Wow, what a shock. I am also a fan of Knights. He will be missed, but I hope he enjoys his retirement.

Wonder if Pat Knight is going to stick to what Bobby did...
Doing 2 for 1s with programs that have coaches that his dad respected or were disciples of his -- Knight did a 2 for 1 with SHSU. He and our head coach have become pretty close over the years and he wanted to do that. It was huge for our program...and I believe he's done it for a few other programs...that's just class!

I'm glad to see the guy go out on his own terms. I thought what happened at IU was a sham. He's has his faults but c'mon.
Anyway, I think after all these years of coaching and winning 900+ games that it's time to relax and go fishing. Although, let's face it, guys like that don't know how to relax so don't be surprised in a few years....

Being from The Citadel, I love Bobby Knight's coaching methods. I'm always up for a good screaming match, a slight bump in the chin, or throwing of a chain among other things.
Good Luck to him.

The General produced college educated men, not NBA all-stars. He will be missed.

xoopsx Two years too late. He could have come to Delaware to replace the coach that was hired instead of him. xoopsx xoopsx xoopsx
I've always liked Coach Knight. xthumbsupx xbowx

I disagree with others on here and agree with Pat Forde on ESPN

"If this is it and Bob Knight has really just folded and walked in midseason, it's one more hypocritical moment in a career full of them.
Knight has always been a putative disciplinarian who lacked self-discipline. Now a man who demands loyalty has abandoned a Texas Tech team that is 12-8 (3-3 Big 12) and No. 54 in the RPI -- in other words, still harboring NCAA Tournament hopes. Along the way, the guy who has always disdained individual player glory sure didn't quit before he reached that 900-victory plateau, did he?
So now Knight takes his record 902 wins and quits. Bobby Petrino was charbroiled for leaving the Atlanta Falcons with three games left and the team at 3-10, but The General surrenders with at least 11 games to go and we're supposed to give him a pass?"
I agree with this, yes he was a great b-ball mind but made a career out of bullying 18 and 19 year olds.

One big difference. Petrino left for another job. Knight is retiring.

This is true--i didnt really agree with Forde's Bobby Pertino anology, but the rest is valid IMO

One of my all-time favorites.. a great coach.. never a sniff of a NCAA violation.. his players graduated and the PC crowd hated him...

Having met the guy, I would've sent my kid to play for him anyday. Great basketball mind, ran a super-clean program and graduated his kids, and was actually a very decent person. So he rankled the media at times (guy's like Pat Forde were never his favorites so I'm not surprised they take a shot at him as he leaves), and yelled at his players? If that's the worst you can say about him then so be it. Nothing wrong with yelling at players, IMO, in some places people call it coaching. Good luck to him, although you hope health isn't a reason why he's retiring now and so suddenly.

One of my favorite coaches. Flawed? Yeah, so am I. If you made it through his program, you became a stronger person. And from what I understand he has shown a great deal of loyalty to his ex-players. When Landon Turner from the 1981 National Championship team was paralyzed in a car accident the next year, Knight quietly arranged funds to provide for his assistance.

Bobby Knight
Watch out when the muse is upon the General.
I always thought of Bobby Knight as the basketball version of Bear Bryant. This quote is from the movie Junction Boys so I'm not sure if Bryant ever actually said it but this is something I can imagine Coach Knight saying:
"Boys, I don't care who your daddy is. I don't care about what kind of all-conference bull---- you were in high school. Y'all have been fartin' upwind too long..... we're gonna work now."
He definitely didn't coddle his players but I don't think you'll be able to find many young men that he coached who didn't better themselves as players and as people because of the influence of Coach Knight and to a man almost every one of them would admit that freely.

Even though I was born in Indiana and always rooted for the Hoosiers, I was embarassed by his antics. I respect the fact that he was a good coach and that a high percentage of his players graduated, but I don't have one ounce of respect for the way he treated people. For someone who preached discipline, he could not control his own temper and was lacking in self-discipline. Reacting in the immature manner he did and verbally and physically bullying and assaulting people should not command our respect.

It too has puzzled me about his lack of disclipline or self-control. Was probably one of the biggest "Do as I say, not as I do" leaders of young men. But, he did graduate his players and those who couldn't take it transferred out. It wasn't like any recruits or parents didn't know what they were in for when they signed on.
