Bubble season has officially begun in the FCS, and this week features many teams that are needing to win out to feel confident their name will be called come selection Sunday. There’s also 2 games that look to be de facto conference championship games (and the auto bid that goes with it), and also games featuring teams that look to be solidly in the field jockeying for playoff positioning.
What is the AGS game of the week?
#23 Western Carolina @ #24 East Tennessee State With both teams sitting at 4 losses, this could very well be an elimination game from the playoff bubble.
Robert Morris @ #28 Duquesne The only 2 teams undefeated in league play, this looks like it could be the NEC championship game. Though Central Connecticut State has to play both teams yet and they are sitting at only one conference loss, so they will have something to say about it as well.
Lehigh @ Holy Cross The Crusaders can all but clinch the Patriot League title, while the Mountain Hawks look to keep their league title hopes alive. If Lehigh can win this week they would force a 3 way tie atop the league, and would then need Holy Cross to beat Bucknell the following week (while winning out themselves of course).
#11 Rhode Island @ Delaware The Rams look to keep rolling, and a win here should catapult them into top 8 seed discussion. The Fighting Blue Hens, uneligible for the playoffs, look to play spoiler to Rhody’s conference title hopes as well as damage their playoff positioning.
#20 Central Arkansas @ #31 Eastern Kentucky The Colonels kept their playoff chances alive last week in handing Tarleton their first FCS loss, and look for another resume building win this week. The Bears, coming off their disastrous blowout loss to previously winless Utah Tech, should probably be thinking they can’t afford any more losses this year if they want to be assured of a playoff spot.
#3 South Dakota State @ #T25 North Dakota After a catastrophic road trip the Fighting Hawks playoff chances are on life support, and it doesn’t get any easier with the 2 South Dakota teams visiting Grand Forks the next 2 weeks. We all know how UND plays drastically different home vs. away, so this could still be a very tough test for the Jackrabbits.
Lamar @ #7 Incarnate Word Like many other teams, the Cardinals (Lamar’s) can ill afford another loss if they want to feel confident in making the playoff field. The Cardinals (Incarnate Word’s) are most likely looking at a top 8 seed if they can win out.
#4 UC Davis @ #9 Montana (on ESPN2) The top of the Big Sky is going to be very interesting to watch over the next few weeks, as the top 3 teams (Montana State, UC Davis, Montana) each have games against the other 2. It gets started this week with a Big Sky After Dark matchup on national TV.
