Ugh I cannot stand Cowherd.

My favorite is college football/basketball announcer Ron Franklin, I could listen to him call a junior high girls water polo match.

Gus Johnson from CBS is great during March Madness also.

I know that there are people who can't stand Tony Kornheiser (he's not great in the booth, but I've always enjoyed his columns, especially back in the Redskins 'bandwagon' days :) ) and Michael Wilbon. But they have both been writers at The Washington Post for as long as I've cared to read the sports section, and I've always enjoyed the columns, even if I didn't agree with what they had to say.

But I didn't know until Wilbon's column today that he had a heart attack this past Monday. xeekx

No not WIP, not my favorite.. I like Jodie Mac from 950 in Philly. He is not a big joker but is just a wealth of knowledge and has great stories. I used to work in the same building where his radio station is situated. Had quite a few conversations with him in the elevator as I ran into him while taking one of his frequent smoke breaks.

Great article, I've always liked both Kornheiser and Wilbon but Wilbon better. He's non-objectvie, eloquent, and is one of the best at developing and expressing original thought and perspective rather than a bunch of reprocessed cliches that sportwriters love to use so much.

I was kind of shocked to hear he had been hospitalized from a heart attack but I'm glad to see he's recovered and seems like he has become a better man for it, a lot us could learn a thing or two about class from a guy like Wilbon.

Here's to a speedy recovery knucklehead, and hopefully many more Super Bowls in your future.

Wow I had no idea anything happened to Mike either, hopefully he gets healthy and we have his commentary for years to come. PTI is also nowhere near as good without Him and Tony

I don't get good reception for 950, otherwise I'd listen at 3:00. I am a fan of Jodie Mac, you are right, he has a wealth of knowledge.

Get well Mike Wilbon.

Thanks for the post. I've seen PTI a couple of times this week and they referenced Wilbon's heart procedure, but nothing more. I'll be glad to see him back.

Baseball: Harry Kalas--the Voice of the Phillies
Football: Ron Franklin--as someone else posted, I could listen to him call a game all day.
Writer: Rick Reilly, formerly of SI. I really miss his articles that were always at the end of the weekly issue. Was the first thing I read.
Local writer: Ray Didinger who covers the Eagles, IMO, is usually a pretty well-reasoned scribe.

Your missing out without Jodie. He is expecially strong with baseball, as his dad was the GM of the Mets years ago, but good overall in all areas.

I know, it was great when he was on WIP in the afternoon. He knows his stuff and he listens to the callers.

Do you remember when he was on WIP with Glen Macnow? Mac and Mac was good listening.

Don't really have any favorite, per say.

I like guys that inform me and sometimes who can entertain me, such as the two guys on PTI, Kornheiser and Wilbon.

Locally, here in the Philly area, I like Ray Didinger for his football knowledge, and Michael Barkann who is a host on Comcast SportsNet.

I tend to pay more attention to the color guys or analysts, and some of my favorites are Ron Darling, Jay Bilas, Phil Simms and Cris Collinsworth. I like the guys that know the game and don't need to go crazy and over the top like a Vitale. The Big Monday games with Bilas and Raftery are excellent. And you gotta appreciate a guy like Darling who just did a two-week workout program that the pitchers do so he could have a better understanding of the regiment of today's pitchers.

I wasnt in Philly during his WIP days, my first exposure to him was on 950. I get spotty reception of 950 in my neck of the woods as well sometime. If I cant get Jodie on the way home from work I usually just listen to NPR as the local guys here in the Lehigh Valley are terrible and they talk about the Yankees constantly.

I agree with you about Whitlock. I particularly enjoy how people who dislike him (i.e., anyone currently associated with ESPN) mock him, but seldom actually address the issues or positions he writes about. If someone can't actually debate the merits of your point, then you've probably got a good one. I didn't list him because I only read his stuff once a week.

He writes a weekly column for FoxSport.com:

He has also taken a Bill Cosby type approach and isnt afraid to call out issues in the african american community that others have stayed away from.
