View Full Version : Should the NFL give Patriots SMU-like "Death Penalty" for cheating way to 3 titles?

All the talk beforehand was that clearly the Pats didn't cheat this year, since they got caught in Week 1. Now there's talk that they videotaped the Rams final walkthrough, the Steelers (championship games) and Eagles have both claimed they felt like the Pats knew what was coming in their games...
If its all proven, what should the NFL do? Should they strip them of their ill-gotten SB's? Should they take away all of their draft picks for 4 years? Give them a smaller cap to play with? Should Belichek be banned from coaching for 10 years (this happened to a Cal hoops coach IIRC).
10's of millions of people watch the Super Bowl every year, and they've turned it into a fraud. They should be punished severely...

Getting caught, cost them another Super Bowl this year. xoopsx

Nah, just investigate the heck out of them during this off-season and let's get everything out in the clear. The NFL tried to hush hush this after Week 1 but there's more than enough smoke to believe that there's plenty of possibilities for more fire elsewhere. Congress doesn't do much in an election year anyway so we could be seeing some Congressional hearings this year.

I don't know, but apparently Bellicheat isn't nearly the genius when he doesn't have their game plan ahead of time. xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx

I don't think there should ever be at any time any talk of stripping the titles from the team. But I do like the idea of forcing Bill Belichick to resign, take a year or two off for his slap in the face of football. If he leaves on his own, it will be easier for him to come back. And I think the team should be stripped of first round draft picks for the incidents. I understand that would likely mean no 1st round picks for the likely 50+ games. That's not practical. But a 3-5 year probation with no 1st or 2nd round picks could be a fair if what we hear is indeed true.

No.
You can have the answers before the test, but you still gotta take the test.
Meaning, if they did somehow cheat, well, they still had to go out and play the game, and execute their offense and defense to a point where they would be in a position to win. I really don't believe their videotaping had all that much to do with their success on the field week after week after week.

Agreed, the biggest thing that can happen (if these rumors are true) would be that Belichick resigns. He'd end up getting a job somewhere in a year or two, but he'd lose the Patriots job.

Baseball players can take steroids, but they still have to know how to swing the bat. Does that make it okay in your book? xconfusedx

What I find funny is that people believe that the Pats were/are the only team to do this. ALL teams did this. The Pats were the only ones to get caught. xcoffeex

Rep points for the man!!! xthumbsupx
Investigate all you want...but don't limit it to the Patriots...
If what people like Parcells and others have indicated...the Patriots are just the only team that got caught...
Let's do a complete investigation into all teams...then, let's see who's being "holier-than-thou"...xcoffeex

As much as I love to torture Travis, this story is based on a single "unnamed source."
Unless something else comes out, this is a non-story, IMO.
Don't tell Travis I said this xwhistlex

He already said (in public.. out loud for everybody to hear)
"We (meaning the Cowboys) did the exact same thing.." xwhistlex

Since the who spygate back in September Belichick has resigned through 2013.
Im sure Robert Kraft knew of the complete extent of everything that happened before the contract was finalized.
I dont see him resigning or being forced out.
Also I just want to say this.... The whole thing with the St. Louis game is coming from a former employee who was fired.... perhaps this guy is just looking for some payback figuring he can say stuff eventually land a book deal and most people will believe every word he says.

everyone did it.... I read somewhere that the Dolphins had reportedly told a new coach when he was hired (can't recall who it was) that they had a way around the Coach-to-QB communications cutoff with 15 seconds left on the play clock.

I said all Boston teams -- not just the Patriots -- should be given the "death penalty" over this.

I don't think he's going anywhere either, I was just saying that there is no way the NFL takes back Super Bowls. The worst they can do is throw out Belichick, which even that is unlikely because I think this issue will die down now that the Patriots lost.

I'm glad we have someone here with all this proof that the other teams indeed did this and just didn't get caught. Feel free to share this proof with us.

Should they strip them of their ill-gotten SB's?
Short of McNabb being traded this offseason, that would be the Eagles' only hope of winning a Superbowl this decade.
