View Full Version : 2024 Week 9 Playoff Prognostication
Professor Chaos
October 27th, 2024, 07:47 PM
Believe it or not we're only 4 weeks away from Selection Sunday so it's time to get serious about playoff prognosticating! As in previous years I broke it down by conference listing the teams in order from where I think (using Massey as a guide) each team sits in terms of easiest path to the playoffs to toughest path within their conference. You can see all of Massey's updated numbers at https://masseyratings.com/cf2024/fcs/ratings and clicking on each team there gives the details I'm using below. The numbers in brackets behind each team is Massey's expected remaining wins and losses and the percentage in parenthesis behind each remaining game is Massey's percentage that each team wins that respective game. Using Massey percentages to project the remaining games I put together what I think would be the field at the bottom of this post if it all played out like it's supposed to (which we all know it won't).
Big Sky
Similar to last year the Big Sky isn't all that complicated. Montana St is practically a lock but in the incredibly unlikely event that they lose their last 4 they'd probably knock themselves out. I do wonder a bit about UC Davis - they should get their 8th win next week which you'd think would lock them in but Massey has them as underdogs in their final 3 (which includes both Montana schools) and if they lose 3 in a row to finish 8-4 things might get sketchy for them. Montana and Idaho each need to win 2 more to get locked in which is pretty doable with their remaining schedules. NAU is another interesting one - if they can beat Weber St next week their final 3 are very winnable and 8-4 probably gets them in although they do have a sub-D1 win in there which might hurt them. I'm guessing the Big Sky gets 4 bids and probably 3 are seeded (seeds go to the top 16 this year).

CAA
What a mess! There are a whopping 10 CAA teams still in contention and I don't if any of them, even Rhode Island at 7-1, can be feeling super good. Some of these teams Massey believes in like Richmond, Villanova, and William & Mary and some of them he doesn't like Stony Brook, Hampton, ad Rhode Island to a certain degree. Of the teams that must win only Maine seems to be in truly dire straits but it seems unlikely any of those teams can get to Selection Sunday at 8-4. Just based on sheer numbers of contenders it seems like the CAA gets at least 4 teams and could get more. What will be interesting to see is where they end up seeded. The top 16 teams get playoffs seeds this year so some of them will certainly be seeded but can any make the top 8 and get that coveted playoff bye? We'll see.

MVFC
Like the Big Sky the MVFC is pretty simple and like Montana St NDSU should be pretty much a lock but not officially since an unlikely losing streak to end the season might knock them out. SDSU is also trending towards a high seed as their schedule softens up considerably after a brutally tough last 2 weeks. USD only has 11 games on the schedule this year with their Portland St game cancelled and one of those is a D2 game so I think they need to win out to get a top 8 seed and probably need to win 2 of their last 3 to lock in. UND did themselves no favors losing at Youngstown as they still have to play both South Dakota schools and @Illinois St which means winning 3 of their last 4, which they'll need to in order to lock themselves in, might be a tall order. Illinois St also needs to win 3 of 4 to get in which is doable but if they're going into the season finale against UND at 7-4 they'll put themselves in a tough spot so winning the next 3 is probably their most realistic path. The MVFC could see as few as 3 or as many as 5 playoff bids so splitting the difference at 4 is probably the most likely but they could end up with 2 of the top 3 seeds at this rate.

SOCON
Mercer rebounded nicely yesterday and is sitting pretty in the driver's seat for the SOCON auto and possibly a top 8 seed along with the playoff bye that comes with it. Chattanooga and WCU play a big one this week - a WCU loss knocks them out and a Chattanooga loss would give them no margin for error in their final 3 although they're favored in all of them. ETSU has a couple tough ones coming up at Mercer and vs WCU but if they can split those they can probably still make it in at 8-4 if they win their last 2 despite a sub-D1 win. Either WCU or Samford winning out is unlikely so there's probably only 2-3 bids out of the SOCON this year but seeds (there are 16 this year) are still very much up in the air although the seem likely to get at least one and maybe 2.

UAC
The UAC will be very interesting to watch over the season's final 4 weeks with many of the teams in the below list playing each other. They could play themselves down to a one bid league although it seems highly likely there's at least one at-large out of the UAC with 2 at-larges still possible. Massey doesn't have much faith in ACU and neither team in the "must win out" group seems likely to stick around so Tarleton and UCA are the best bets to be playing playoff games from the UAC and both could find their way into pretty high seeds if they win out.

OVC/Big South
It looks like SEMO is speeding towards an undefeated against the FCS 11-1 regular season (although after squeaking by Gardner-Webb yesterday you can never be too sure) which should get them into the top 8 and a first round playoff bye. UTM is a big favorite to win out which should get them in comfortably so really the only glaring question here is can Tennessee St sneak in? They still have to play both SEMO and UTM but they could drop both and still finish 8-4 although Massey doesn't like their chances at Gardner-Webb either. I think at 8-4 they're probably on the outside looking in with an all FCS schedule (in other words no FBS losses) but it's not crazy to think that the OVC could get three teams in if things break their way on the bubble.

Incarnate Word is in the driver's seat here and would be a top 8 national seed if they win out - after that there's a bunch of question marks in the SLC. SFA has 3 coin flip games, according to Massey, in their last 4 and can only afford to drop one of them if that. Massey has no confidence that Lamar can make it to Selection Sunday with less than 5 losses. Nicholls has a reasonable chance to run the table which they'll need to in order to get in. I included SLU, even though they already have 5 losses, since their schedule has been brutal (2 FBS losses and FCS losses to SDSU, Tarleton, and UIW) - unless they can get the auto I don't think they have much of a shot at 7-5 since they wouldn't have much for notable wins but they'd have one of the strongest 7-5 resumes out there. I'm guessing one at-large out of the SLC at most and quite possibly none if UIW runs the table.

Nicholls 4-4 (2-1) [2.53/1.47] - SFA (47%), @HCU (81%), @Lamar (67%), SLU (58%)
SE Louisiana 4-5 (3-1) [2.05/0.95] - @Lamar (65%), NWSU (97%), @Nicholls (42%)
Others
Not much here to talk about yet - the other three autobid leagues that haven't been covered yet (NEC, Patriot, and Pioneer) seem pretty likely to just be one-bid leagues this year. NC Central or Jackson St might be notable if either miss out on the Celebration Bowl/SWAC title game but they'd each have at least 3 losses at that point so it seems like a long shot.
The Field
So there's 14 at-large available - this is where I see them landing if things go to plan based on Massey odds over the final 4 weeks (which of course they won't) - the lists include the autos so there's one additional team for each conference on top of the at-larges:
Big Sky: 3 - Montana St (12-0), Montana (9-3), Idaho (9-3), UC Davis (8-4)
CAA: 3 - Richmond (10-2), Villanova (10-2), Rhode Island (9-3), William & Mary (8-4)
MVFC: 4 - NDSU (11-1), SDSU (10-2), USD (8-3), Illinois St (8-4), UND (7-5)
SOCON: 2 - Mercer (10-2), Chattanooga (9-3), ETSU (8-4)
UAC: 1 - UCA (10-2), Tarleton (10-2)
OVC/Big South: 1 - SEMO (11-1), UTM (9-3)
SLC: 0 - UIW (10-2)
The other 3 autos:
Patriot: Holy Cross (7-5)
NEC: Duquesne (9-2)
Pioneer: Drake (9-1)
The seeds (there's 16 now... woo-hoo!)
1. NDSU (11-1)
2. Montana St (12-0)
3. SDSU (10-2)
4. SEMO (11-1)
5. Mercer (10-2)
6. UIW (10-2)
7. UCA (10-2)
8. Tarleton (10-2)
9. Richmond (10-2)
10. Villanova (10-2)
11. Chattanooga (9-3)
12. Idaho (9-3)
13. USD (8-3)
14. Montana (9-3)
15. UTM (9-3)
16. Rhode Island (9-3)
Last 4 in: ETSU (8-4), UC Davis (8-4), UND (7-5), William & Mary (8-4)
First 4 out: SFA (8-4), ACU (7-5), NAU (7-5), New Hampshire (7-5)
Others on the outside looking in amongst the teams I've listed above: Nicholls (7-5), Stony Brook (7-5), Towson (7-5), TSU (7-5), Samford (6-5), Monmouth (6-6), SLU(6-6), SUU (6-6), EKU (5-7), Hampton (5-7), Lamar (5-7), Maine (5-7), WCU (5-7)
The bubble actually came out pretty soft when I used Massey to project all the games in the last 4 weeks as all teams in the contending conferences who are projected to get to 8 wins get in except for SFA who you could make an argument for over UND or W&M. The seeds are pretty much a total stab in the dark right now since there's a lot of hair splitting that would need to go into pretty much everything outside of the top 4 (if it plays out like this - which it won't).
What do you think? Feel free to throw out your projection - it's kind of a fun exercise IMO.

Sac State is favored over Davis. Oh come on Biden. If Sac State gets in over Davis then we know it is rigged. Even if Davis goes 11-0 they will still be ranked no higher than #4 no matter what happens. This is all based on how these polls work.Sac State is unranked, but favored to beat Davis, like they did last year? Oh wait that didn't happen.

Stony Brook sure seems to have a better shot than Massey is projecting. For some reason Massey has Albany as the dream-killer in the CAA down the stretch as they're favored against both New Hampshire and Stony Brook (SBU on the road even) despite having a lower rating than either of those teams. I don't get it but that's what I'm using to project the winners so, under those conditions, SBU loses their last 3 and finishes 7-5 which would put them out. I think they can get in at 8-4 with good wins over Towson and William & Mary (and also possibly over UNH and/or Monmouth) provided those teams don't drop off the map down the stretch.

That doesn't make much sense either - Massey has UC-Davis at #5 in the FCS and Sac St at #25 so, even at Sac St, I don't really understand how the Hornets are favored. Unlike previous seasons UC Davis doesn't have a bad loss (or losses) yet. I think they could play themselves up to a top 2 seed still if they win out and even 9-3 probably gets them seeded somewhere between #9 and #16 with that good win over Idaho.

I am really hoping that the UAC can get 3 in this year. That would be a huge win for the conference. ACU has a lot of work to do if they are to make it, even with the H2H over UCA. I do think ACU is actually playing better now than we have been, so will wait to see how accurate Massey is. The ACU/Tarleton game will be a really big event in Stephenville...

Mercer was unimpressive because they fell behind early to a legit top-10 or better FCS offense? WCU did basically the same thing against Montana earlier this season and that game ended very similar. I know WCU is now 4-4 on the season and we have lots of special teams and defensive issues, but what Mercer did through the middle part of the game was impressive. And the goal is to win games, and they beat a team that has been in the top-25 and will continue to get votes this week by 10 points. It also showed that Mercer can move the ball and be a little more dynamic on offense. I think their back-up QB should now be their #1 QB.

Correct. Delaware isn't eligible for the playoffs or the CAA title - Missouri St isn't eligible for the playoffs but may be eligible for the MVFC title (the conference kicked the can down the road and said they would make that determination if Missouri St was in contention for the MVFC title by the end of the season) but they still can't get the MVFC autobid.

Maybe, but WCU's offense is quite good (they put 35 up on Montana) and is better now than it was earlier in the year, and Mercer was on it's second string QB, and isn't normally the type of team that is built for shootouts so I thought they did pretty well.

"IF" URI loses to Monmouth and Delaware which is possible- and beats Albany and Bryant they cant not get in with 9 wins, but it is entirely possible that they will have zero wins against a team with a winning record or maybe 1 at most 2. Think about that for a minute. If Holy Cross does not win the PL it could be the weakest resume ever for a CAA at large (as I said- if that transpires)

Check out William & Mary's resume if they win their next 3 and lose their season finale to Richmond... they're in the same boat. Hampton does have a winning record right now, which both URI and W&M have wins over, but they may not by Selection Sunday. The imbalanced CAA conference schedules make things really tough to sort out in that league. I think W&M is very vulnerable to being left out at 8-4 and I have URI getting the last seed at 9-3 but you could be right and they may end up unseeded (meaning they'll be playing on the road in the first round) even at 9-3.

Let me ask this now that my dreams are almost totally shattered- Monmouth is 4-4, but lets say we beat URI this week then UNH on road and split with Nova and SB but the loss to whoever is close-- That is 7-5 which I just cannot see making it from The CAA- BUT in this hypothetical it would include 2 ranked wins, an FBS win, No blowout losses, a close loss to delaware and like it or not the 1 score loss to Lafayette was when they were ranked- A blowout win at Maine, blowout wins of lesser Fordham and Bryant (comparatively better wins than most) and then the EWU loss.
Wins- URI (ranked) UNH (road) Nova or Stony Brook (ranked) FIU (FBS), Maine, Fordham, Bryant- all blowout wins
Losses- EWU (week 1) Lafayette by 5 when ranked, Delaware by 7, Towson by 12 and Nova/Stony brook (assuming close)
My gut tells me not a chance but I also feel under this scenario that is a much better resume than URI could have assuming the lose to Delaware and maybe even better than W&M

It's possible. There's always a Valley team at 7-4 who gets in each year. 12 team season throws that off a bit this year. If the bubble is really soft, we will definitely see a 7-5 team get an at-large bid. There's only so many teams with legitimate playoff resumes for the last two in. Will be a team like North Dakota, Illinois St, Northern Arizona or someone from the CAA, IMO.

What if ACU loses to SFA but beats Tarleton, or, loses to both SFA and SUU or AP and beats Tarleton? ACU would still have the H2H over BOTH UCA & Tarleton in the UAC power rankings.

Agreed, there's a chance Monmouth gets in at 7-5. The selection committee loves FBS wins and Monmouth has one. Who knows whether the bubble will tighten by Selection Sunday but it's looks to be pretty soft right now so there might be more than just MVFC teams that have a shot with 5 losses (no team outside of the MVFC has ever gotten a playoff at-large with more than 4 losses I believe).

Maybe, but WCU's offense is quite good (they put 35 up on Montana) and is better now than it was earlier in the year, and Mercer was on it's second string QB, and isn't normally the type of team that is built for shootouts so I thought they did pretty well.
Not saying that WCU's offense isn't good, but putting up 35 on Montana isn't necessarily the flex you might think. EWU rang up its highest score of 2024 against the Griz (49) and Weber ran up its highest score the next week, 55 (albeit in OT) and Weebs promptly followed that up by losing at home to Northern Colorado.

Crusader what happens in the PL if 3 teams are tied with 1 league loss and are all 1-1 versus each other in terms of auto bid?
From the PL website:
Football Tiebreaker Information
a. If a tie exists, the higher seed will go to the team that won the most head-to-head League contest(s) played against the other team(s) involved in the tie.
b. If a tie still exists, a comparison of League records will be made between the tied institutions starting at the highest seed and continuing through the lowest seed, if necessary.
c. If a tie still exists, a comparison of records against common out-of-league opponents will be made.
d. If a tie still exists, a committee consisting of the athletics directors of each of the institutions not involved in the tie will make a final decision. The committee should consider various factors including, but not limited to, the following examples. Note: the examples are listed in no particular order:
1. strength of schedule
2. overall record
3. computer rankings
4. performance during second half of season The committee will meet immediately following the conclusion of the final game of the season’s final weekend. A majority vote of the members of the committee will be needed to determine the champion.
For what it's worth, a two-loss team has never won the PL. I don't see that changing this year.

This changes though with a 12 game season vs. 11. 7-5 is kind of the new 7-4 for this year.

We've had 12 game seasons before since the 24 team field was implemented (2019, 2014, and 2013) and still have not seen any team outside of the MVFC get an at-large with 5 losses. That extra game also gets a lot of at-large contenders an extra D1 win.

Massey is way off on Stony Brook. They are playing well and are strong in all three phases. I'm sure Villanova is happy they got them early. Won't be surprised if they win out. Cosh has got to be coach of the year.
Not really when you consider that their first 4 FCS games were on the weak side with two very weak (those 4 have a 5-24 Div I record overall). And they only won two of those games by one score. They have gone 2-1 against good competition since. If they keep winning they will move up.

Yeah, 7-4 is very bubblicious, as UC Davis found out last year, getting left out at 7-4 with a 3 game winning streak, including a win on the last weekend of the regular season over Sac St. who also ended 7-4.... and got a playoff berth. 7-4 is a .636 winning percentage and is no guarantee. It takes a special circumstance to get in with an even worse 7-5 record (.583 win %).

Yeah … lucchesicourt must not live in a “battleground state.”
Those of us that do have endured about 100 million more partisan, lying campaign ads than any human should have to bear. We sure didn’t need 1 more.

Yes, Massey is way off. Has Stony Brook as a 3 point dog at home against Albany on Nov. 9. With last year's record still weighing on them in Massey makes his rating of them completely obsolete.

In Arizona, it will return to Lawyer and Selling homes in 72 hours commercials.

Just curious. How often has UC Davis made the field? And if - how far did they make it?
No idea. They last made the playoffs in 2021 and lost on the road in the 1st round to eventual semi-finalist SDSU. Playoff history should have nothing to do with whether a team makes the field in the current year, though. My point about them being left out wasn't about whether or not they deserved to be in; it was to show that even a 7-4 record from a so-called "power conference" isn't a guarantee for a playoff berth, so a 7-5 record is only going to get in on the rarest of occasions.

UC Davis went D1 in 2004, which happened to be when SDSU, NDSU, and Northern Colorado made the jump from DII as well. They have made the playoffs only twice - in 2018 earned the 6 seed, defeating Northern Iowa in round 2 before falling to 3-seed and eventual runner-up Eastern Washington in the quarter finals. They also made it in 2021 but were promptly guided out of the playoffs by SDSU in the 1st round.
Wikipedia has a nice table of playoff appearances by school (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I_Football_Championship#Appearances_ by_team) summarized about halfway down the page. Give it a look! I think it's pretty interesting.

Let's face it. Some teams have off days. UC Davis was unimpressive against Portland State too. That happens. But, they both won those games. So, unimpressive does not mean anything about their other games. Everyone was talking about their defense, and this game did show some holes.
Bit, they came back to win.
