This is so sad. Thoughts and prayers for his family. I don't remember hearing about it.
Even with all the safety gear and rules changes, it still can be a dangerous sport unfortunately. Let's all hope it doesn't happen anymore.

Apparently the death notice was false, he’s still alive but on life support.

Alabama A&M Bulldog's Medrick Burnett Jr., who the university said had died on Tuesday after on-field injuries, 'remains alive,' the university said in a fresh statement on Wednesday. Sports Information Director Brian Howard had released a statement earlier saying that the freshman linebacker died after sustaining injuries in a game earlier in the season. However, on Wednesday, Bryant retracted the initial statement calling the 'death' notice an 'unfortunate occurrence'.
"We retract the news of the passing of Medrick Burnett Jr, that was originally advised by an immediate family member on Tuesday evening," Howard said in a statement. "Our staff acted accordingly to the wishes of the family member to inform the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate occurrence."

Medrick Burnett Jr., a 20-year-old football player for Alabama A&M University, died Wednesday a month after sustaining a serious injury during a football game.
Burnett Jr., a linebacker who was injured during the Magic City Classic Oct. 26 in Birmingham, was pronounced dead at 5:43 p.m. Wednesday at UAB Hospital, a month after the Classic, Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Matt Angelo reported Friday.
According to a post written by his sister, Dominece James, on GoFundMe (https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-medrick-burnett-jr-heal-after-severe-injury?attribution_id=sl:75fea273-7714-4d76-94fb-44101ab86c62&utm_campaign=cx&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=cx_link), Burnett suffered several brain bleeds after a head-on collision during a tackle in the game, where Alabama A&M faced off against Alabama State University at Legion Field. James said that while he was in the ICU, Burnett underwent a craniotomy to reduce swelling in his brain, adding that it was “the last resort to help try to save his life.”
