View Full Version : AGS Top 25 - How They Fared - Week 7, Fall 2024 - Crowdsource Edition
Preferred Walk-On
October 10th, 2024, 10:35 AM
You are probably wondering, "Why is there a How They Fared thread started for Week 7 on the Thursday before Week 7?"...or to paraphrase, "WTF?".
Due to some circumstances this weekend, I will not be able to put together the How They Fared sheet for Week 7 in a timely fashion.
Therefore, I am asking for assistance in completing the HTF sheet by making the sheet available to the masses for editing certain areas of it (shaded in light/dark purple). Anybody will have the ability to edit these areas of the sheet as games are completed, so I am asking that if you are willing to assist that you please do the following in completing the HTF sheet:
1. Select W or L in the “Result (W/L)” column (F).
2. For the “Score” column (G):
a. Use Ctrl-K (or if on a Mac, Cmd-K) to edit the text/hyperlink.
- In the top box, type in the score in the format of XX-XX (two digits, dash w/o spaces, two digits).
- NOTE: Do not edit the bottom box, which contains a hyperlink to that game’s box score.
b. Click “Apply” or simply hit the Enter/Return button.
3. Then go through the rest of the light/dark purple area and type in the appropriate value for that column. Pay particular attention to the dark purple shaded areas, as these indicate a conference game and/or a game vs. an AGS Top 25 team.
4. Once the above have been completed, type an “x” (lowercase, no quotes) into the cell in the “Updated” column (Y) to indicate that that game/team information has been completely updated (light purple shading will go away).
That is it. This is an experiment, but the alternative is that there will not be a sheet (at least from me) this week, so what the heck…let’s try it. AGS is a great FCS community with great members participating, so I suspect that this will go off without too much trouble.
The sheet is currently "View Only", but I will make the sheet editable on Saturday morning before that day’s games start (I'll take care of the Friday evening game on this sheet). Thank you in advance for your participation and enjoy your weekend.
The Week 7 HTF sheet is available by CLICKING HERE (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jA4uiYVlrmplWcJEJfWzAG-l1igGmbjqkZRyo7E_xKU/edit?usp=sharing) (and will be editable late Saturday morning).

Ha! I suppose you could. So what would win out, manifesting the results or karma?

If done with a pure heart, the Manifestation Mules beat the Karma Koalas by 3 scores.

Thanks. If everybody chips in a few games, this shouldn't take way too long to complete. Heck, it will probably be finished earlier than I normally post it (with the exception of a couple of Big Sky games).

My two thoughts:
1) You're probably ranking Central Arkansas too high
2) You're probably ranking UT-Martin too low

Rough week for the Big Sky. 7 Big Sky teams are ranked and 3 now have losing records. Time for a Big Sky purge.

I agree. As long as UCA wants to keep using D2 coaches it won't matter if they play good all year, they will bow out in the playoffs earlier than they should.
One more pass to the sideline and I'm out. It doesn't work. Seriously. Move the ball UP the field. Ugh.

Please note that Missouri is 4-2, not 3-2 and should get a look in the rankings, I had been excluding them because I didnt think they were eligible for the poll but I will probably rank them in the teens now, one of these losses was an FBS loss

I might put Missouri State ahead of Montana in my poll just to piss people off. xlolx

Ladies and Gentlemen, the sheet looks awesome!!! Thank you for your assistance in making that happen, and it is a testament to the dedication and knowledge AGS members have regarding FCS football (and I am sure many other things as well). I just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate it.
Also, I went in and fixed the Missouri State W-L and Streak to reflect 4-2 and W4, respectively. The sheet has now returned to being viewable only, but once again, thank you!

Let's see...
Mercer beat Chattanooga (by 7 pts) and Chattanooga beat Portland State (by 15 pts). By using the transitive property, Mercer should be ranked above UC Davis since they barely beat PSU.
Makes sense. I'll put Mercer above UC Davis.
But I'm not sure that will put Mercer at #5, since I'll have to move Northern Colorado above Mercer.
Northern Colorado beat Weber (by 4 pts) and Weber beat PSU (by 27 pts). Northern Colorado has a bigger margin of transitive victory over PSU than Mercer does.
I never thought FUBeAR would be convincing me to rank Northern Colorado above Mercer.

So, hypothetical (homer) question: Let’s say it’s two weeks from now, Wofford is sitting at 4-4. Western has beaten Samford and upset Mercer. Do you rank Wofford?
The twist is that in this scenario (it doesn’t matter if Wofford loses/beats either of UTC/ETSU, so long as they split) is that there’s a non-zero probability that Wofford will have played 6 ranked opponents out of 8 possible opponents (VMI and GW being the outliers). That’s a crazy hard schedule!

Not sure - that is a hard call at 4-4. You beat a ranked Richmond, then not very good teams in VMI (0-6) and GWU (1-5). I'd say it kind of depends on how you play against these next 2 ranked teams. If you play a tough game in both and win one, it proves you are a pretty good football team against tough competition. If you get blown out by one and win some kind of fluky game with a bunch of turnovers or special team's scores it would just feel different.
I will say in your hypothetical if WCU wins their next 2 (Furman - we don't play Samford until the end) with an upset of Mercer I would move them way up at 5-3 and 4-0 in the SOCON :)

That would totally be on point, considering Idaho was ranked ahead of UC Davis this week; let’s all ignore direct matchups while highly emphasizing common opponents, especially when home/away were swapped, 45-30 is “trashed”, a 7 point win against a 1-3 team is “shut down” and really really important, but a 42 point lead at half against a 2-3 team (and rivalry game) is just a meaningless win against a “patsy”. Solid rationale.
Surely you must be auditioning for the Playoff selection committee…

Like, there's no shaking the fact that the Campbell loss for Western was gruesome and could cost them, but there's lots of precedent for teams losing stupidly early in the season out of conference, but turning things around. 2019 Austin Pray is a great example of this.
People are starting to write off Wofford, partially because they've partially written off Western, but at the moment Wofford lost only to ranked teams, two of which they could have been wins with some better luck on the last possession.
I wouldn't be surprised if most of the socon peddled around between 5-7 to 7-5 and we only get 1-2 bids, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Western is better than people think at this point

Agree ROT. The SOCON notoriously has a bunch of tight games, and when you have a bunch of 6 or 7 win teams there is a misperception about how good the league is. Wofford is a tough out for anybody. Heck - Citadel is a tough out. VMI is really bad this year and Furman is having a tough go with losing so many players (graduation and now injury). But I won't be surprised at a bunch of 4-4 or 5-3 teams in leage play. No doubt having an early-season no-show really hurts all teams (not just Western). We usually lose one at the end to keep us out of the playoffs instead xlolx
