What a night! Got to golf with Roger yesterday, and tonight I was invited to a function thrown by The Staubach Company. We use The Staubach Company for all our commercial real estate needs, and have made them several hundred thousand dollars in the past few years in commissions, so we got invited to meet the "big guy". Met and spoke with Roger for about 20 minutes.....what a GREAT guy! BTW, I'm sure it comes as a shock, but he's a BIG McCain supporter! So, between the Navy, McCain and football, we had a lot in common to talk about. I also got to meet Admiral Tom Lynch, who was Roger's center in college and was captain of the '63 Navy team. Another great guy who's a huge McCain advocate. These guys are awesome!
Not to be a name dropper, but this was a big night for me. xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx xnodx

Never met Staubach, but always admired him. One of my three favorite all-time NFL QB's with John Unitas and Joe Namath.

Almost twenty years ago I attended a seminar/convention in Dallas where the keynote speaker was Roger Staubach. Not being a Cowboys fan (far from it), I was fairly ambivalent entering the session, but interested more because of his college career and out of respect to his Navy service. Well, he turned out to be an incredible public speaker and inspirational. Without a doubt, the leadership skills were quite evident and I understood why he was so successful in football. That old cliche about running through a brick wall for a guy would definitely be appropriate for Roger based on how I felt at the end of his speech!!!
Must have been a great evening AZGriz!!! xnodx xnodx xthumbsupx

Mike Ditka was on the radio here the other day, and they asked him about playing with Roger. Mike said that the greatest motivator, the greatest leader he had ever met, inside the huddle or out, on the football field or in the business world, was Roger Staubach. After spending some time talking with Roger last night, I can see why. He is one of the most humble, down-to-earth individuals you'd ever hope to meet, and his employees (1600 and counting) love him...well, at least all the ones I met. He's got tons of old teammates and Navy guys working with him and for him....just an all around good guy, and it was a hell of a way to spend an evening.

Roger gets around. My sister's husband was fortunate enough to tailgate and sit with Roger for this year's Army / Navy game (they live in Baltimore). Evidently, his boss went to the Naval Academy with Mr. Staubach. Very jealous of both of you! (Roger Staubach is one of my favorite all time players). xthumbsupx

Yep....cool thing was to meet Tom Lynch, Admiral, who was Roger's center and team captain in '63. I introduced myself as Lieutenant Commander Martin, and I thought he was going to rip my arm off shaking my hand! We talked ships, guns, Navy and McCain for about an hour! Then talked some more later in the evening when all the pussies had left and it was just Navy men (and their lovely spouses, of course). Roger, Tom, me and two other guys were the last 5 to leave. VERY cool. A night I won't soon forget! xthumbsupx xthumbsupx xthumbsupx xthumbsupx

I'll go out on a limb and make the assumption that you've never met the man but, like most things, you've made a snap judgment based on something someone ELSE told you about him, knowing you'd buy it hook, line and sinker.

Wow, that's an obscure reference for the old-timers.
But if I recall correctly, Longley started it with a sucker punch and drew some blood, and thereafter Staubach kicked his a**.
Sort of like Robin Ventura and Nolan Ryan (a layup for you Chicago guys).

Funny story about Staubach. He was being interviewed by former Miss America turned football broadcaster Phyllis George and the conversation turned to a comparison with Joe Namath. George starts asking Staubach about his life off the field. Staubach is plainly uncomfortable. George finally gets a squirming Staubach to say, "Look, I like sex just as much as Joe Namath -- except I do it with one woman."
I still remember my father laughing out loud at that one.

Here's another funny "sex" story from Roger, told to me personally Friday night:
He's standing there with me and my buddy, talking about his wife. My buddy asks "did you really meet your wife in the eighth grade?" To which Roger replies, "actually, I met her in the fourth grade. I just didn't like girls in the fourth grade. I'm just glad I started liking girls!" Then he goes on to say "When I was on my eighth grade football team, I was running down the sidelines and I saw her cheering on the sidelines. I decided right then, 'I'm gonna marry that girl!' When we would ride the bus to away games, we'd let the cheerleaders sit on our laps....I thought "HEY! This is pretty nice!"
Dude is one funny man, and VERY much in love with his wife, who's lovely, by the way.

Speaking about Staubach, I was talking to a Minnesota Vikings fan the other day, and the subject of the "Haily Mary" pass came up.
I saw that play live, and have seen it replayed about a thousand times. Although it has become commonly accepted in Minnesota that Drew Pearson committed offensive pass interference, I told him I've never seen the basis for that assertion. It looked to me like Nate Wright simply lost his balance as the players adjusted for the ball, and that Pearson simply was moving to the ball when contact was made, owing to Wright's own lack of control.
Needless to say, he disputed this and further said that Drew Pearson later admitted he pushed off. I've done some internet searching on that point, but have only come up with self-serving statements on less than authoritative websites.
So what about the gang here: clean play or offensive pass interference?
Also can anyone point me to an authoritative source for the claim that Pearson admitted his interference?

Just curious. Was that the same game in which the ref was hit with a flying bottle. I know the game was in Minnesota and I think the ref was the same guy who called a terrible pass interference call (my opinion) in one of the Dallas-Pittsburgh Superbowls. Lynn Swann and a Dallas DB got their feet tangled and the call went the Steelers way. Tom Landry was extremely upset.

Yes, right after the play, a fan hit the ref in the head with a whisky bottle thrown from the stands. WTF? He was hurt pretty badly.
The only call I ever remember Tom Landry criticizing was a call in the Super Bowl when a pass interference call was called against Benny Barnes, I think. The play led to a Steeler touchdown in a game they won by four points.
The NFL office later admitted that it was a bad call, if I remember right.
That sticks out in my mind because Tom Landry was never a guy to complain about a call, and this is the only time I ever remember him criticizing a ref.

Yep. Longley was a big-time head case and was actually worried about losing his back-up job to Danny White.

I never heard about the pass interference by Drew Pearson, until I moved to Minnesota. They are in the state of denile. xlolx
