ETSU HC Tre Lamb has resigned to take the same job at Tulsa.

Hopefully, he won't drag the Golden Hurricanes into an actual hurricane. You know, unlike last time.

I guess the real question is how many G-W players, I mean ETSU players will join him. LOL.

Not too many. It didn't work out too well for Jumpin' Scotty to take all his APSU kids up a level to UTEP. Maybe one or two, but not like he did from GW

Nah…couple of Defensive Players there that FUBeAR likes and 1 WR, but don’t think Coach Lamb and that WR were highly simpatico … so, FUBeAR would set the O/U @ 4.5 go from ETSU to Tulsa

Let's see, he was "...extremely humbled and thankful for the commitment from ETSU Athletics and our University" for all of 16 days.

Prolly more thankful for the $800k/year raise he just got.

I had forgotten that Lamb had signed an extension. Looks like he left ETSU a parting gift of a $500K buyout.

Was hoping beyond hope that Lamb would have stayed long enough to win a conference title/playoff appearance and in a few years, a national title. I felt he was that good. Lamb's comments after the Furman game caused some discussion among local media members. I suspected after the VMI game he lost the locker room.

Here's hoping ETSU doesn't hire a Derek Dummy type.

Let's be honest. The days of SoCon teams winning a national championship are behind us. The best any SoCon team can hope for is winning the SoCon title, and maybe winning a game or two in the playoffs.

I disagree with this. And not just from a “Mercer could do it” standpoint. I really do think there are a few teams in our conference who could get that far. Not right now but I also wouldn’t say never.

Things tend to be pretty cyclical. For a long time, the SOCON had multiple teams who were capable of going deep in the playoffs and even wiining (and some who actually won) a natty. This lasted over multiple decades (80/90/2000s), but we saw the top teams move up. Then we had a run of some really talented CAA teams sprinkled in with the long run that has been going on in the Dakotas. And now with so many other programs moving up, and so much talent moving around due to the portal and NIL, I expect we'll see another shift.

The biggest problem I see right now with the SOCON programs is that the truly up-and-coming talent (both coaching and playing) seem to jump ship quickly. I saw on ETSU's board that at least 3 coaches from the staff will be following Lamb and that probably others will, too. So you not only lose a lot of kids when a coach leaves, but you lose a lot of continuity with how the program is run, how the schemes a new staff brings in might not mesh with whatever talent you have left, etc. And you find yourself in a constant loop of nearly starting over every few years.

Programs that have long-term success just reload and don't wholly change who they are. The faces change, and maybe there are some tweaks and a litle more passing or tempo, but the ones who have been doing really well don't try to fix what ain't broke.

I posted a rephrased version of the above comment to an ETSU-centric YouTube channel. The guy running the channel posted a rather interesting response: "His interviews were always weird. I asked a question in a coaches' show mid-season about how Jaylen King was progressing, and he answered that he was progressing good, but he obviously threw his quarterbacks under the bus." If that did not prove my point that he lost the locker room at season's end, I don't know what does.

Why?

I get Healy has a reputation for recruiting but you only bet on potential when a guy doesn't have a track record yet. Well, he's got one and it's a whole lot of meh. Dude caught lightning in a bottle one year at A-Peay but every other team he's had has been right around .500.

My guess is the SOCON and TN ties. But doesn't every school say they got their "top target" regardless of it if was their 4th of 5th choice???

FUBeAR also heard this was happening on Tuesday from an ETSU insider.

It will be interesting to see if …

1) …as a bit of a Tre Lamb-type - Healy was “Tre Lamb” while Coach Lamb was a GA at Mercer - can he retain some of the portal losses that might have occurred if they went with a different ‘type?’ …

2) …if he catches lightning in a bottle again at ETSU the way he did, really only 1 year (know he was there 3, but 2017 ‘wrote his ticket’) at APSU, will he immediately jump for another (bad) “Big Time” job again or will he have patience and wait until a pretty good “Big Time” job comes his way?

Interesting that Healy was the choice, given the other finalists were reportedly Mike Houston and Shawn Clark. ETSU's president apparently wanted Healy.
