Santa Clara Feels "Disconnected" With Athletes

Since disbanding football in 1993, the Broncos have had a difficult time connecting students with athletics, seeing traditions like homecoming “fizzle away". The school is trying new things, including moving a “Spirit Week” in the middle of basketball season.
It was the mid-1960s when Santa Clara students last came out in legions to root for the home team during the glitz and fanfare of a true homecoming game in its heyday. Over 40 years later, student organizations are trying to bring back the spirit of this tradition.
Associated Students, in conjunction with numerous other student organizations – including the Residential Learning Community Association, Activities Programming Board and Ruff Riders – will be presenting Homecoming and Bronco Spirit Week from Feb. 19 to 23, said AS President Austin Woody.

Hard to imagine Homecoming without football. What do other non-football schools do?

I've been to Wofford road basketball games at schools that held their homecoming during basketball season. It was a total waste. I sat in the stands feeling embarrassed for the home fans. They should add football just for the sole purpose of ending that kind of indignation.

I went to a Santa Clara hoops game against the USF Dons, and a fistfight broke out in the stands at the final buzzer!

Dayton, of course, has a great football team but no homecoming.... The last one held got out of hand and the school dropped it.... I suppose that it has been replaced by "Parents Weekend". Not quite the same, however....

I think dropping homecoming was a big mistake. It is my hope that we bring it back sometime in the future.

UNC-Wilmington has a winter homecoming that's a pretty big deal. We played them in hoops for their winter homecoming, and it's pretty much what you'd see at a homecoming game at most other schools, except that the football game was played on a basketball court. ;-)

Fights used to be quite common at Santa Clara/Saint Mary's football games. They both dropped football which was a crime. GWFC would have a full conference schedule and an autobid with both of them. Santa Clara was always a competitive game for UC Davis.
