Games that figure to be de facto conference championships, teams looking to reach win totals they haven’t seen in quite some time, multiple teams that can’t afford another loss and who’ve playoff games have already begun, and teams trying to set themselves up for a high playoff seed.
What is the AGS game of the week?
#27 North Carolina Central @ South Carolina State (on ESPN2) This nationally televised game looks like the de facto MEAC championship game.
Lehigh @ Georgetown The winner of this game can set themselves up to play Holy Cross later in the year in a potential Patriot League championship game. The Mountain Hawks can reach 5 wins for the first time since 2017, & the Hoyas can reach 6 wins for the first time since 2011 (and only the 2nd time since 1999).
Monmouth @ #13 Rhode Island Undefeated so far against FCS competition, the Rams are in position to play for a top 8 seed down the stretch. With 4 losses already, the Hawks playoff run begins this week.
#28 Harvard @ #24 Dartmouth The only 2 ranked Ivy teams in the AGS poll battle to find out what is the best color in the league. The Big Green can take control of the league title race, while the Crimson can get back in the title race after stumbling early in the year against Brown.
#T36 Towson @ #16 Richmond The playoffs began last week for the Tigers (where they beat Monmouth to put them in the same position). The Spiders look to stay undefeated in conference play, and if they win here they should be looking at being 7-0 in the CAA heading into their season finale against William & Mary.
#14 Chattanooga @ #31 Western Carolina Much like the CAA games, one team (Chattanooga) is looking to position themselves for the best playoff seed possible, while the other team (Western Carolina) has to feel like the playoffs start for them this week.
#21 East Tennessee State @ #11 Mercer Depending on the outcome of the Chat/WCU game, the winner of this game could take control of the conference title race. Mercer rebounded nicely last week following their first loss, and they have another tough test this weekend with the surprise team in the SoCon coming to town. A win here would all but clinch the SoCon championship for the Bears. The Buccaneers likely need to at least split their next 2 games (they host WCU next week) to feel comfortable about controlling their playoff chances going into the final 2 games of the season (in which they will be heavily favored in both).
#32 Southern Utah @ #20 Abilene Christian The Thunderbirds are still clinging to playoff hopes, while the Wildcats look to bank every win they can get in a balanced and competitive UAC.
#19 UT Martin @ #26 Tennessee State The Tigers have somewhat quietly been winning games and building a nice record, a win here over a ranked Skyhawk team everyone has assumed will be in the playoffs would be a huge statement. The Skyhawks would love to win out to feel real comfortable about their playoff chances come selection Sunday.
