LSU plays hard and are physical, but not dirty. Les Miles is a class act and would never let his players get away with playing dirty, unlike Tubberville who had his O-lineman chop block Glenn Dorsey last year because he was physically dominating them.

The general feeling other LSU fans I know have is that AE will probably make a few big plays during the game, but that our lines will become more dominant as the game wears on and that will be the determining factor. If they are being honest they will admit AE is very talented.

Every one on the LSU board says they can defend the type of offense App runs because it is similar to Floridas. It may be similar but Florida has a less shifty quarterback to run that offense. I was watching a replay of the Arkansas and LSU game last season. When McFadden was in the game at QB it was much more like App's offense than Floridas because of McFaddens speed and ability to actually somewhat throw the ball. There were a lot of holes on draws for him from that position and he broke a lot of long runs in that game without being touched until he was 15 yards down the field.
App will run a lot of draw plays and QB options. After watching that game LSU looks more like an average team and not much better than Michigan did(since everyone seems to reference back to Michigan when talking about what may affect the outcome of this game). Armanti will get to run the ball as much as he can handle with my guess Robert Welton and Devin Radford getting the majority of the carries as backs. Weltons size will give App a prototypical size runningback and Devin Radford will give the backfield even more speed than it already has.
After watching that game I think App matches up a lot better than a lot of the LSU fans and some other FCS people do. They will spread out LSU's defense and use those holes as running lanes. They will rely a lot on running in this game I believe as LSU's secondary will probably be superior to App's recieving corps. But if the running game gets going the passing game will become available and AE will for sure take advantage of that.xrulesx
I change my prediction. 41-31 LSU

That's a homer statement if I've ever heard one. The block on Dorsey was nasty and should have been flagged.
But are you suggesting Tubberville coached that and it wasn't a mix up in blocking assignments?
LSU is physical but not dirty. Auburn is physical and dirty. Why? Because they play in the same division and are not your team?

Depth and heat will defenitely be hard to overcome. ASU is going to have to play more than 29 players in the LA heat. With a young o-line and thin secondary the second half will be difficult.
Let's turn that heat up in the indoor facility.

I like your point spread, just not enough points. 41-31 is what i'm going with after seeing a replay of the Arkansas-LSU game. They weren't ready to handle the spread with a quarterback who could run the ball(when McFadden was put in at QB) They couldn't stop it and AE might not be as fast but he's fast enough to get through holes for big gains. So I see more points.
I just don't see our DB's being able to match up step for step with LSU's recievers. Run defense will be fine and the QB probably won't get too comfortable too often sitting in the pocket. So i'd expect some delayed blitzes from safeties while sending Pierre in to flush the QB. I wouldn't be suprised to see Quavian Lewis back there a lot.
If only Tim Washington were still at App you could say the QB would never be comfortable. The NC game he was in Flaccos face every play. The last play Michigan ran on that deep pass to Manningham he was held or he would have knocked that ball back in Henne's face.xnonono2x He was around the defender and the Olineman had the back of his jersey.

I go to the LSU board and I see ridiculous stuff such that I don't know if they're just smackin' or if they're serious. Stuff like saying a couple of their linebackers are faster than Armanti Edwards.
But I see that kind of thing here too. Like that statement above. Are you saying App State has better players overall than LSU? Because that's ridiculous. No way. I think it's very possible that App State won't have a single player that could start for LSU. Edwards is a special case because I think he probably would never start for the tigers because of a combination of size bias and system. But, otherwise, LSU may very well have better players in each of its starting position than anybody at App State that might play those positions.

You could make a strong case for D.J. Smith. Also I read somewhere a long time ago that Jaque Roman was offered a scholorship by Auburn but was waiting for one from Florida but Florida never offered him one and when he was ready to accept Auburns they had taken back their offer. So he worked for a year after highs chool then enrolled at App. D.J. Smith had offers I believe from Virginia Tech and UNC but chose App. Devin Radford runs a 4.31 so you could make a case for him even though he didn't play at Virginia Tech, he never waited around long enough to find out.

You never know until the game is played but I think LSU's offensive line is going to dominate App's defensive front in very aspect. I think they'll run the ball well and their quarterback will have plenty of time to throw the ball. I say that because most observers locally think this is going to be the best offensive line LSU has ever had. The Tigers are also absolutely loaded at running back. I don't App State's run defense is going to be fine at all and it's going to be up to App State's offense to keep LSU's offense off the field as much as possible. Otherwise I think LSU will completely wear out App's defense and it'll get ugly.
Last year against Michigan App State gave up 246 yards rushing at 6.2 yards per carry. I think this LSU team is going to have a better run blocking offensive line as well as a better stable of running backs than Michigan did.

You're right there is probably not 1 player on the LSU roster that would START for LSU, and it's not because of TALENT, it's because if SIZE. I think that the ability and knowledge of most of the guys on our team are as good as any player for LSU. That is my opinion.
Talent is just that it's talent... experience is the one thing that some of our guys lack, but the talent, the promise that with experiance they will be great football players. Coach Moore is a great judge of talent...where other fail to see the potential he and his coaching staff find those "diamonds in the rough" and mold them into great players.

Yes you are right, LSU '08 isn't Michigan '07 -they were higher rated than you guys! With that said, I think your score prediction is about right.
Higher-rated? Pinch me! You mean the pollsters - the same ones who keep sending Big 10 champs to the slaughter at the end of the FBS season - were wrong about Michigan? Shocking! (There's a reason why the end of the FCS season is so much more satisfying than the end of the FBS campaign.)
The simple reality is that a team that usually spends its year walking over a largely weak conference until its final game is hardly the same as a program that constantly competes for the championship of the nation's dominant FBS conference.
ASU has a fantastic program - obviously. However, a defending national champion, down several key seniors but with phenomenal replacement for all but one, is a wholly different story. (And yes, had Ryan Perriloux not imploded, this would have been much, much worse on August 30.)

Yeah, no ones going to argue about Ohio State being thrown into the lions den. The BCS people just care about money, and the Big Ten will change with the spread offense being installed at Michigan and everyone see's it coming but no one wants RR to succeed even though at Michigan he will get every recruit he needs to perfect the offense.
All that aside, App's defense is much faster than LSU is giving them credit for being and AE is much faster than just an ordinary spread offense(i.e. Almost a tenth of a second faster in the 40 than Tebow which is quite a bit, also more elusive). He also played through the Michigan game hurt because he sustained the shoulder injury in practice,(you can go back and tell your friends on tigerdroppings.) I read that Jared Reine, starting cornerback who is 6'1(not lacking size) ran a 4.43 out of High School. Considering Mark LeGree beat him down the field often on kickoffs i'm guessing his 40 time is in the 4.4's.(starting safety). Cortez Gilberts was 4.5 out of HS but he has will be a junior this year and i'm sure it has moved into the 4.4's. Leobnard Love is the only question I have and from watching him play my guess is a 4.5. So if Apps CB's get beat it won't be because of size or speed. Inexperience will kill in this game and LSU will throw quite a bit more than people expect.
D.J. Smith will be the best defensive player of this game for App if LSU decides to run the ball. He will surely have over 10 tackles and after watching him last year he hits probably harder than anyone on the defense. Thogh if LSU's runningbacks are as great as said to be he will get trucked on every tacklexrolleyesx . The d-line this year is more experienced and even with Tharrington gone they have players ready to step up and fill the void(i.e. Malcolm Bennett and Quavian Lewis). LSU may have 200 yards rushing. Any less then 250 for them as a team should be a failure according to what i've read on the LSU boards.
41-(31)xthumbsupx . LSU won't be able to fill every hole for Armanti to run through and with two back sets against Arkansas they had trouble and App actually has someone who can pass so that will allow them to put some points up. xbowx xeekx xbawlingx xsmhx xconfusedx xcoffeex

IMO it would be dumb to move up without an invite from a BCS conference such as the SEC, ACC, or Big East. None of whom will invite App to play for them. If the Big East were smart they'd invite App instead of Navy. App would draw a lot of interest given their win over Michigan and would probably help increase the strength of the conference as a whole.xcoffeex
And how great would it be to see all those spreads in one conference. It would be like a smaller, slightly less talented SEC. Big Ten still runs the pro style offenses for the most part while the SEC is exclusively spread. Sad story but when Rich Rod gets going with his spread the tables will turn and the best conference in CFB will be back with the Big Ten.xthumbsupx PThe prestige of the big ten will be enough.

Its hard to beileve that Anthony Williams went from 1st Team All- American to now being our #4 DT heading into fall camp. I think Robertson will be able to win out the starting spot over Lewis mainly due to the size advantage he will give us. Lewis would be great coming in every 3 or 4 plays just to pin his ears back and rush the QB. I don't think anyone expected Jason Jones to step in and take a starting spot at DE, but we need him now that Tharrington is out. Our starting lineup should looks like this...
Jones (6-2 250) Bennett (6-2 279) Witte (6-6 285) Robertson (6-2 250)
Thats the most size we've had across the front 4 in a long time.

My guess would be if there's a blowout at LSU and then most likely in a few others like Jacksonville, PC, Samford, and possibly WCU (if its anything like last year). For the most part though, don't think we'll really use him at QB in a close game unless absolutely necessary. Maybe they will find another way to use his talent in other areas though if he really wants to be on the field (then you are chancing injury to the backup QB though).

I wouldn't expect to play in any close games, but any pt he gets will be good. I've watched this kid play quite a few times, he can throw the ball well.

Yeah, as mentioned in the article he's apparently got a stronger arm than AE, but his accuracy isn't quite as good yet.

I have a question for you Appalachian guys and gals.
Dexter Jackson was as big a factor in your win over Michigan as Edwards was. He was the best player on the field in that game (including Hart nd Henne). Who is going to fill that role this year versus LSU?

Its mostly a guessing game as to who will shine. But there are plenty of talented people to step up.
-Hillary had a big game at Michigan and is now back as a Soph the 1/2 WR position.
-Courman also had some good catches in the Mich game.
-My guess is Hill (supposed to be about the same speed as Dexter) will do returning.
-Our RBs will probably play a larger part in game planning this year Moore/Radford/Welton
-And then there is of course AE

personally i believe dex came out big because he was the go to guy on alot of those plays due to his speed. if you throw another speed demon in on some of those plays (like radford) i strongly believe you are going to get the same results or close to them. execution is key.

we have a speed WR that no one is talking about a whole lot. CoCo and T.J. are great and James Hill can fly, but Tavaris Washington plays very very similar to how Dexter did at the same stage in his career, he has been learning the O as well as transitioning from playing only one year of WR in HS, I think he will step up this year

I was worried about that last year....hans and dexter were locks but with Josh Johnson, coco, and TJ all being good WRs and then james hill who can contribute too...
I think we spread it around pretty well though....luckily everyone cares more about winning than they do themselves and their stats.

Ah, there will be a lot of subbing at LSU though so I imagine there will be a lot of different d-linesmen playing in that game. Quavian Lewis IMO should be considered an option as a sub at LB because of his speed, we all know Jaque Roman isn't the fastest guy in the world.

The more I see the more I think LSU is really going to blow them out badly. You do not want an inexperienced offensive line opening the season against what LSU is going to have on the defensive front.
And the thing about practicing mid day in order to experience temperatures in the mid 80s? Good grief.
They're going to get killed.
I'm not sayng that I'd be disappointed if they are competetive. But the more time goes on and I see the hype they're getting so as to focus LSU players and see stuff like losing all that experience on the offensive line and having the new guys have to open the season at LSU, the more I think this is going to be really, really bad.

Exactly, I checked the weather in Boone and Baton Rouge this morning and in Boone it said it was cloudy 59 degrees and actually felt 59 degrees, in Baton Rouge it was cloudy 83 degrees and felt 92 degrees. The heat index making it feel hotter is something you have to be in a while to acclimate to.
Even living in it my whole life, it takes a few weeks each summer of getting out and being in the heat each June before the heat doesn't get to you. If it was a night game it wouldn't matter as much, but with a 4:00 kickoff it is going to be brutal even for the fans just sitting in the stands.
Tip for App fans: Drink a glass of water between each beer to stay hydrated, but if you are drunk enough you will almost forget about how hot it is. To get your drinks into the game try this: http://www.thebeerbelly.com/products.asp

To make matters worse, we will most likely be in our all black uniforms.
I was reading about LSU traditions and how they used to be one of the only home teams to wear white jerseys. I know in the 05 game, they wore purple, so I was unsure of what the Apps would be sporting on Aug. 30th.
Correct me if I'm wrong GT, it turns out that they only wear the white for conference home games and their OOC opening home game each year. That would mean we would be in our all black uni's in the bayou evening sun and heat and would explain why they wore purple the last time we met (LSU pounded North Texas the week before).

My understanding is that App has to agree to let them wear white for the game, per NCAA rules.
Over on the TigerRant one guy says he knows the equipment manager for the team and he says App has not said yes or no to their wearing white. Another poster states that " WE ARE WEARING WHITE FOR THE HOME OPENER THIS SEASON!!! Herb Vincent said so on Buddy's show Friday."

I can see both sides. If I'm the Apps, I definitely don't want to be in the Black uni's. However, I don't think JM and the crew are the type to mess with tradition, and as stupid as it seems, things like this can motivate a team across the board (example: UGA in their getting to go in their black uni's at the last moment last year)

It depends on who is at the gate checking, the easiest way is usually to fill up a few ziplock bags (get the good ones and double bag) with some whiskey and then buy a coke and mix your drinks. Sometimes they will get you to pull up your shirt a little to show your waisteline and may possibly check you socks but less likely.
If you have a female with you they can usually find better spots to stick the ziplocks, but as long as they are not sticking out of your waisteline or your socks you should be fine.

Actually more amazing is that AE is very rarely running from pressure. A large majority of plays it is either a designed run/rollout or he gets the pass off without moving out of the pocket (very quickly). Its been rare to see a defense cover all the WRs long enough for pressure to flush him.

I wasn't even being homerish on there. I said 41-21 on tiger droppings. That sounds more reasonable than GGASU saying 37-27 with LSU scoring late to make it respectable.xpeacex

I think McNeese has a lot of support in southwest LA while LSU support is more statewide. I have a lot of family in southwest LA and they all support both McNeese and LSU, there is not really any rivalry between the two schools.
The same can not be said for LSU and Tulane, as an LSU fan I want Tulane to lose every game in every sport.xnodx

I didn't say all Southern fans (just the ones I know and I know quite a few), and besides it's sports everybody dislikes another school. How much time have you spent with Southern fans? I've spent plenty of time at LSU. I would expect LSU to dislike us, we're small fries compared to the Tigers.

The announcers have been announced (haha) by ESPN. From Appfan.com via awfulannouncing.blogspot.com:
Appalachian State @ Louisiana State (ESPN, 5pm) - Sean McDonough, Chris Spielman
This duo handled the NC game last year, as well as most of our play-off games. IMO, they were good for the most part, and were wowed by AE's performance against Richmond. Their no Aikman - Buck combo, but I guess we could do worse. The best part is that they are greatly familiar with our team, and will do us justice throughout the course of the game.

Baton Rouge August weather averages:
Average High Temp: 91 degrees
Average days above 90 degrees: 22

James (Denver): Not a fan of Appalachian State, but I'm intrigued by the matchup with LSU. It seems they are motivated and have a speedy offense, while LSU is a powerhouse with questions at corner and linebacker. That sort of match may help App.State make it a game, eh?
SportsNation Graham Watson: You have to like this matchup simply because everyone knows App State is coming to play. LSU has a few questions, App. State is pretty veteran and got a huge boost off of creating an upset special last season. It won the D-IAA championship. 3. The pride of Appalachian State - The Mountaineers may not beat LSU in Death Valley, but watch this game and pay special attention to the confidence and passion they play with. This team has won three straight FCS national championships and acts accordingly. They represent the enthusiasm the Southern Conference teams, as a whole, play with. Don't label this bunch as overachievers. They are talented, well-coached and play to win. This pairing of the FBS national champion LSU and the FCS national champion Appalachian State, who beat Michigan in 2007, is just awesome.

Are you coming to the game? If so bring me some of whatever you are smoking. No way App scores 41, I think LSU will run a lot which will shorten the game and keep the score for both teams lower. I think it may be close in the first half, but LSU wins by at least 14 in the end.

and the win helps all FCS teams.....they start getting recognition in normal national polls....even Delaware (helped by App State, imagine.)
There, I changed it for you.xthumbsupx just a slight error in your number arrangement.

Yes. So the best thing would be to beat LSU, celebrate a week and be modest like winners, and drop it.

A) It wasn't just luck. But you already know that. :)
B) LSU beating ASU by 40 won't erase the accomplishments of the last 3 years, so surely some talk would continue. It may bring some of us back to earth which, from your perspective, would be considered a good thing (understandably).

A) Blocking a field goal when your up 2 is mostly luck...it doesnt happen everyday. 9 times out of 10 Gingell (UM kicker) would have made that kick.
B) No it wouldn't but it would knock your fanbase down a peg or two...right around the level with Georgia Southern...who still has three more NCs than you do xrulesx

How is it luck that they broke through, and not only tipped the kick, they demolished it and almost took it back for 6. How does Gingell kick it through a f***ing safety 9 times out of 10? He didn't miss it. App St worked through their blocks. No luck involved.

The kick before the Lynch block was blocked by Brian Quick. May want to rethink the 9/10 figure... we blocked 2/4 of their field goal attempts.

they blocked a FG to win the game...that they had already blocked one before makes it that much luckier...
The rest that game, they played their hearts out and deserved the W, but..
To block a FG against UM to win that game = Lucky. PERIOD.

And Michigan all of a sudden is terrible in their blocking schemes?? When your on for a field goal attempt, you know that you want to block the kick but you don't always block it because the guys on the other side are picking who to block on your team. 11 guys trying to run through 9 dudes trying to stop them is not a cakewalk, and almost running it back doesn't make it more impressive, blocking it was the more important part of the equation. Gingell doesn't kick it through the safety 9 out of 10, the safety wouldn't be there...hence the luck factor...otherwise ASU would block every field goal attempt made against them every time...xcoffeex

Using that logic, Michigan is LUCKY it didn't lose by more. Brian Quick dropped a TD in the endzone and we settled for a FG (4pts). Julian Rauch missed a FG off the post (3 pts) that is just as much "luck" as blocking a kick...

Just curious-- have you watched the whole game?
If you follow Appalachian football at all you would know that blocking kicks is fairly routine for us. Anyone have a number on Corey's career blocks? I think it's between 5-8 but not sure exactly.
Page 195!!! Thanks haters! we couldn't have made it this far without you.

Page 195!!! Thanks haters! we couldn't have made it this far without you.Going with Skjellyfetti. Blocking one field goal might be considered lucky, but two shows the strength of their special teams. The fact that App had a considerable lead early on in the game shows that it was hardly luck.
Michigan may have been wildly caught off guard, but it was not luck.

The blocked kick at the end was, at the time time, called "the Furman Block".....
now I dont know about you but I typically dont name plays that are based on luck. Corey Lynch said to the coached "lets run the 'Furman' block" the line man next to him went wide to draw the wing man out as he cut inside towards the hold...resulting in HISTORY!!!xeekx
By the way they now call that the "Michigan Block"!!!xwhistlex

Don't think it looks too serious, but it's tough to put everything into a pass when you've got a tight back....
On the other hand, I haven't seen it posted anywhere, and it wasn't mentioned on goasu, but Jacque Roman wasn't suited up for the scrimmage on Saturday. He seemed to have a brace on his right knee and a slight limp. Anyone know any details?
