In the tradition of such FCS walkover opponents such as Virginia-Lynchburg, North American, University of Ft. Lauderdale, and Lincoln-California, a new school in rural Louisiana has been deemed as a countable opponent by the NAIA: John Melvin College.

If you've never heard of the John Melvin Millers, you're not alone. The school was founded in 2021 and has an enrollment of 75, nearly all athletes. It leases one building, but no dorms, and classes are online.

Its 2024 football season was cancelled midway due to a lack of athletes, and, that the NAIA would not recognize them as an opponent. Now that they are, they will likely try to pick up some guarantee games soon.

Before the cancellation, John Melvin was the likely first win of the season for North American, another "countable" school which lost this season to Stephen F. Austin 77-0. Through eight games against Division III and NAIA schools, it has been outscored 428-49.

Seems better suited to be the next rival of Jerry Falwell University in 20 years...

If the choice is playing college football vs driving a truck or working the rice fields (the origin of the "Millers" name) of course they'd play football.

Agreed, but aren't these non-accredited "football factories" entirely driven by tuition paying "students" -- isn't that the scam?

This situation is similar to AAU hoop or baseball teams - pay to play. Sure, they are hoping to transfer for an actual college scholarship - but I bet most of these guys are likely driving a truck or working some job during the day then playing football.

I would like to see Baylor and Liberty play on a regular basis assuming nothing develops with John Melvin. xsmiley_wix
