The MVP award...

It's been mentioned a little in other threads, but I'd love to see a discussion of it seperate and distinct...

Manning was NOT the MVP of the Superbowl...a member of the defensive line was...

You can argue which member...but without the play of that line, I will argue the Giants would not have won the game...

Therefore, the MVP award was a sham this year not giving it to a member of the Giants defense...xrulesx

And without Mannings two spectacular drives, the Giants score nothing.

And round and round we go.....

I agree. I'd have gone with Tuck or all 4 of them.

Unfortunately there is no precedence for awarding a whole line the MVP award. If I remember correctly there has only been a split award twice (anyone help me out there?) and it was two individuals. Not four.

If you have to pick one player, I think Manning was a good choice. I would not argue with Tuck or Strahan, either. But, Eli took care of the ball (the one INT should have been caught by Smith), and lead his team to three scores, definitely MVP worthy.

Eli was the reason they won, the D was the reason they had a chance to win

Here's another hypothetical: Had the Giants not scored on their last drive, who should have been MVP? I say, even though he had no points, Mr. Welker.

If the Patriots had scored 21 points, Eli would not have had the opportunity to have a game winning drive. The defense set the table for Eli. Randy White and Harvey Martin split the MVP one year for Dallas. Tuck and Stahan would have been a good start.

I've got to disagree with you there...The Pats defense played well enough to limit the Giants to 17 points...

Without the defensive line play of the Giants, I doubt the Pats would have been held to 14 points...

The D Line was the reason they won...Eli gave them enough points to complete the win...

So I think we've come to the conclusion that football is a team sport, and the MVP is very unimportant in the grand scheme of things. xreadx

The thing is, even though the NYG defense played an amazing game, no one person on defense cannot make a difference in the game in the same way that a quarterback or runningback can on offense. That's why MVP's typically go to the so-called "skill positions".

It's hard to pick a "most" valuable player for the Giants. But Tyree's performance was a valuable as any.

I spoke these exact words today. It seems like the winning QB always gets the award. I'm not taking anything away from Manning's performance but the Giants D-Line was superb. They were quick, used excellent pass rushing techniques and made THE difference in the game. I would have liked to have seen the entire D-Line get the award but if I had to pick just one I'd go with Justin Tuck.

The biggest rip was the lip-synching of the National Anthem. Just plug an iPod into the friggin PA system and stop pretending it's live.

Up until the "great escape and catch", I would have given it to Tuck. But that play was perhaps one of the greatest Super Bowl plays ever. Had Brady or Elway or Montana led his team to score a game winning TD with 38seconds left in the 4th qtr, there would be no discussion who the MVP would be.
Anyone who takes his team down the field in the final minute of the game and throws a TD to take the lead is going to be the MVP.
If Brady had thrown a bomb to Moss in the last 22 seconds who would be your Pat's MVP? Brady. Even though Welker earned it all game long.

No problem at all with Eli. He demonstrated leadership on those last two touchdown drives for the Giants. He got the ball to the receivers.

Not taking anything away from the defense. Without the defensive pressure the Giants would not have won that game.

Yea, I don't really have a problem with Eli, either. Before it was announced I guessed that Eli or Tuck would get it. Like Andy pointed out, that play clinched it for him.

If the Patriots win, I think Welker gets it.

BTW, Smith had a great second half, but easily one of the absolute WORST halves of football in the first. I heard somebody mention how great he was, but you can ask Mrs89, I said at halftime that I would have benched him for the rest of the game.... guess I won't be interviewing for that Redskins HC vacancy (I may be the only one who's not). :p

It's also imp0rtant to realize that the Giants dynamic duo at running back only had 87 yards. So it's not like the passing game had much help.

I'd have to agree with you there. Watching the Giants offense was painful due to the lousy play calling. Run on first, run on second, pass to convert a long third down.
