hopes intact.
Most of us are rational enough to know that lightning almost never strikes twice-- but that nagging little "what if" is what makes this game so compelling.

Why is that a big deal for Michigan, LSU beat Florida as well and they held them to less points than Michigan. Florida wasn't anywhere near the team that won it all in 2006.

My post was more in response to the fact that Michigan had a subpar year and lost 4 games (which they did). I was simply pointing out that two of the teams that beat UM were ranked very highly and were very talented. Just as 11-0 didn't mean that Hawaii was the best team in the country last season, 8-4 didn't mean Michigan was the worst. Trust me, I don't like the "winner selected by past opponents" way of thinking. xthumbsupx
I don't know how the ASU-LSU game will turn out. On one hand, I think App is completely capable of winning. They have the talent to take advantage of any situation that may present itself. On the other hand, LSU flat wore VT out last season, and they very well may do the same to us.
ASU has some things working in their favor. New LSU QB, new defensive secondary for the Tigers, new Defensive Coordinator for the Tigers, no Jacob Hester (thank goodness - that kid could run up the middle all day), and, maybe most importantly, a chip on their shoulder. LSU has plenty of favorables, too, which I'm not going to hash out here. I'm hoping for a well-played, well-officiated game with no injuries to either squad. If we get that, it ought to be entertaining.
