Will ODU play any games this year (2008), or is 2009 the opening season?

You are probably right, but when you haven't had a team for 65+ years any football news is BIG for ODU fans.xhurrayx xhurrayx xhurrayx

ODU starts with 2008 recruiting, all recruits will redshirt the first year. They will work-out (i.e. get bigger and better), practice, scrimage, etc. Or as they have said "do everything but play on Saturdays." Then in 2009 and 2010, they will play a non-CAA schedule, though some CAA teams will be played (for instance, it has been announced that they will play W&M home and away in these years. In 2011, ODU joins the CAA as a full football member and will play a full CAA schedule. The advantage in recruiting is that all recruits get a redshirt year to develop, and then all will get early and much playing time starting in 2009, something that cannot be guaranteed in more developed programs. So, they all have a chance to have considerable playing time every year for four years !!!

From a Baltimore newspaper - recapping top recruits
Bobby Cooper (South River, quarterback)
Possessing a good arm and size (6-4, 195 pounds), the senior was named to the MdVarsity.com Dream Team after throwing for more than 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns the past two seasons on a run-oriented team. He has been contacted by several Division I schools, including Maryland.

Oh, and an "invited walk-on" is a non scholarship invitation to try out for the team, and if selected for the team, they usually do their best to give some assistance that year, and if do very well during the season, then a scholarship is most probable in the following years.

At Old Dominion, It's Being Built to Sell, With the Long-Awaited Return of Football Program Still a Season Away, Coach Is Working Hard at Luring Recruits

NORFOLK The short, white picket fence surrounding Foreman Field, a 72-year-old stadium in a corner of the Old Dominion University campus, is chained shut. But inside workers are building new end zone luxury boxes, locker rooms and training rooms.
The stadium’s artificial turf, installed as part of an early 1980s renovation, is worn. But a new state-of-the-art surface will replace it next year.
